‘Stop it': Cruisers slammed for doing this

News.com.au24-04-2025
Reserving a pool deck chair on a cruise is the equivlient of passengers who recline their seat on a flight – both are controversial topics.
If you're a cruiser, you understand cruise etiquette is a big thing, whether it's unwritten rules like not cutting in lines to restaurants, or those clearly spelled out in cruise liners' guest conduct policies – like hogging pool deck chairs.
It happens to be one of the worst cruise etiquette offences that continues to happen without fail on most ships.
Cruiser and US travel content creator Jessica, known as 'Jesstravel7' on TikTok, shared a clip of several rows of pool chairs reserved with towels on them, lashing at the act.
'This is what you call entitlement on a cruise ship; saving all these pool chairs,' she said.
Jessica, who was travelling on Royal Caribbean's Utopia of the Seas, begged fellow cruisers not to save pool chairs if you're not at the pool.
'Do not do this. If you are not here, do not save the seats, people are looking for seats.
'This is called entitlement.'
When some viewers questioned that perhaps the guests went to grab a drink, Jessica explained that wasn't the case.
'These people went on an excursion and didn't come back five hours later expecting their chairs to be there,' she said.
Others argued it was 'planning ahead'.
'That's not entitlement. You can plan ahead too!' one person commented.
'Entitlement would be showing up late and thinking you deserve a seat that is first come first serve...' a second wrote, while a third demanded, 'No, it's not'.
'It is called, I woke up the crack of dawn and saved seats. It is called. I AM NOT NEW TO THIS.'
However, many sided with Jessica, saying guests who want to use the chairs should just remove the towels.
'I hate that ppl wake up at, 6am doing this (sic),' one cruiser demanded.
'I'll just remove their towels and use whatever seat I want. If you're not at the pool, you don't get to save a seat,' said another.
Royal Caribbean has a strict policy that explains pool deck chairs are only available on a first come, first served basis and cannot be reserved.
'We want to ensure that all guests have a great time at the pool. If a pool chair is left unattended for more than 30 minutes with no signs of any guests returning, our crew will remove any belongings and place them in the lost and found,' it explains on its site.
Norwegian Cruise Line, Carnival and other lines also prohibit passengers from reserving pool chairs.
But some guests have argued staff need to be more attentive, with Jessica claiming it took three hours for employees to remove the towels.
The controversial topic also blew up on Reddit in a fan community group for the cruise liner a week ago, after someone shared a photo with towels on a bunch of chairs at 8.30am on Utopia.
'They really need to deploy staff at the pools early in the morning, a few on each side of the pools who can just tell people as soon as they put stuff down and start to walk away that they can't do that,' one person wrote.
'It would go a long way to start to curb the behaviour. People will ignore signs, they would be way less inclined to ignore a person.'
One person who sailed on Norwegian Cruise Line shared a more positive experience on the dilemma.
'On Escape last week they were marking unoccupied chairs and pulling towels and personal effects. Chairs were all full at 9am but around 10 onwards they were starting to clear off chairs,' the cruiser wrote in the NCL community on Reddit.
'I honestly didn't think they had the commitment to do it, glad they are trying to enforce the rules.'

Reason why AFL WAG Paris Tier lost her sales job

The girlfriend of a professional athlete has revealed how she felt like she had no other choice but to leave her job due to her rising social media profile. Paris Tier, who is dating Greater Western Sydney Giants player Conor Stone, divulged on her WAG — Women and Goals podcast that her social media profile led to her ultimately leaving behind a job. Ms Tier was working in sales merchandising, and part of her role led to her being contracted out at another businesses. At the time, she didn't have a lot of followers but her posts about what her life was like dating a professional athlete started to boost her profile. 'I started posting on TikTok a month into working this job, and I only had 2000 followers but my videos were averaging 30,000 views,' she told Ms Tier said she wasn't posting about her job, but about her relationship with Stone. She said it started off with mean comments, but things escalated when she posted a clip about an NRL player. After backlash, she deleted the video. MORE: Can I be fired for that? 'I got a call from a colleague and she said, '[Our boss] has called me saying you can't work tomorrow because somebody has complained about your TikTok',' Ms Tier said. The AFL WAG was told the complaint was made not to her direct company, but the one that she was contracted to as part of her role. She asked the company's media and human resources if there were any issues with her social media, but neither department had any issues with the content. At the time, Ms Tier had annual leave planned due to a medical procedure so she went on two weeks worth of leave. 'I took the two weeks off because I needed this to calm down before I go back to work, because obviously not everyone loves social media, and if your boss read something that you did online they have to believe it in a way,' she said. 'I was a little bit disappointed because when I messaged [my boss] about it, she said it was nothing. She essentially lied to me.' During her time off, Ms Tier consulted an employment lawyer, received a probation update about why she 'wasn't the right fit for the role' and ultimately decided to resign from the job. She was also sent a letter of termination. To this day, she has no idea where the complaint originated from or if it was even real. MORE: 8 things you didn't know you could be fired for 'When this happened at work, I was in the state of mind of, 'Have I lost every opportunity to get a good job? Have I lost every opportunity to do a thing I love',' she recalled. 'And no, I haven't.' Ms Tier revealed she works in a completely new industry now, and really loves it, finding the workplace incredibly supportive. She said that contracts needed to highlight what issues they may have in regards to employee's social media presence, particularly as she never talked about the company online — barring the fact that it was on her LinkedIn profile. She said she hasn't added her latest workplace to her profile as she is scared it could happen again. Ms Tier added that there is a belief that many people in her position are unemployed. 'I don't think people realise, they see someone and think, 'Oh my god she's a stay-at-home mum, bet she doesn't have half a brain cell',' she said. 'That woman is 90 per cent of the time on maternity leave, or young enough to still be figuring out their life.' She said baseless assumptions about WAGs are 'not fair' and simply incorrect. 'People have assumptions because we don't post our work, but how can people post their work when individuals do something like this,' she said. 'It's not fair.'
