Is eThekwini Municipality's R3. 6 million fan park expenditure justified?
The eThekwini Municipality splurged big on the Nedbank Cup Final on May 10 with two free fan parks which cost R3,6 million.
Albert Park and the Durban beachfront were chosen as sites, and the municipality said these were chosen due to their proximity to the Moses Mabhida Stadium where the sold-out football match took place.
According to the municipality, the procurement process for the company that provided the service involved the Section 36 process.
Section 36 deviates from regular procurement techniques by allowing the city to acquire goods or services in an emergency or when competitive procurement rules are unrealistic or impossible to follow. The approach allows it to pick a company without pursuing more bidders.

Kaizer Chiefs' defining 2025/26 season: Will they rebuild or regress?
The 2025/26 season has officially kicked off, with the MTN8 taking centre stage this weekend. The top eight teams from last season are looking to begin their campaigns on a high note, with early silverware up for grabs. However, for the second season running, one of South African football's biggest names — Kaizer Chiefs — will once again watch from the sidelines after narrowly missing out on a top-eight finish, ending the last campaign in ninth position. Chiefs, however, ended last season on a positive note, lifting the Nedbank Cup. That triumph not only secured them a return to continental football via the CAF Confederation Cup, but also reignited belief within the club heading into this campaign. Expectations are high for the new season — at the very least, a top-eight finish is non-negotiable. The squad rebuild under new coach Nasreddine Nabi now moves into a critical phase, where visible improvement and consistency must replace last season's instability. Much of their previous struggles were self-inflicted. Defensive lapses, an inability to hold onto leads, and poor execution in key moments proved costly. Injuries, particularly at the back, also disrupted their campaign. But with the injection of new talent and a fresh sense of direction, there is renewed hope that this season could mark a turning point.

'We'll challenge everything,': Nabi on Chiefs title chances
Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi says his side will compete for everything this coming season. Amakhosi are involved in the CAF Confederations Cup, Betway Premiership, Carling Knockout and the Nedbank Cup. Their season kicks off against Stellenbosch in Cape Town next weekend. 'How we're approaching the season with the league, the Nedbank Cup and the CAF Confederations Cup is to take game by game and do everything we can in every game to win that game,' Nabi told the media. 'Maybe it's not gonna be possible to win all the games, maybe it's gonna be possible but we gonna challenge for every game in whatever capabilities that we will be in. 'To challenge in every game and every competition and after that we will see where we stand,' Nabi added. In his first season, the Tunisian finished ninth in the league but secured the Nedbank Cup. Another poor season for Nabi, could force the Kaizer Chiefs management to sack him. The team will not compete in the MTN8 competition, which kicks off this weekend. So far, Amakhosi have signed six players, but none of the new players impressed during pre-season.
