Is eThekwini Municipality's R3. 6 million fan park expenditure justified?
Over 10,000 people gathered at the Durban beachfront fan park to watch the Nedbank Cup final on Saturday. eThekwini Municipality's R3.6 million fan parks draw criticism from ActionSA. The eThekwini Municipality splurged big on the Nedbank Cup Final on May 10 with two free fan parks which cost R3,6 million. Albert Park and the Durban beachfront were chosen as sites, and the municipality said these were chosen due to their proximity to the Moses Mabhida Stadium where the sold-out football match took place. According to the municipality, the procurement process for the company that provided the service involved the Section 36 process. Section 36 deviates from regular procurement techniques by allowing the city to acquire goods or services in an emergency or when competitive procurement rules are unrealistic or impossible to follow. The approach allows it to pick a company without pursuing more bidders.

#JustMyView: Postcards from the parallel universe of Ballito
We meet again! It's me, your friendly (I hope) journalist, still trying to settle into suburban life here in Ballito. In my last column, I shared my shock at the absence of washing lines on the streets. Well, good news, my landlord introduced me to the magical invention of a drying rack (also known as a clothes horse). Fancy stuff! Goodbye drycleaning bills. Now, just a quick word to my friends, family and everyone who's quietly moved me onto their 'secret millionaire' list. Yes, I now live in Ballito. But no, I'm not rich. Not even close. If anything, I'm just a broke tourist with permanent residency. To my fellow centimillionaires living off budget rice and hope, sisonke comrades. But seriously, is Ballito still in South Africa? Please don't say yes too confidently. It feels more like a scenic canton in Switzerland or a gated nation with its own rules. The rest of us, hailing from townships and rural corners, arrive like visitors, just long enough to buy groceries, maybe breathe in some ocean air (with terms and conditions), then vanish before sunset like we overstayed a visa. Take the recent Nedbank Cup Final, a Soweto Derby between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs in Durban. The Amakhosi won and South Africa was on fire with excitement! I was travelling back from Stanger and I could hear the hooting, the celebrations, even uncle vibes from behind the wheel. Then I got to Ballito and… silence. Not a peep. Even the birds seemed disinterested. Every weekend, I embark on a quest to find a local pub showing South African football. Nada. European leagues everywhere. Lots of rugby matches or some cricket. I even think some may prefer National Geographic. But not South African football. NEVER! I get it – it's a wealthy town with cultural differences. But guys we're still in KwaZulu-Natal. Join the vibe, it's harmless. I promise you won't break out in a rash if you catch a Kaizer Chiefs game. Ballito residents only seem to remember they're part of KwaDukuza when it's time to complain about the municipality. Not saying that should stop – those potholes aren't filling themselves – or when there's someone in the townships who needs help with donations. Beautiful stuff, truly inspiring. But beyond that? Ballito feels like its own shiny little bubble and most folks here have no idea what it's like to deal with the real hustle, the daily grind or the social ills that exist just outside the gates. Anyway, maybe it's time I get a TV. Because right now? I'm definitely living in a parallel universe. Chiefs' Peterson out to finish the season on a high
'I think we have two (more) cup finals left,' said the Chiefs goalkeeper. ALSO READ: Chiefs' Maart thanks 'father' Kaizer Motaung Peterson was a surprise choice in goal for Amakhosi last weekend as they stunned Orlando Pirates 2-1 to win the Nedbank Cup and finally end a decade-long trophy drought. Bvuma out, Peterson in for Chiefs Before Saturday, Peterson had not played for Chiefs in 2025, with Bruce Bvuma preferred between the poles. But Bvuma was dropped completely from the squad, and Peterson stepped in with a solid performance. Now the question is whether Amakhosi head coach Nasreddine Nabi will stick with Peterson for Chiefs' final two Premiership games of the campaign. Chiefs find themselves in a scrap to qualify for next season's MTN8, on the back of a sorry run of seven Premiership games in a row without a win. Nabi's side play high-flying Sekhukhune United on Saturday at the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane, before hosting Polokwane City in their final league match on May 24. 'I think we have two (more) cup finals left. You know, we want to finish this season on a high,' Peterson told SABC Sport after Saturday's triumph. 'We want to end in the top 8 so we have more trophies, more silverware to play for next season … we'll celebrate tonight and then tomorrow it's back to work.' Tight top eight race The race for the top eight currently has five teams within one point of each other from position eight to 12 in the Premiership table. Chiefs are currently ninth on 30 points, behind Chippa United on goal difference, and ahead of Marumo Gallants on goal difference. Richards Bay and Magesi FC are in 11th and 12th respectively on 29 points. The best way for Chiefs to approach their last two games, however, is to focus on themselves. Miguel says there's no armband tussle with Chiefs captain Maart
Kaizer Chiefs deputy captain Inácio Miguel has stressed that there is no armband rivalry between him and captain Yusuf Maart. The Angolan defender emphasised his 'huge respect' for Maart, dispelled the notion he could a better leader than the former Sekhukhune United midfielder. Maart led Chiefs to their first trophy in 10 years winning the Nedbank Cup final against Orlando Pirates 2-1 at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday. He also etched his name in Amakhosi's history books scoring the goal that ended their agonisingly long trophy drought. Introducing your 2024/25 #NedbankCup Champions ✌️🏆 #SSDiski | #NedbankCupFinal — SuperSport Football ⚽️ (@SSFootball) May 10, 2025 However, discussions on social media and radio chat shows have questioned his leadership qualities, especially in the context of Amakhosi's otherwise poor 2024-25 season. The 28-year-old Maart — who joined Chiefs from Sekhukhune in July 2022, where he was also captain — cuts a quiet figure, in contrast to the vocal Miguel. The Angolan, 29, arrived at Chiefs from Petro Luanda at the start of the season. 'I have huge respect for Yusuf. Yusuf is my captain,' Miguel said. 🏆 ℕ𝕖𝕕𝕓𝕒𝕟𝕜 ℂ𝕦𝕡 𝟚𝟘𝟚𝟝 ℂ𝕙𝕒𝕞𝕡𝕚𝕠𝕟𝕤 🏆 Kaizer Chiefs players' reaction after being crowned the #NedbankCup2025 champions! #SABCSportFootball #NedbankCupFinal — SABC Sport (@SABC_Sport) May 10, 2025 'I respect him a lot — he has a lot of leadership skills. I don't see any difference when it's me or him wearing the armband because we're two great leaders. 'For me, he's my leader. He has played a huge role for the team. He present the face of the team, he never hides. 'He has a lot of personality and character — I love him a lot. I can't say that if I were the captain, things would have been better, no.' 'I will never coach any other team in SA': Riveiro thanks Khoza for time at Pirates 'Over the three years, we have managed to have an open and honest relationship with the management of the club.' Sport 3 hours ago Miguel said Chiefs were pleased to have humbled their naysayers with their Nedbank Cup triumph. 'A lot of people doubted us but look at us now. It was written, no-one can take this away from us,' he told SABC Sports. 'This is a feeling we've been searching for so long. This will stay in my memory for so long.' Chiefs will now fight to finish in the top eight, aiming to win their last two fixtures against Sekhukhune at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday and Polokwane City at FNB Stadium on May 24.

Good news: Why Durban's hotels are nearly FULL this week
With thousands of visitors pouring into the city, Durban's hotels are almost fully booked this week. The city's hosting of events is responsible for this uptick in guests. Hot off the back of the clash between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, Durban is hosting another big gathering this week. The Africa Travel Indaba 2025 trade show kicked off at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli International Convention Centre on 13 May. According to Moneyweb , the indaba will draw thousands of visitors. That explains the high occupancy rates in the city, even after the Nedbank Cup Final concluded on the weekend. Speaking to Moneyweb, Jaya Naidoo, East Coast general manager of the Federated Hospitality Association of Southern Africa, said: 'Hotel occupancy in Durban and Umhlanga is ranging from 80% to 90% during the Indaba.' The indaba, which was opened by Deputy President Paul Mashatile yesterday, is expected to draw thousands of visitors to Durban and its hotels. Over 1300 exhibitors are taking part in the trade show, and it's possible that as many as 2500 to 2600 international guests will attend. With so many travellers, even the Hilton Durban Hotel, which boasts more than 320 rooms, has reopened. This is the first time the establishment has been fully open after the havoc caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The African Travel Indaba is hosted by South African Tourism to promote both the country and the African continent. The three-day event wraps up on 15 May. But it's not the only event keeping hotels in Durban busy this week. The Second G20 Tourism Working Group also brought international delegates to the KZN city this week. As reported by SA News, KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli said that it was a proud moment for the province: 'This is more than a meeting. It is a statement that KwaZulu-Natal is ready to lead, connect, and contribute on the global stage. We are honoured to host the world's tourism leaders and share our vision for a sustainable tourism economy that creates jobs, drives growth, and uplifts communities.' Durban has struggled in recent years, leading the eThekwini Municipality to launch a programme to revitalise the city centre last month. But this week, it's not just Durban's hotels that are thriving among all the events taking place. KZN Tourism and Film Authority interim CEO Sibusiso Gumbi told Moneyweb : 'Eateries around the city will be buzzing and enjoying the economic benefits of hosting an event of such magnitude.'
