Stanley Tucci hopes new Italian food show offers viewers escapism, inspiration

May 18 (UPI) -- Six-time Emmy-winner Stanley Tucci says his cooking and travel shows have opened up his world and changed his life.
His latest docu-series, Tucci in Italy, premieres on National Geographic Sunday, and Hulu and Disney+ on Monday. It follows his previous hit, Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy, which ran for two seasons on CNN.
"it's brought me to places that I never thought I would go to meet people I never thought I'd meet, given me access to places that I wouldn't normally have access to," Tucci, 64, told UPi in a recent Zoom interview.
"I'm just learning more and more about the things I'm interested in -- two things -- which are food and Italy."
Tucci said Mother Nature dictates when and where the series is filmed as much as his own work schedule and personal life do.
Season 1 of Tucci in Italy was shot intermittently over the course of six or seven months.
"It has to be carved out very carefully because it takes a lot to plan it and you have to be aware of the seasons," he explained.
"If you're going to tell a story about, let's say the Palio [festival] in Tuscany, you have to know when is that happening and what access do you have? How long can you actually stay there? You can't just keep flying over," he added.
"You have to plan it out, so you do one or two episodes all at once and then you take a little break because, obviously, you just can't keep shooting that much. It's so tiring and then you have to come home and see your family and stuff like that."
Tucci spotlights Italy's culture and beauty by trekking around the country, taking in the sights and tasting amazing food everywhere from Michelin-star restaurants to local holes in the wall.
"I want them to enjoy it," Tucci said of the show's viewers.
"I want it to be, I suppose, in some ways, a form of escapism, and, yet, at the same time, I want them to understand how complex Italy is, and how diverse it is, and that it isn't just that all the places are sunny and everybody's happy and half the people are Mafiosi," he quipped.
Tucci also hopes the series inspires audiences to seek out locally grown, seasonal food and support local eateries to the extent that their means can afford in the locations where they live.
"That's what Italy is very good at," he noted.
"Contemporary, western societies are becoming less farm-to-table in a lot of ways. Sometimes, the people are fighting to reverse that and, in some places, that's being achieved, but globalization has taken a lot of that away," Tucci said. "So, I think we tried to tell stories that express that, that show the importance of that without being precious."
Tucci understands that not everyone has the access to or money for organic fruits, vegetables and meat.
"Let's face it. In America, how many people can actually afford organic produce? That's the problem," he said. "We have places where there are just food deserts. People have to drive forever just to go to a grocery store and then is that grocery store really going to have organic food?"
The show also emphasizes the social aspects of going out to dine in one's neighborhood or town.
"That's very much a part of Italian culture," the actor said. "That's why there are so many restaurants. People love to go to restaurants. A local trattoria is like the hub of the community and it's a really, really important place."
Tucci admitted that when he's not working, he loves to stay at home and cook for his wife Felicity Blunt and their kids.
"But, after a couple of weeks, I'm like, 'OK, now let's go out,'" he laughed.
The show's debut arrives just weeks after Tucci's Vatican-set political thriller, Conclave, saw a resurgence in popularity due to the real-life election of Pope Leo XIV.
"It's a movie that came from a beautiful novel by Robert Harris, but it's a movie," Tucci said, emphasizing that the work of fiction should not be seen as an historic record, even if it does shed some light on a mysterious process.
"Robert, obviously, did his research and we had a religious adviser on set all the time, so I think it's as true as it can be."

Memorial Day weekend set moviegoing records, and a lot of the sales went to AMC as the largest theater chain. With many expected hit movies slated for release, management thinks it's turned a corner. AMC stock is still down year to date and the company has a lot to prove. 10 stocks we like better than AMC Entertainment › AMC (NYSE: AMC) is the largest movie theater operator in the world, but being the leader in a troubled industry hasn't done much for the company over the past few years. With the advent of streaming and residual fears from the pandemic, moviegoing just isn't what it once was and AMC continues to struggle. However, Memorial Day weekend was a boon for the company and AMC stock has been climbing. Let's see why and what it means for the future. Streaming from home has taken a toll on the box office, but there is still life left in theaters. Four of the top 10 highest-grossing films ever were released since the pandemic started, including Avatar: The Way of Water in the No. 3 spot and last year's Inside Out 2. People are still going to the movies. That fact was reinforced with a record Memorial Day weekend in May. Disney's live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch had the highest-ever four-day Memorial Day opening, and it was buttressed by a strong showing for Paramount's Mission: Impossible -- The Final Reckoning. Altogether, these two topped a blowout weekend with $326.7 million in domestic ticket sales, and Lilo & Stitch is already the second-highest-grossing domestic film of the year. Of course, that success trickled down to generate incredible financial results for AMC. Management said it set an all-time record for admissions revenue, food and beverage revenue, and total revenue for a weekend Memorial Day opening, and that the five-day stretch was the third-highest revenue for any five-day slot in more than 10 years. As for attendance, this was the highest-attended weekend and highest-attended five-day period of the year, both domestically and globally. Management didn't provide specific financial metrics for the weekend, so investors aren't likely to hear the nitty-gritty details until the second-quarter earnings release sometime in July or August. But management's update and optimism are boosting investor confidence. It's nice for the company to have a solid, record-breaking opening, but can it last? Management thinks so, and the market may be pricing that in. CEO Adam Aron said that after this weekend, AMC has turned a corner. "With many more potentially huge movies coming in June all the way through the end of 2025, and beyond that deeply into 2026 as well," he said, "we firmly expect to be enjoying a robust theatrical box office as we look ahead." Here's what to be excited about. Disney has a full slate of films coming out over the next few years, including the third film in the Avatar series. The first two are the highest-grossing and third-highest-grossing films ever, and the next film is slated for release this coming December. It also has the next Frozen film and other top franchises coming out soon. Warner Bros. has its own expected hits coming out, including a new Superman, and Comcast's Universal Studios has the next installment of Wicked and a new Shrek. Sequels to popular franchises can be big business. But the company is still reporting revenue declines and losses as of the 2025 first quarter. It will take some time to see if AMC has indeed turned a corner. As the price has increased in June, so has the short interest in AMC, hitting almost 15% of all outstanding shares. These investors are betting on this being a short-term boost and that the price will fall from this surge. Even though AMC stock is up 29% over the past month, it's still down 15% year-to-date. Unless the company releases incredibly strong earnings for the second quarter and keeps up its performance, the price jump may not last. Part of what's frustrating about that for investors is that many variables are beyond the company's control. It's up to film producers to create hit movies that bring viewers into theaters and to make the decision to keep them there long enough before they hit streaming services. That can be quite lumpy. You need to have real confidence in the future of the film industry and the resilience of theaters as a beckoning call for die-hard fans to want to invest in AMC's future, and for most investors, that time isn't now. Sydney Sweeney released a sultry soap made with her used bathwater — and The Post managed to scoop up two samples before the 5,000 bars sold out in less than a minute online Friday. Advertisement The 27-year-old Emmy-nominated star teamed up with the 'natural manly soap' brand Dr. Squatch to create Sydney's Bathwater Bliss. Here's what our 'judges' had to say about the $8 bars: 4 'When your fans start asking for your bathwater, you can either ignore it, or turn it into a bar of Dr. Squatch soap,' Sydney Sweeney said in a news release. Dr Squatch/MEGA Advertisement 'For starters, it is the worst tasting celebrity bathwater-based product I've ever tried,' Post reporter Chris Harris quipped. 'Sadly, it is also the closest I am ever going to get to Sydney's bathtub,' he added. The regular Squatch soap user said he 'thoroughly enjoyed' the soap, which contains exfoliating sand and is infused with notes of pine, Douglas fir and moss. 'Though, it makes me wonder how much of Sydney's bathwater was actually used in making the soap. I hope not too much, as it is a very manly scent,' he said. 'To someone on the outside it must have looked hilarious: Two grown men hovered over the kitchen counter delicately dividing up a small bar of green soap,' the scribe said. Court was captivated by its squeaky clean scent. 4 'Sadly, it is also the closest I am ever going to get to Sydney's bathtub,' Chris Harris quipped. His roomie, meanwhile, gushed, 'I really like the smell, and something about it just feels extra special.'

Bring Scott Clark's Pre-Surf Fire Cider To The Beach This Weekend

Scott Clark knows a little about being on the coast. His restaurant, Dad's Luncheonette, is a train caboose parked on the Pacific Coast Highway in Half Moon Bay. This casual destination, which serves simple but thoughtfully prepared sandwiches, bowls of soup, and slices and pie, overlooks the Pacific Ocean. 'That's the water I'm in every day of my life, fishing and kayaking, foraging and surfing,' Clark writes in his recent cookbook Coastal: 130 Recipes from a California Road Trip. It is a decidedly different life than the one he was leading as chef de cuisine of Saison in San Francisco, a restaurant with three Michelin stars and ranked 27 on the list of the World's 50 Best Restaurants while he was there. The grueling workload of fine dining doesn't leave much time for surfing in the Pacific Ocean or, as the name of his train caboose restaurant suggests, being a parent. The recipes in Coastal illustrate Clark's decision to leave behind fine dining in 2017 and embrace a more casual lifestyle with his family, without forgetting the knowledge and skills that made him a great chef. It's the perfect companion to an early-morning beach trip, when you need a sip of something to warm you up and get you ready to dive into the cold waters of the Pacific Ocean. It's also a sophisticated, cheffy spin on the health-conscious fire cider trend, which leans on insights from folk medicine to boost the immune system. 'This is a digestive, immune-boosting ripper. I go nuts for it. I chug a hefty pour before surfing because it gets me loose,' Clark writes. 'You can also slam it into cold water, pour it over ice, make a tea with it, whisk it into salad dressing, or if you're feeling real frisky, blend it into a Bloody Mary. But beware: It's not the easy sipper you're looking for; it's a shot of nature's high-octane fuel.' Pre-Surf Fire Cider Ingredients 2 cups unfiltered raw apple cider vinegar ½ cup unpeeled, chopped fresh ginger ½ cup peeled, chopped fresh horseradish root ½ cup garlic cloves, peeled and smashed ¼ cup peeled, chopped turmeric 3 Tbsp honey, plus more as needed 2 serrano chiles, halved lengthwise Peel of 1 lemon, preferably Meyer, pith removed Peel of 1 navel orange, pith removed Peel of 1 grapefruit, pith removed ½ tsp black peppercorns ½ tsp pink peppercorns ¼ tsp fine salt, such as Maldon Instructions In a large mason jar, combine all the ingredients. Use a wooden spoon to push the solids down to submerge them in the vinegar. Crank a lid on the jar, give it a good shake, and store it somewhere dark and cool for 4 weeks. Pour the cider through a fine-mesh strainer lined with cheesecloth into a clean mason jar. Discard the solids. Taste the cider and add more honey, as needed, 1 teaspoon at a time, until it's perfect for you. The cider keeps, in the fridge, for a few months.
