NiGEN 2025 to enhance Malaysia's groundwater management for water security
Department of Minerals and Geosciences Malaysia (JMG) director-general, Datuk Zamri Ramli, said the effort was in line with the aspirations of a MADANI Malaysia in ensuring the security of the country's water supply and environmental sustainability for the well-being of future generations.
He said NiGEN 2025, led by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) through JMG, is a strategic engagement platform that brings together stakeholders from the groundwater-related industry to foster smart collaboration.
'NiGEN 2025 is also a space for knowledge transfer, sharing of advanced monitoring technology and reporting on the progress of the pilot project for pioneering groundwater mapping and development projects in Kedah (PABT Kedah),' he said in a statement today.
According to Zamri, the implementation of NiGEN 2025 supports the principles of inclusiveness, good governance and sustainability which are the core of MADANI Malaysia, in line with current government policies such as the Water Sector Transformation Roadmap 2040 (AIR 2040) under the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA).
In addition, he said the programme is in line with the National Water Resources Policy (DSAN) and the Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) approach which emphasises the use of scientific data and digital technology in addition to supporting the Public Service Digitalisation Agenda through the use of MyGovCloud in the groundwater monitoring system.
'This programme also provides a platform to obtain industry and stakeholder feedback, which will form the basis for improving policies, project implementation and governance of the country's water sector in the future.
'With the participation of international hydrogeological experts, NiGEN 2025 also opens up opportunities to share best practices in groundwater resource management at the global and local levels,' he said.
At the same time, Zamri said that among the key impacts targeted through NiGEN 2025 is to expand the national monitoring network of groundwater resources and provide high-quality data to support the country's water security policy.
He said it is also to improve preparedness against climate change and weather uncertainty; guarantee access to clean and sufficient water in rural areas; and strengthen the technical capacity and innovation in the country's hydrogeological field.
'NRES and JMG are committed to expanding the groundwater mapping project to other states such as Melaka and Sabah to create a more comprehensive, transparent and responsive national water resource management system.
'NiGEN 2025 reflects the government's commitment to laying a solid foundation to ensure the sustainability of the country's water resources, in line with the spirit of a Malaysia MADANI for future generations,' he said. - Bernama

KUALA LUMPUR: Sapura Energy Bhd has changed its name to Vantris Energy Bhd, reflecting its cumulative effort in its corporate transformation. The name change, which takes effect today, follows shareholder approval at an extraordinary general meeting held on July 30. Shareholders also overwhelmingly approved the company's proposed regularisation plan, a crucial component of its financial and operational recovery. According to the company, the new name Vantris Energy reflects its renewed purpose and corporate identity. Group chief executive officer Muhammad Zamri Jusoh said the name was inspired by internal contributions, with over 200 submissions received from employees. "Vantris Energy was ultimately selected as the top choice," he said. The regularisation plan, which received approval from more than 99 per cent of shareholders, comprises four key components: capital reconstruction, debt restructuring, financing, and exemption from a mandatory general offer. As part of its debt restructuring efforts, the company's total borrowings will be cut from RM10.8 billion to around RM5.6 billion, leading to an estimated reduction of more than RM500 million in interest expenses. Malaysia Development Holding Sdn Bhd will subscribe to up to RM1.1 billion in redeemable convertible loan stocks as part of the company's fundraising initiative. The company said the funds raised will be used to settle outstanding payments owed to Malaysian oil and gas vendors, underscoring its continued commitment to supporting its ecosystem. "We are glad that shareholders have actively exercised their rights and played a decisive role in shaping the company's future. "With these approvals, Vantris Energy is now in a stronger position to move forward with renewed focus, financial strength and purpose," Zamri said.

NRES Strengthens National Climate Action Commitment Through ASEAN-Korea Methane Mitigation Project
PUTRAJAYA, July 31 (Bernama) -- The Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) has strengthened Malaysia's commitment to climate action through the ASEAN-Korea Cooperation for Methane Mitigation (AKCMM), worth US$20 million, funded by the ASEAN-Korea Cooperation Fund (AKCF). NRES said that the regional project was being implemented in nine ASEAN member states from 2024 to 2027, including Malaysia. According to NRES, the strategic partnership is carried out in collaboration with the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI), which acts as the implementing partner for the project under the Partnership for ASEAN-ROK Methane Action (PARMA), announced during the ASEAN-South Korea Foreign Ministers' Meeting in 2023. 'This strategic initiative highlights NRES's key role in advancing the national environmental agenda and supporting ASEAN's aspiration towards a climate-resilient community,' the ministry said in a statement today. NRES said this commitment was continued through Malaysia's participation with more than 150 countries in signing the Global Methane Pledge (GMP) at the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26). According to the statement, the pledge outlines Malaysia's commitment to collectively reduce global methane emissions by at least 30 per cent from 2020 levels by 2030. 'To that end, NRES will work closely with industry players to develop a national methane reduction framework and action plan by the end of this project,' it added. Meanwhile, NRES welcomed the potential for environmental cooperation between ASEAN and the United States (US) as well as China. According to the ministry, Malaysia reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening strategic regional cooperation in addressing environmental and climate change challenges through the 4th ASEAN-United States High-Level Dialogue on Environment and Climate Change and the 22nd ASEAN Plus Three Senior Officials Meeting on the Environment.

PM Anwar to table 13th Malaysia Plan in Parliament tomorrow
PETALING JAYA: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will be tabling the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP) in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (July 31). According to a media invite from the Economy Ministry, Anwar will be tabling the 13MP at 11.30am until 2.30pm. Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul said on July 19, the tabling of the 13MP will be the main focus of the Second Meeting of the Fourth Session of the 15th Parliament. The 13MP, which sets the direction for the country's development for 2026 to 2030, is the first by the Madani Government under Anwar's administration as the 10th Prime Minister of Malaysia. Anwar previously said the 13MP was formulated with a focus on the economic empowerment of the people through increased income, inclusive and sustainable economic structural reforms, as well as strengthening governance and efficiency in public service delivery. Apart from that, it also emphasises regional justice, human capital development, and policy reforms to strengthen Malaysia's competitiveness at the global level in line with the principles of Madani Malaysia. In this regard, Johari said this Dewan Rakyat session would provide adequate debate time for Members of Parliament to discuss the contents of the 13th Malaysia Plan while calling on all elected representatives to be professional and use the debate space well.
