Tampa Bay's MerMandy helps Team USA win Merlympics gold medal

Axios09-06-2025
When Mandy Walker first donned a mermaid tail a couple years ago, she never thought she'd end up competing in it, let alone on the world stage.
Why it matters: Walker, a mermaid performer and teacher from Riverview, was one of six athletes who represented the U.S. last month at the Official Merlympics 2025 in Wolfsburg, Germany, the Tampa Bay Times first reported.
And the results are in: Team USA brought home the gold medal, besting more than a dozen other countries with teams in the competition.
"It was a life-changing experience," Walker, who goes by MerMandy, told Axios. "USA blew first place out of the water. It was clear we worked our butts off — or, you could say, our tails off."
State of play: For Walker, 44, that meant training five to six times a week for the last six months, building up her strength and endurance in and out of the water. Swimming with a monofin takes serious core strength.
She did it all as a single mom of four and master's student, without a competitive swimming background or a coach.
In February, her teammates visited from as far away as Indiana and Utah to practice in Florida together.
They drilled their synchronization in the chilly waters of Alexander Springs in the Ocala National Forest and in the deep end at High 5, an aquatics center in Brandon.
Soon, they were off to Germany, arriving a few days ahead of the May 24 competition to practice together a few more times.
How it works: While the Merlympics aren't affiliated with the traditional Olympics, the competition has a similar structure with multiple events for individuals and teams.Along with the synchronized swim, events included:
A 50-meter surface swim testing speed.
An underwater rescue emphasizing the merfolk oath of safety.
An underwater photoshoot judging poise and appearance ("they do say mermaids are vain," Walker joked).
Zoom out: They found time to have some fun, too.
Team members stayed in the historic Hotel Alter Wolf, where they snapped photos with their tails hanging out the windows.
Down the street was Schloss Wolfsburg, a medieval castle where Walker quipped she was just waiting for the moat to fill.
The big picture: Mermaid culture has long had a presence in Florida thanks to the famous Weeki Wachee mermaids.
But the professional scene has grown in popularity in recent years thanks to social media and the Netflix docuseries " MerPeople."
That popularity shined at the competition, Walker said. Folks kept coming up to her saying they followed her on social media.
What she's saying:"To meet friends that are now global — that's just mind-boggling and priceless," she said.

LA 2028 to sell venue name rights in Olympic first

Organizers of the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics will sell naming rights for some competition venues to "unlock an additional revenue stream" in a move that breaks with Games tradition of forbidding brand names on stadiums and arenas. In a statement released on Thursday, LA28 organizers said the "landmark change" will apply to featured venues in support of the "largest commercial revenue raise in sports". "From the moment we submitted our bid, LA28 committed to reimagining what's possible for the Games," LA28 chairperson and president Casey Wasserman said in a statement. "Today's historic announcement delivers on that promise, creating the first-ever venue naming rights program in Olympic and Paralympic history while advancing LA28's mission of a fully privately funded and no-new-build Games." Contracts are already in place with automaker Honda, an LA28 sponsor which already has the naming rights for the Anaheim, California, arena that will host volleyball, and with media and technology company Comcast -- which will have its name on the temporary squash venue. As previously announced, Peacock Theater in downtown Los Angeles will host boxing and weightlifting. Wasserman said the "groundbreaking partnerships" will generate revenue beyond what is already budgeted and "will introduce a new commercial model to benefit the entire (Olympic) movement". "We're grateful to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for making this transformation possible," he added. Naming rights for up to 19 temporary venues will be available, with the IOC's sponsorship partners and LA28 partners having a chance to put their names on Games venues. Companies that already have their names on such Olympic venues as SoFi Stadium and Arena "will have the opportunity to keep existing venue naming rights during Games time", Wasserman indicated. "Clean venue" policies that prohibit advertising on the field of play will still apply. bb/nf

L.A. Olympics To Award Venue Naming Rights For First Time

The Honda Center is commonly known as the home of the Anaheim Ducks. For the LA28 Olympics, it won't lose the Honda moniker, part of a first for the Olympics where LA28 is selling venue naming rights for the first time in the history of the Olympic games. Along with the Honda Center, LA28 announced that the temporary squash venue at Universal Studios will be known as the Comcast Squash Center. The change comes as Casey Wasserman, LA28 chair and president, says the mission to be a fully privately funded and no-new-build Olympics meant working with the International Olympic Committee to create a fresh plan for venue naming rights. 'From the moment we submitted our bid, LA28 committed to reimagining what's possible for the games,' Wasserman says. 'Today's historic announcement delivers on that promise.' While Honda and Comcast are the two companies announced first, Wasserman says there are more to come, generating 'critical revenue for LA28' while introducing a new commercial model to the Olympics. MORE: The Famous 2024 Paris Olympic Venue You Don't Know About Under the new program, qualifying LA28 partners will have the opportunity to keep existing venue naming rights during the Olympics, as well as secure additional marketing assets. That means venues such as SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, host of the opening and closing ceremonies and swimming (yes, expect a temporary Olympic pool in what will become the largest Olympic swimming venue in history) may remain SoFi Stadium if the company buys in, but won't be given another sponsored name if not. For the up to 19 temporary venues, the naming rights become available to worldwide Olympic partners and LA28 partners. Outside of naming rights partners, standard clean venue policies still apply, meaning such sites as Rose Bowl Stadium, Dodger Stadium and the LA Memorial Coliseum will retain their names. Honda was the first partner signed on to retain its name during the Olympics, with the Honda Center hosting Olympic volleyball. 'As a founding partner of LA28, Honda is immensely proud that a world-class sports and entertainment venue like Honda Center will step onto the international stage to power Olympic dreams at the highest level,' says Ed Beadle, vice president of digital services and marketing for American Honda Motor Co. 'We have partnered with Honda Center for nearly two decades and we're excited that it will help showcase Southern California during the Olympic and Paralympic games.' The Comcast Squash Cetner at Universal Studios is the first temporary venue to garner a naming rights partner. It will turn Courthouse Square, an iconic working studio lot, into the home of Squash during the Olympics.
