Cineplex's CEO set to retire at end of 2026
Movie theatre company Cineplex Inc. says president and chief executive Ellis Jacob will retire at the end of next year.
Cineplex board chair Phyllis Yaffe praised Jacob for his work in building the company over the past four decades. The company said Jacob will continue to lead Cineplex in the interim and help in the transition to new leadership.
'Ellis is, quite simply, a giant in our industry,' Yaffe said in a press release.
'It has been a privilege to work alongside him for many years and we look forward to working with him through this transition.'

Jacob was appointed president and chief executive of Cineplex in 2003 when the Canadian assets of Lowes Cineplex Entertainment and Galaxy Entertainment Inc. were merged.
Before his current role, Jacob was president and CEO of Galaxy Entertainment, which he co-founded in 1999.

Cineplex has over 170 movie theatres and entertainment venues across Canada. The company has also long run its RecRoom arcade and dining venues.

RBC analyst Drew McReynolds said Jacob 'has been the visionary beating heart of not only Cineplex but the broader theatrical exhibition industry for decades.'
'While these shoes are next to impossible to fill, we expect the leadership transition at Cineplex to be seamless and believe the transition timing is consistent with what should be a full industry recovery by 2026,' McReynolds said in a note on Friday.

Space testing services to resume at the David Florida Laboratory
LONGUEUIL, QC, June 27, 2025 /CNW/ - In response to Canada's vibrant space sector's need for continued access to specialized space testing services in Canada, the Government of Canada is announcing that MacDonald, Dettwiler and Associates Corporation (MDA Space) will be taking over the operations of the David Florida Laboratory (DFL) in Ottawa. The DFL is Canada's world-class spacecraft assembly, integration, and test centre, located on Shirleys Bay Campus in Ottawa. Testing activities performed at the DFL constitute one of the last steps that spacecraft and space hardware undergo prior to space deployment to demonstrate its ability to survive the stresses of a rocket launch and the space environment. Public Services and Procurement Canada (PSPC), on behalf of the Canadian Space Agency (CSA), has issued a one-year renewable occupancy licence to MDA Space to operate the DFL's unique space testing facilities. MDA Space intends to start offering services to Canada's space sector as early as fall 2025. This occupancy licence is an interim measure to offer options to meet the Canadian space sector's needs. In parallel, the Government of Canada is currently developing a longer-term real property strategy on the use and ownership of the building and the continued access to this highly specialized space testing centre in Canada. 'Creating a legacy': Contest launched for redesign of block in downtown Banff
Parks Canada is launching an international architectural design competition for the redevelopment of a block of buildings in the heart of Banff. Article content The competition, which will be overseen by the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada, comes after a year of consultation and nearly 25 years of work acquiring land in the 200 block of Banff Avenue. Article content Article content The first phase will have interested firms and teams submit proposals 'detailing their past project experiences, qualifications, and capabilities to undertake a multidisciplinary project of this scope and scale,' according to Parks Canada. Of those submitting, only six will be invited to submit full conceptual designs. Article content Article content An independent jury of designers and architects will scrutinize the proposals. A final public review will occur on all designs, before a decision is finalized by spring 2026. Article content Article content The international scope of the competition has been met with a semblance of backlash on social media. In the announcement post on the Banff National Park official Facebook page, commenters questioned why the competition wasn't exclusively offering the opportunity to Canadian teams. Parks Canada said in a June 27 statement that the cross-border breadth 'is intended to attract a range of high-quality, creative proposals.' Article content Despite the competition's clear yearlong timeline, there is no estimate offered on when any new development might cut the ribbon. Other projects designed via competition in Alberta include the Art Gallery of Alberta in Edmonton, and the National Music Centre in Calgary. Article content Article content The federal government identified the need to improve reception, information, and orientation for visitors to Banff in the late 1990s. The central downtown location was selected as one 'where 80 per cent of visitors stop during their trip,' according to the project's overview. Acquiring the 10 contiguous lots of land has taken more than two decades, culminating last year with the launch of a federally funded consultation phase to the tune of $8 million. Article content While the location in the heart of Banff had been dictated in 1982 based on perceived needs of the community at the time, the engagement phase aimed to speak directly to members of the public, including several Indigenous communities and other stakeholders, on what a contemporary vision for the development would require. Article content The feedback will be used to guide the design competition. It listed opportunities the new development has to modernize facilities and open spaces, encourage connection with the national park, and address housing needs for eligible residents.
