Dar Al Omran Rasem Badran (DAO-Badran) has unveiled its latest architectural project in Iraq.
Developed in partnership with Al Ghadeer and BMC, Budoor Al-Najaf seeks to establish a human-centred, culturally integrated and environmentally resilient community in Najaf.
Spanning approximately 50 hectares [123 acres], the development will house more than 1,400 homes available in four sizes: 160, 200, 250 and 400 square metres.
The project will also include a central market, schools, mosque, clinics and entertainment facilities.
A spokesperson for the company told Iraq Business News:
"The master plan of Budoor Al-Najaf integrates traditional authenticity with modern functionality, inspired by Najaf's historical city planning but interpreted in a contemporary style.
" The development [is] structured around a central urban square and clustered neighborhoods, mirroring the historic urban formation of Najaf.
"This central area, featuring a mosque and main urban amenities, serves as a community focal point, fostering social interactions and connectivity."
The first phase of Budoor Al-Najaf is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

Review of National Policy to Develop MSMEs in Iraq

By John Lee. The Iraqi Ministry of Planning held a workshop on August 7, 2025, to review and discuss the final draft of the National Policy for the Development of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) . This policy is set to be adopted as a key national document supporting this vital sector, with ongoing technical support from the International Labour Organization (ILO) under a programme launched in July 2024. Dr. Hanaa Ismail Al-Asadi, Administrative Undersecretary at the Ministry, emphasised the policy's role as a foundational pillar for sustainable economic growth, job creation, and empowering vulnerable groups to enter the labour market. She affirmed the ministry's commitment to a comprehensive reform path providing institutional, legislative, and financial tools to enable MSMEs to expand, contributing to national economic development. Dr. Sabah Jundi Mansour, Director General of Economic and Financial Policies at the Ministry, noted that workshop feedback will be integrated into the final document, which will then be submitted for official approval. Dr. Maha Qataat, ILO's National Coordinator, highlighted that the policy development is based on social dialogue involving the government, employers, and workers. She pointed out ILO-supported initiatives such as "Start and Improve Your Business," financial literacy, and green project support, funded by the Italian Development Cooperation Agency (AICS). Mr. Raimondo Bono, Humanitarian Programmes Director at the Italian Agency, stated that backing this policy aligns with building an inclusive, resilient economy that enhances MSMEs, especially in rural areas, by creating sustainable jobs and protecting the environment through training and policy development. Dr. Qusay Al-Jabiri, a member of the policy drafting committee, presented the technical rationale, challenges facing MSMEs, preparation mechanisms, main themes, strategic objectives, and proposed overlaps. The workshop featured two interactive sessions where participants discussed alternative policy options, set implementation priorities, and allocated institutional roles to ensure successful national application. Participants included officials from the Ministry of Planning, representatives from relevant ministries and government bodies, private sector stakeholders, business associations, and civil society organisations. Chinese Firm starts work at $539m Water Project in Karbala

By John Lee. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia Al-Sudani has launched construction of the South Karbala Water Project, with a capacity of 16,000 cubic metres per hour, during a visit to Karbala Governorate. The 702.5-billion-Iraqi-dinar [$539 million] project, located near Karbala International Airport, will feature a main treatment plant, eight pumping stations, an intermediate station near the Visitors' Road, and transmission pipelines totalling 270 km. Al-Sudani said the government is continuing to implement its programme of development and service projects, aiming to provide essential services and improve living and economic conditions across all provinces. He stressed the need for adherence to specifications, proper preparation from the outset, and the engagement of an engineering consultant with the necessary technical inspections. The project was awarded to the Chinese company Shandong Shiji [Shandong Xieji Construction Engineering] in February 2025. (Source: Prime Minister's Office)
