The Indian Coast Guard 's sixth indigenously built Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV), ' Atal ', was launched today at Goa Shipyard Ltd (GSL), Goa. The vessel was launched by Smt. Shilpa Agarwal in the presence of Shri Rozy Agarwal, IDAS, PIFA, Coast Guard Headquarters. The launch marks a significant milestone in India's pursuit of self-reliance in defence manufacturing . 'Atal' will enhance the Indian Coast Guard's operational capabilities in coastal security anti-smuggling efforts, and maritime rescue operations. It is the sixth vessel in a fleet of eight FPVs being built by GSL for the Indian Coast Guard under the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative.With over 60% indigenous content, these state-of-the-art vessels are designed in-house by GSL to meet the Coast Guard's specific operational needs. The FPVs measure 52 meters in length, displace 320 tonnes, and are equipped for diverse roles including fisheries protection, patrolling the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), and monitoring island territories.They are also capable of anti-smuggling, anti-piracy, and search and rescue operations. Significantly, this is the first time in India that an FPV is being constructed with a controllable pitch propeller, improving propulsion efficiency and maneuverability. The project contributes to local economic growth by generating employment and supporting MSMEs and associated industries.From modest beginnings in 1977 with just seven surface platforms, the Indian Coast Guard has grown into a major maritime force, currently operating 151 ships and 76 aircraft. By 2030, it is expected to reach its target strength of 200 ships and 100 aircraft, positioning it among the world's leading coast guard services.Operating under the motto 'Vayam Rakshamah' (We Protect), the ICG has saved more than 11,730 lives since inception, including 169 in the past year alone. It maintains round-the-clock vigilance with daily deployment of 55–60 surface platforms and 10–12 aircraft across the 4.6 million sq km Indian Search and Rescue Region.Beyond search and rescue, the ICG has played a critical role in maritime law enforcement, having seized contraband worth ₹52,560.96 crore to date. This includes a record haul of 6,016 kilograms of narcotics in the Andaman Sea.Its disaster response operations include key efforts during Cyclone ASNA in Gujarat, flood relief in Gujarat and Wayanad, and complex night-time medical evacuations. The ICG also serves as India's designated authority for oil spill response, conducting national and regional-level pollution response exercises to enhance maritime environmental protection and preparedness.

Shillong: Land acquisition process for the construction of the Shillong-Silchar Greenfield high-speed four-lane corridor has officially begun, with the route passing through Ri-Bhoi district in Meghalaya. District deputy commissioner Abhilash Baranwal has urged residents not to undertake any new construction or development activities within the designated area for the proposed highway. "It is hereby clearly stated that any unauthorised structures — whether temporary or permanent — erected within the proposed alignment after the issuance of this notice will not be considered eligible for compensation during land acquisition or project implementation," a notification issued by the DC stated. It is expected to reduce travel time and distance, thereby boosting logistics efficiency nationwide. The corridor will also improve economic development in Meghalaya, especially in cement and coal-producing areas, and promote tourism by connecting scenic destinations across the northeast. It will link Guwahati, Shillong, and Silchar airports via the existing NH-06, facilitating access for both domestic and international tourists. Meanwhile, the Meghalaya govt, through the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL), is set to acquire land for the corridor's alignment through 34 villages in East Jaintia Hills district. These include Tuber Shohshrieh, Wapung Shnong, Lad Rymbai Datsimpein, Khlieriat East, Borghat, Umkiang, Ratacherra, and others. Informing the public on Tuesday, the East Jaintia Hills district collector said any new construction within the designated corridor area must receive prior permission from the DC's office. "Unauthorised structures — whether private or commercial — erected within the proposed right of way after the issuance of this notice will not be eligible for compensation," the order stated, adding that it comes into immediate effect.

MEMORANDUM OF UNDERSTANDING (MOU) INDIAN COAST GUARD AND INDIAN RUBBER MATERIALS RESEARCH INSTITUTE
New Delhi, 05 Aug 25: Indian Coast Guard and Indian Rubber Materials Research Institute, an autonomous institute, under DPIIT, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on 05 Aug 2025 at Coast Guard HQs, New Delhi, for collaboration with an aim to promote indigenisation of specialised marine rubber & composite products. The MoU was signed by IG Sudhir Sahni, TM, DDG (Materiel & Maintenance), Indian Coast Guard and Dr. K Rajkumar, Director, IRMRI in the august presence of Joint Secretary, DPIIT, Shri Sanjiv. Indigenous prototype development, material analysis and testing of specialised rubber products for marine equipment/systems used onboard Coast Guard platforms are the major objectives of MoU. IRMRI will work closely with ICG for exploring feasibility to develop rubber material spares that are presently imported. Moreover, the existing IRMRI facilities will be utilised for material analysis/ testing of rubber components/ products that are manufactured by Indian Industries for ICG as a certifying agency. ICG shall provide IRMRI with problem statements for indigenisation of rubber products and IRMRI will develop Indian vendors, including start-up/MSMEs, incubated by ARISE, an incubation centre promoted by IRMRI. The MoU between the Indian Coast Guard and IRMRI is a significant step which symbolises shared commitment for Nation building while developing indigenous solutions in specialised domain areas i.e Rubber Material.
