Curragh Saturday tips and race card - list of runners for Pretty Polly Stakes
The only Group 1 winner in the field, the Juddmonte filly,– progressive last season – will be ridden for the first time by her owner's new retained rider Colin Keane and might prove too strong for her six rivals – which include two classy three-year-olds, Twirl and Wemightakedlongway.
A daughter of Study Of Man, Kalpana improved through the ranks last season, winning a Newmarket handicap off 78 in April, and ended her campaign with victory in the Group 1 Qipco British Champions Filly & Mares Stakes at Ascot in October, beating AidanO'Brien's Wingspan by two lengths.
In between, she finished third in Royal Ascot's Ribblesdale before making her stakes-race breakthrough in the listed Glasgow Stakes at Hamilton – which she followed up by proving a wide-margin winner of the Group 3 Unibet September Stakes at Kempton Park.
Her Ascot success, in soft ground, proved the filly's improvement. And on her 2025 seasonal debut, she performed creditably over this course and distance when, having led early, she stayed on late to finish third – beatena a length and a half behind Los Angeles and Anmaat in theTattersalls Gold Cup last month.
A Group winner over a mile and a half, Kalpana boasts rock-solid form over 10 furlongs and, having performed well against the boys last time, she should prove very tough to beat in this fillies-only contest.
The Nicolas Clement-trained Survie, a Group 2 winner, carries French hopes.
But the biggest threat to Kalpana should be O'Brien's Betfred Oaks runner-up Twirl, bidding to give her trainer a first Pretty Polly success since Minding in 2020.
A Group 3 winner last autumn and successful in the Musidora at York ahead of her Oaks bid, she forced the pace at Epsom and was only collared by stable-companion Minnie Hauk inside the final furlong – going down by just a neck.
Clearly progressive, Twirl boasts a rating of 113 and is a serious contender. But the older Kalpana is preferred.
Joseph O'Brien's Wemightakedlongway, a Group 3 winner in Navan before being beaten over five lengths when fifth in the Epsom Oaks, will have her supporters too, along with the Munster Oaks (Group 3) heroine Magical Hope, representing Paddy Twomey.
And Henry de Bromhead's Higher Leaves, successful at listed and Group 3 level in France last year, probably needs to step-up

TEMPLEGATE'S Sunday tips are below after yet another winning NAP on Saturday. Back a horse by clicking their odds. (NO ALIBI Pontefract 3.42, nap). Thesecretadversary lands the spoils in the Coolmore Stud Churchill Stake
Thesecretadversary was not winning out of turn when taking the Coolmore Stud Churchill Stakes, though it was a fair achievement by Fozzy Stack's colt to make that breakthrough in a listed race. Regular rider Seamie Heffernan restrained his mount early and sat in fourth place as Time Bender set a good pace. Easy-to-back favourite Brussels got first crack at the leader, but Thesecretadversary came wide and fast to land the spoils with a degree of authority. Runner-up on all three previous starts, including in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot, he is out of Too Soon To Panic, who won a maiden and a listed race for Stack, and his granddam, Scream Blue Murder, won at listed and Group 3 level for Tommy Stack. 'It was a good performance,' said the winning trainer. 'The last day was a bit of a mess, though I'd say the winner isn't too bad. There was no gallop, and the ground was soft at Ayr, but thankfully he did it well today. 'I'll speak to everyone involved and see where we might go, but there's a valuable Grade One in Canada on the same day as the National Stakes and that might be an option. 'The family has been lucky for us - it all comes from Scream Blue Murder - and thanks to the Rupert and Magnier families for sending them to us.' A younger full sister to the winner is the next to look forward to. Stella Alpina finally and deservedly got off the mark for her career by taking the opener, the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden, and her trainer, Willie McCreery, is hopeful that she can develop into a smart sprinter. This was her first run over the minimum distance and she had the pace to make the running and the ability to find extra to see off Shadow Of The Moon, who made a good race of it. The Junction Gastro Bar & Guesthouse Handicap had a distinctly open look to it, but Ballysax Lil' Mick, trained by Katy Brown and ridden by Killian Leonard, found a way to get off the mark at the 22nd time of asking. An Laochmor set a strong pace but the winner was comfortable chasing it, and picked up nicely to win quite handsomely. Mallavelly, who joined Ger Lyons this year, won for the third time in five outings for current connections by taking the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies' Handicap. James Ryan timed his challenge well and while third-placed Shavasi didn't enjoy the best of luck in running, and fourth-placed Greatest Drama hung rather than going forward, the winner had a little to spare as they hit the line, and is likely to win again. Trainer Andy Slattery continues to saddle winners aplenty and when Shahada Ace, ridden by his son, Andy, ran away with the Don Moloney Plumbing & Heating Ltd Handicap, it was the stable's seventh winner in 11 days. Only three runners went to post for the Cregan Electrical Ltd Race and Nautical Force, who has been a model of consistency this season, won for the second time in his career. Last-time-out winner Crypto Force made most of the running, but Ben Coen was content to sit behind the leader before launching his late effort to land the spoils. The father-and-daughter team of Paul and Ciara Flynn earned the meeting's final trip to the winner's enclosure when Ms Messi finished strongly to take the Gain The Advantage Series (Ladies) Handicap. Formerly an apprentice, the rider took time away but recently returned as an amateur and this horse, owned by friends of the family, Dermot Murphy and Eileen Farrelly, gave her a first winner since 2022.

Sons And Lovers prevails in Ballyroan battle
The Joseph O'Brien-trained Sons And Lovers defeated last year's winner Crystal Black after a tremendous duel for the Group 3 Tote Ballyroan Stakes in Leopardstown, second leg of a double for the trainer and jockey Dylan Browne McMonagle, who has regained the lead in the title-race. Backed into 6-5 favourite, Sons And Lovers made the running, was joined by the runner-up early in the straight and the pair knuckled down for a battle, from which the Carriganog gelding emerged with a half-length to spare, and a similar distance to Siege Of Troy. 'He has some very good form and this was his first try at the trip,' said Joseph O'Brien. 'We were hopeful he'd stay and he saw it out well. 'There's a nice ran for him here on Champions Weekend (the Group 3 Kilternan Stakes). And we'll look at some international targets in the autumn. There's a good chance we might look at the Melbourne Cup. And there are options in the Middle East, and Dubai in the new year.' The earlier, Group 3 Bahrain Turf Club Desmond Stakes went for export for the first time since 2014 as the Jack Channon-trained Johan, having his first run since October and enterprisingly ridden by Ronan Whelan, made all. Registering the 10th win of his career, the eight-year-old held on late in a blanket-finish, beating the Johnny Murtagh-trained pair Alakazi and Chicago Critic with course specialist and last year's winner Mutasarref a close fourth. 'The Channon family have been very good to me over the years and I'm happy to repay them,' stated the delighted winning rider. 'Jack was quite confident about him and it's great that he's won a stakes race. 'This horse is best fresh and likes to get into a rhythm. So the track and the race played to his strengths. He seems to be getting better with age.' Off the track since last October but pipped by French 2,000 Guineas winner Henri Matisse in a Curragh maiden at two, Cadogan made a successful return in the nine-furlong Irish Stallion Farms EBF Maiden, outpointing Slaney Drive by a length before surviving a stewards' inquiry, initiating the double for O'Brien and Browne McMonagle. 'He has always looked a talented horse but has been frustrating to train,' explained O'Brien. 'I've been happy with him for the last few weeks and, after this maiden win, we can look forward to an autumn campaign. He'll probably end up in a handicap, maybe on Champions Weekend and will have no problem stepping up to 10 furlongs.' Slowly away and very green on his debut over course and distance, Aidan O'Brien's Sea The Stars colt Montreal made no mistake in the opening two-year-old maiden, making virtually all under Wayne Lordan and powering clear to triumph by eight lengths. 'He was going nicely before his first run but jumped slowly and was very green,' said O'Brien's representative Chris Armstrong. 'He improved nicely since and Wayne gave him a lovely ride, controlling things from the front. He could be in the frame for the Champion Juvenile (Group 2) on Champions Weekend and will make a nice middle-distance colt next season.' In Sligo, Willie Mullins doubled-up with even-money favourite Mount Sinai (Brian Hayes), who was subsequently claimed by 'Shark' Hanlon, and Forty Kay, Paul Townend's only ride, who forged clear after Whispering Hopes blundered at the last in the Martin Reilly Hyundai Mares Maiden Hurdle. And it was a night to remember for Dara O'Sullivan who registered his first success on board Noble Name, owned and trained by his mother Claire O'Connell, in the bumper.
