Microsoft suddenly kills its movies and TV store on Xbox and Windows

The Verge18-07-2025
Microsoft has suddenly shut its movies and TV store on Xbox consoles and Windows PCs. As of today you can no longer purchase new movies or TV shows from the Microsoft Store on Xbox or Windows, but you will still be able to access previously purchased content on devices.
'Downloads will continue to be available on Windows and in HD max resolution,' says Microsoft, but you'll have to continue using the Movies & TV app on Windows or Xbox to play the content you own rather than access it from another service — unless your purchased movies are part of Movies Anywhere in the US. Microsoft is not offering a refund for purchases, either.
The closure of Microsoft's movies and TV store has been nervously anticipated by Xbox and Windows users ever since Microsoft shut down its Groove Music service in 2017. Microsoft originally launched a movies and TV storefront with the Zune Video Marketplace in 2006, before it was replaced by Xbox Video in 2012. That then morphed into the Movies & TV app and store in 2015, and now a decade later it's going away.
Microsoft is now leaving it up to Amazon, Netflix, Apple TV, and the many other streaming video services to cater for movies and TV content on Windows and Xbox. Microsoft will continue to provide support for any issues playing back previously purchased content, and owners will be hoping the company keeps its servers online for many years to come.

Jim Cramer attributes market resilience to Big Tech's earnings success

CNBC's Jim Cramer reviewed Monday's market action and told investors that stocks' rebound from last week was lead by positive news from the Magnificent Seven Tech stocks — Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, Apple, Alphabet, Nvidia and Tesla. "Now, some of that may be because…the Fed has to cut, maybe even before September — I mean, that's how weak the employment numbers are," he said. "But at the heart of the market's resilience is, well…the Magnificent Seven." The indexes closed in the red on Friday as investors worried about a much weaker-than-expected labor report and President Donald Trump's modification of "reciprocal" tariffs on a number of countries. But stocks reversed course on Monday, and the Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped 1.34%, the S&P 500 added 1.47% and the Nasdaq Composite surged 1.95%. The market doesn't seem to be concerned that Trump suddenly fired the Bureau of Labor and Statistics Commissioner, Erika McEntarfer, and accused her of manipulating jobs data, Cramer said. Many of stocks that had been strong on Thursday but sank on Friday proceeded to recoup their losses during Monday's session, he pointed out. Cramer reviewed recent earnings from the tech titans, starting with Microsoft. He called the quarter "flawless," saying the company seems to be doing well in every segment of business. He noted that its cloud infrastructure division, Azure, saw a huge acceleration in growth. Cramer was also impressed with some figures from Meta's recent report, especially management's claim that 3.5 billion people use at least one Meta product a day. Alphabet is seeing success throughout the company, Cramer said, including its Google search business, Youtube and AI product, Gemini. He also said the Waymo business is building a nice lead over the rest of the autonomous vehicle space. Apple had a "tremendous" report, Cramer continued, emphasizing its better-than-expected growth. He was encouraged by management's comments on artificial intelligence innovations in the future. Amazon also did well, Cramer continued, with good results from retail sales and advertising revenue, as well as decent numbers from the web services division. While Cramer said Tesla's vehicle business is poor, he said it's doing very well as a tech company. He suggested it's worth owning for its autonomous driving and robots. Although Nvidia has yet to report, Cramer expressed optimism about the chipmaker and demand for its products. "Even though the Mag Seven has one hand tied behind its back with Tesla, we had tepid reactions to Apple and Amazon's numbers," he said. "The fact is that these companies, loaded with cash, not outrageously expensive — nation states, I call them — with multiple revenue streams and tight expenses, just can't be beat by any stretch of the numbers or the imagination." Massive AI spending shows early payoff for Big Tech

After months of questions about whether major tech firms were overshooting AI spending, Google, Microsoft and Meta are taking a victory lap after outperforming investors' lofty expectations. 'It's showing it's starting to pay off and companies are doubling down,' Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives said, adding, 'It puts fuel in the engine for tech to rally more in the second half [of the year].' Major tech firms promised eye-popping investments in AI heading into 2025, as they pushed to build out the data center infrastructure that is expected to underpin the development of frontier AI models — a frenzy reinforced by President Trump's own AI infrastructure push. These investments, already under scrutiny because of their sheer size, faced additional pressure earlier this year with the emergence of DeepSeek. The Chinese AI startup released its R1 model, which it claimed could compete with top American AI models and was developed with a fraction of the infrastructure. However, the tech giants seem to have quieted critics so far with the results of their spending. Google kicked off a series of strong tech earnings last week, beating investor expectations with $96 billion in revenue and $28 billion in net income last quarter. The search giant, which initially planned to invest $75 billion in capital spending this year, also upped the ante with an additional $10 billion investment. This raised the bar for Microsoft and Meta coming into this week, said Dave Wagner, head of equity and portfolio manager at Aptus Capital Advisors. Microsoft did not disappoint, reporting $76 billion in revenue and $27 billion in net income last quarter. The company's cloud computing platform Azure surpassed $75 billion in revenue for the fiscal year, up 39 percent year-over-year in the last quarter. It also announced plans to invest another $30 billion in capital spending next quarter, after spending about $88 billion over the past year. The company's stock jumped Thursday on the strong earnings report, briefly boosting the company's market valuation above $4 trillion. It is only the second company in the world to cross the historic threshold, following Nvidia's lead last month.

25 Products With Super Satisfying Results

A mascara for lashes so dramatic, no one will believe you when you tell them you bought it for less than $5 on Amazon. No need to spend hours wrestling with falsies to get the long lashes of your dreams. Reviewers also rave that this lasts all day. Thank goodness! You have better things to do than re-apply throughout the day. A set of acne patches you can apply over a popped whitehead. Simply put the patch over a zit, let it sit overnight or throughout the day, peel it off, and watch it take all the pore-clogging gunk with it. A mold and mildew removal gel that is seriously so easy to use, you'll wonder why you put off cleaning away those eyesore stains in your shower for so long!!! All you have to do is squeeze this over the spots you're looking to fix up, let it sit overnight, and allow it to work its magic! Pretty sure this is concocted with fairy pixie dust. A Dawn Powerwash dish spray capable of cutting through grease five times faster than regular dish soap. Now, you can spend less time doing the dishes and more time watching Love Island: Beyond the Villa as you digest your dinner. Compound W One Step Pads for applying to plantar warts — they just look like bandages, but really, they're working hard to remove those stubborn little guys. Just stick one on and go about your day while the salicylic acid gets to work behind the scenes — it's like a tiny undercover agent for your feet. How's that for low-effort wart removal? The Pink Stuff, a TikTok-famous cleaning product so good, you'll be tempted to part ways with every other cleaning product you own. Seriously, this amazing stuff can be used on a plethora of household items and surfaces (both indoors and outdoors). A callus-removal gel so you can experience the baby-soft feet you not only want but truly deserve. Soak your feet for two to three minutes in hot water, dry them, and apply a generous layer of the gel to your calloused feet. Then let it sit for three minutes, wipe it off, use a foot scrubber of your choice, and bam — dead skin be gone. A pet hair remover you simply swipe over surfaces covered in hair from your furry bestie. It saves more time (and is a heck of a lot easier) than fussing around with a vacuum and lint rollers! Dishwasher cleaning tablets so the machine you rely on to clean the things you use to eat isn't gunking them up even more. These tablets remove odor-causing residue and help get rid of lime and mineral build-up that naturally occurs inside dishwashers. A bottle of nail and cuticle care oil you'll wish you'd bought sooner. With consistent use over time, this incredible solution helps make your nails look fresh and healthy. Evidence of a once-bad biting habit combined with questionable at-home manicure decisions, begone! A vitamin C serum crafted with an A-list roster of skincare ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, niacinamide, salicylic acid, and retinol. It can be used to help treat acne, brighten complexion, reduce the appearance of dark spots, and hydrate thirsty skin. A butt acne-clearing lotion because, yes, acne on the derriere *is* a thing, and if you're reading this thinking you were alone in this struggle, we're here to remind you, you're not. Enter this product, made with pure plant extracts like Australian tea oil, to help target the root of this annoyance on your booty and help kick it in the ~behind~. An oven cleaning spray so next time you open the oven door and pop in dinner, you're not tempted to puke all over it because of the yucky buildup you've let your oven accumulate. A bug bite suction tool to help get rid of itchy bites. Because walking around with bumpy bites and the need to itch them 24/7 is never fun. Kinda rude that little buggies get to munch on our skin and blood, and we have to deal with the consequences after. An aftercare oil that may help reduce the appearance of keloids, bumps, and scars associated with new and old piercings. An aloe and coconut oil after-sun soothing cream because I'm going to make a fair assumption that since it's summer, you're spending more time outside, which means an increased risk of burns. Listen, I trust that you're being smart and protecting yourself from Mr. Golden Sun, but inevitable happens. This stuff will help hydrate your skin afterwards and leave it feeling refreshed, moisturized, and itch-free post-burn. Cleaning tablets that'll make you realize the important task of sanitizing your retainer, dentures, night guard, or any other dental appliances you use can be quick and easy. Simply drop a tablet and your dental appliance into warm water and let it soak! A hairbrush cleaning tool because in the long run, it'll be a heck of a lot cheaper to get rid of the combo of hair, dust, and fluff residing between the bristles than it will be to keep buying new hairbrushes. Water bottle cleaning tablets to get your beloved drinking bottle back to the condition it was in when you first fell in love with it at the store. I, for one, don't feel like taking a brush and soap and scrubbing away, and I'm going to make the assumption that you don't want to either. A shoe stretch spray because you spent too much on those cute pair of boots that have been sitting in your closet alone and abandoned for months, even years now. Time to dust those babies off and show them to the world! Bio-Oil, a skincare oil to help reduce the appearance of scars left behind by acne, pregnancy, injuries, or surgeries, thanks to a powerful (but gentle) combo of vitamin A oil, vitamin E oil, sunflower oil, lavender oil, and chamomile oil. A pumice toilet bowl ring remover so you can easily scratch away at those yucky stains without leaving behind scratch marks in the bowl. A stain and odor remover because those messes and unpleasant smells left behind by your fur babies are no match for its cleaning powers. An immaculately clean carpet AND a wonderful snuggle buddy? Yes, you can have both! A fabric defuzzer you'll just glide over an area of clothing/furniture that's covered in unwanted fuzzies. A makeup brush cleansing shampoo to clean those things you use to apply cosmetics to your precious FACE. Because makeup buildup is yucky, and we don't want you to have to spend money on new brushes and sponges!
