Two jurors withdrew from Giller Prize in the weeks before news of Scotiabank split
TORONTO — Two Giller Prize jurors withdrew from their positions in the weeks leading up to the literary award's split from its lead sponsor Scotiabank.
Canadian authors Jordan Abel and Aaron Tucker say they dropped out for ethical reasons days after being named to the five-member jury for the $100,000 fiction prize.
Executive director Elana Rabinovitch did not say whether the resignations or ongoing protests had anything to do with an early end to the Giller's decades-long partnership with Scotiabank, only saying of the departures by email: "I wish them well."
The Giller Foundation has faced sustained pressure since November 2023 to cut three of its sponsors over their relationships with Israel, most notably a Scotiabank subsidiary's investment in Israeli arms manufacturer Elbit Systems.
Abel and Tucker were quietly removed from a list of jurors on the Giller website sometime between their announcement Jan. 15 and news of the split with Scotiabank on Monday.
In an emailed statement, Tucker said he was never fully on board with the Giller's funding, but initially thought it was something he could "tolerate" for the sake of uplifting writers.
"As I read more and learned more and listened more, I found myself unable to continue as a jury member. I should have taken the time to do this before I said yes, and not rushed naively into my choice," said Tucker, an author of seven books including the novel "Y: Oppenheimer, Horseman of Los Alamos."
Both Tucker and Abel — a Nisga'a writer who most recently won the Governor General's Literary Award for his novel "Empty Spaces" — say they have no plans to return to the Giller jury, despite the end of the partnership with Scotiabank.
The remaining jurors are Dionne Irving, Loghan Paylor and Deepa Rajagopalan, who are all recent Giller finalists.
Many authors and other workers in the books sector have joined a boycott of the Giller, saying they won't submit their works or engage with the prize until the award also severs ties with sponsors Indigo Books and the Azrieli Foundation.
Protesters object to the Giller's partnerships with Indigo for its CEO's charity that supports Israeli Defense Force officers from abroad, as well as the Azrieli Foundation, in part for its connection to Israeli real estate company Azrieli Group, which has a stake in Bank Leumi. The United Nations Human Rights Office has included Bank Leumi on a list of businesses involved in activities relating to settlements in the occupied Palestinian territory.
The initial protests at the 2023 ceremony came just a month after Israel declared war on Hamas over an attack in which the militant group kidnapped scores of Israelis. Israel says 1,200 people were killed in Hamas' initial attack.
Gaza's health ministry says more than 46,000 Palestinians have been killed in the subsequent bombardment, many of them women and children.

J-Pop Star Comes Clean on Claims She's Newest Musk Baby Mama
A Japanese performed dubbed the 'Empress of J-Pop' broke her silence Monday on rumors that she is a secret Elon Musk's baby mama. Ayumi Hamasaki denied the theory that she was one of the multiple women with whom Musk had fathered a child after an another baby mama told The New York Times that he had a child with a Japanese pop star. 'I've been keeping an eye on this, and I guess it's time for me to speak up. Elon Musk is not the father of [either of] my children,' Hamasaki wrote on her Instagram Story, according to Tokyo Weekender. Hamasaki, 46, has two sons with two different men, born in 2019 and 2021. The fathers' identities have not been publicly revealed. The rumors around the singer began to spread when MAGA author and influencer Ashley St. Clair—who gave birth to his 13th child, a son, last year—claimed that the billionaire had also told her that he had a child with a J-pop star. Musk has previously claimed that 'civilization is going to crumble' if people did not have children, stating that 'I do have a lot of kids, and I encourage others to have lots of kids.' 'He made it seem like it was just his altruism and he generally believed these people should just have children,' St. Clair said. According to text messages reviewed by The Wall Street Journal, Musk texted St. Clair in 2023 about a meeting he had with people he referred to as Japanese officials, saying that they wanted him to be a sperm donor for a high-profile woman. 'They want me to be a sperm donor. No romance or anything, just sperm,' Musk texted St. Clair, later telling her that he agreed to give his sperm to the unnamed woman. As social media users and J-Pop forums began speculating which Japanese star St. Clair could be referring to, Hamasaki quickly became the prime suspect. The singer admitted she could understand why this seemed like the 'sort of thing' she would do. 'Even my mom laughed when she heard the rumors, saying, 'This seems kind of Ayu-like,' and if I were someone else, I'd probably be saying 'Ayu is the pop star [St Clair] was talking about, right?' But it's just not true,' she said on Instagram. 'Setting aside my personal image, when my kids are old enough to start Googling things, I don't want them to run into the rumors and think they're true, so I'm firmly denying them,' the singer added. Hamasaki is the best-selling solo artist in Japan, having sold over 50 million albums. Her influence across Asia has earned her the title the 'Empress of Pop.' Musk's complicated family dynamics have long been in the spotlight. His first six children, the eldest of whom died as a baby, were with first wife Justine Wilson, and include transgender daughter Vivian Wilson, who has become a prominent public critic. He went on to have son X, now five, with Canadian musician Grimes, then two more children during an on-off relationship. But in July 2022, when the relationship with Grimes had apparently recently ended, he had twins with Neuralink executive Shivon Zillis. He then had two more children with Zillis, the latest born this year shortly after his son with St. Clair. On her end, St. Clair is currently in an ongoing custody battle with Musk over their son, Romulus, the MAGA influencer wanting full custody over their child. She officially announced the pair's secret child on X in February, asking for privacy from the media and to 'refrain from invasive reporting.' 'Five months ago, I welcomed a new baby into the world. Elon Musk is the father,' she wrote in a statement on X with the caption 'Alea Iacta Est,' meaning 'the die is cast.' In March, Musk also took to his app to claim that he had given St. Clair enough money to take care of their child, despite not knowing whether Romulus was his or not. 'I don't know if the child is mine or not, but am not against finding out. No court order is needed,' he wrote. 'Despite not knowing for sure, I have given Ashley $2.5M and am sending her $500k/year.' According to the Journal, the paternity test results from Labcorp revealed that Musk's 'Probability of Paternity' was 99.9999%.

SiR Claims Drake, Kendrick Lamar Beef Resulted In Toronto Concert Cancellation
SiR is pointing fingers at Drake, claiming the rap superstar may have had a direct hand in the cancellation of a scheduled concert in Toronto last year. During a recent live show in Canada, the Top Dawg Entertainment singer opened up to fans about the behind-the-scenes drama that led to the nixed tour date, which would've occurred in July 2024. 'So the venue in Toronto, which was partially owned by Drake, cancelled the show completely,' SiR revealed to the crowd in a now-viral clip. 'Then when we tried to switch venues, the next venue was like, 'Nah we ain't f**cking with it, I ain't taking no motherf**cking chance.'' The Inglewood native went on to explain that he 'kinda got caught' in the crossfire of the ongoing feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake, citing 'complications' that were 'too close to home for a lot of people.' The cancellation came in the wake of Lamar's explosive diss track 'Not Like Us,' which took direct aim at Drake and has since become central in the latter's ongoing lawsuit against Universal Music Group. Initially, SiR took a diplomatic stance, apologizing to his Toronto fans and attributing the cancellation to the venue. 'So sorry to my Toronto fans. The show has been cancelled. We're working on rescheduling for a later date,' he wrote on social media. 'For those wondering, we sold that show out. It was cancelled by the venue. Not sure why. My apologies again to those that came just to see me.' SiR isn't the only TDE member affected. In 2024, ScHoolboy Q hinted that his own Toronto stop was similarly blocked, writing on X (formerly Twitter), 'THey just cancelled my sHow in TORONTO,' followed by a laughing emoji. 'CANADIAN POLICE DONT WANT NOBODY FROM TDE PERFORMING.' See footage of SiR addressing his cancelled Toronto concert below.
