A major change is that this week's North American International Auto Show will be the last to be held in January, after which the event will switch to June.
The new date, organisers said, will allow exhibitors to move vehicles and activities outside the Cobo Center's halls and into other city venues, unencumbered by cold January weather, exemplified this week by snow and ice.
In a market in which trends can easily be outpaced beyond one event, the need to do so was probably exacerbated by the decision of Germany's big three carmakers – BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Audi – to skip the auto show this year.
The show has long allowed car enthusiasts to sit behind the wheel of the latest models at the start of the calendar year but a more fluid car market in an online world has made sales less seasonal.
Similarly, everyday technology seems to be catching up on those whose job it is to get behind microphones and try and tempt the visiting public into making a purchase.
Although sparkly announcers clasp iPads and outline the technical gadgetry hidden beneath bonnets, people's obsession with their own smartphones often appeared to offer a more tempting distraction.
'It's maddening,' said one such worker at Nissan's stand.
The absence of some pizzazz, as well as top marques, was also noted by patrons.
'It looks like there are a few less cars this year,' one annual attendee said of this year's exhibitors.
'I can't help but think it's easier to stay at home than to brave the snow and come here.'

Gold prices steadied on Tuesday after the previous session's sharp sell-off in U.S. futures from record levels, with investors now focusing on U.S. inflation data that could shape the Federal Reserve's rate-cut timeline. Spot gold was little changed at $3,345.59 per ounce as of 1046 GMT, while U.S. gold futures for December delivery were down 0.2% at $3,394.10. "However, in the absence of an official statement, this convergence may prove temporary, and the two prices could diverge again if uncertainty resurfaces," he said. Focus is also on the U.S. consumer prices index report due at 1230 GMT. Economists polled by Reuters expect core CPI to have risen 0.3% in July, pushing the annual rate to 3%, drifting further away from the Fed's 2% target. "After recent surprise weak labor data, if inflation numbers come in softer, market expectations for a rate cut are likely to rise, which would support gold," said ANZ Commodity Strategist Soni Kumari. CME's FedWatch Tool shows markets are pricing in an 85% chance of a rate cut next month. Looser monetary policy, coupled with political and economic uncertainty, tends to benefit gold. Attention is also shifting to the Fed's leadership beyond the current cycle, with Chair Jerome Powell's term ending next May. Elsewhere, spot silver gained 0.3% to $37.70 per ounce, while platinum rose 0.9% to $1,338.84 and palladium climbed 1.2% to $1,149.25.

Pound strengthens after British jobs data
The pound strengthened against the euro for the fourth session in a row on Tuesday after British labour market data which analysts said would not affect the Bank of England's cautious stance on interest rate cuts due to high inflation. The euro was last down 0.24% on the pound at 86.24 pence, its lowest since late July. The pair have been more volatile this year than last, when the euro and pound traded largely in lockstep, as the Bank of England and European Central Bank have been cutting interest rates at different speeds. The British currency also strengthened against the dollar, gaining 0.28% to $1.3469, though that may change after U.S. inflation data at 1230 GMT which will shape expectations of Federal Reserve policy. The domestic news of the day for the pound was data showing Britain's jobs market weakened in July but less sharply than in previous months. Wage growth, meanwhile, stayed strong in the three months to June, other data showed, underscoring why the Bank of England is so cautious about cutting interest rates. "In any other (developed market) economy, a print as seen today would likely cause alarm bells around the state of the labour market. In the UK, however, this print is, per the initial market reaction, seen as relatively robust," analysts at Morgan Stanley wrote. "The difference, of course, is the central bank's reaction function. The BoE ... seems firmly focused on inflation and spot pay data." The BoE cut rates by 25 basis points last week as expected, but only by the narrowest margin - four of the nine rate setters voted to keep rates on hold due to concerns about elevated inflation, partly due to wage growth. Car shipper says US tariff haze still affecting auto trade flows
Europe's car exporters are still struggling with uncertainty over U.S. tariffs despite last month's trade deal, Wallenius Wilhelmsen, the operator of one of the world's largest car-carrier fleets, told Reuters on Tuesday. The U.S. and European Union struck a trade deal in late July that saw U.S. import tariffs on most goods from Europe, including cars, set at 15%. Cars had initially faced a 27.5% levy after U.S. President Donald Trump hiked tariffs this year. However, the new 15% rate has not yet been implemented for cars, meaning that Wallenius customers such as BMW, Mercedes-Benz and Volvo Cars still face the higher rate. The absence of an executive order from Trump lowering the autos tariff has left the industry holding its breath for potential last-minute changes. "So far we actually do not know exactly what the tariff level will be. Our customers do not know either, so it is too early to say what they'll do," Wallenius CEO Lasse Kristoffersen said following the company's quarterly results. While carmakers raced earlier this year to ship cars to the U.S. ahead of the tariff hike to 27.5%, the opposite happened at the start of the second quarter, Kristoffersen said.
