Barcelona make final decision on Gerard Martin's future

Yahoo4 days ago
Barcelona have made a clear decision regarding the future of Gerard Martin.
As per an update from SPORT, the club has decided that the young defender will remain a part of the first-team squad for the 2025/26 season, unless something unexpected changes the plan.
Martin, who had no previous top-level experience before joining the senior squad last summer, quickly became one of the biggest revelations under Hansi Flick.
Coming straight from the First RFEF, his performances last season exceeded expectations.
In Flick's first year in charge, the 23-year-old full-back showed remarkable development and became one of the most improved players in the squad.
The turning point for Martin came when he started in two of the club's biggest matches – the Copa del Rey final against Real Madrid and the UEFA Champions League second leg at San Siro against Inter Milan.
He was crucial in both games, delivering two impressive assists and showing maturity well beyond his years.

After recovering from a recent injury, Martin featured in both of Barcelona's pre-season games, including a role as a left-footed centre-back against FC Seoul.
Despite interest from Premier League clubs, Barcelona have no intention of letting him go. In fact, the outlet reports that the decision to keep Martin is final, barring a dramatic change.
It is to be noted that the battle for the left-back position will be intense in the upcoming season.
Alejandro Balde remains the club's first-choice in that role, but Jofre Torrents, another rising talent from La Masia, is pushing hard to break into the senior team. The added competition will only raise the level within the squad.
Even so, the coaching staff and the board have full faith in Martin. His growth, tactical versatility, and ability to perform in high-pressure games have convinced the club that he is worth keeping.
For now, Barcelona have shut the door on a transfer, and he looks set to continue in Blaugrana colours.

Former Steelers LB claims Pittsburgh lied to him: ‘It hurts'

This article originally appeared on Former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Robert Spillane was a team and fan favorite during his four-year tenure in the Steel City. However, he revealed it wasn't enough to receive another contract, even though he thought one was coming. Spillane joined the Steelers in 2019 and improved his production every year until he became a free agent following the 2022 season. He eventually signed a two-year deal with the Las Vegas Raiders, but that wasn't his ideal scenario. 'Before I went into free agency, [the Steelers] told me, 'Go out, test the market, see what you get. We're gonna offer whatever they give you. We wanna make you a Steeler. We love you,''Spillane said on the Bussin' With The Boys podcast. 'I call them, 'I got an offer from the Raiders. I want to come back, what's the deal?' They were like, 'Good luck, have fun.'' NFL Preseason News: Browns' Kevin Stefanski confirms Shedeur Sanders' start, Panthers' Jimmy Horn Jr. in car crash, Chargers reunite with old friend, Aaron Donald sparks Rams speculation

NFL Preseason News: Browns' Kevin Stefanski confirms Shedeur Sanders' start, Panthers' Jimmy Horn Jr. in car crash, Chargers reunite with old friend, Aaron Donald sparks Rams speculation originally appeared on The Sporting News The NFL preseason is officially underway, and Wednesday's headlines have everything from unexpected starters to nostalgic reunions and even the possibility of a Hall of Famer coming out of retirement. Jaycee Horn involved in car accident, will not practice today The Carolina Panthers will be without cornerback Jaycee Horn for today's joint practice with the Cleveland Browns after being involved in a minor car accident. Horn is 'fine' and didn't suffer any serious injuries, but the team is being cautious, per Darin Gantt of It's the latest setback for Horn, who hopefully isn't injured for a squad who desperately need him in the secondary healthy. Kevin Stefanski confirms Shedeur Sanders will start in preseason opener Shedeur Sanders is finally getting what fans have been calling for. Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski confirmed Sanders will start Friday night's preseason opener against Carolina, as announced by @AroundTheNFL. 'Browns coach Kevin Stefanski confirms Shedeur Sanders will start preseason opener vs. Panthers on @nflnetwork; Tyler Huntley only other QB available,' the post stated. This could be exactly the moment Shedeur needs. No one really expected this after he was buried on the depth chart. Now he gets the start with facing not only the highest expectations ever, but in little time. What if he does well? Comes out, leads a drive, and throws a touchdown. Do you take him out? No! You let him keep going. What if he wins? Then, Stefanski doesn't let him have first-team snaps again, the media will run amok with headlines. One must hope Stefanski doesn't sabotage this young man's chance. Chargers reunite with Keenan Allen Just one year after parting ways, the Los Angeles Chargers are bringing back wide receiver Keenan Allen on a one-year deal worth up to $8.5 million, according to Allen, who spent 10 seasons with the team before being traded to the Chicago Bears, now returns to help mentor the Chargers' young receiver room and give quarterback Justin Herbert a trusted veteran target. This reunion also signals the franchise's intent to balance development with familiar stability as the offense continues to evolve under new leadership. Aaron Donald teases unretirement if Rams land Micah Parsons A simple fan-made graphic of Micah Parsons in a Rams uniform sparked an unexpected firestorm of speculation this week. As shared by R.J. Ochoa, Rams legend Aaron Donald commented on the Instagram post saying that if Parsons were to join the Rams, he 'might have to get in football shape.' Parsons responded playfully, but the idea has sent fans spiraling. Imagining a defensive line featuring Donald, Micah Parsons, Jared Verse, and Kobie Turner is the kind of nightmare fuel that would send offensive coordinators to throw their clipboards. It's arguably a scarier unit than if J.J. Watt had joined the Rams instead of the Cardinals in 2021 Donald, for the record, doesn't look retired. In a recent video with Jared Verse about how his time working out with Donald went, he outworked the rookie, a subtle reminder that the GOAT still has plenty in the tank if the moment ever calls for a return.

Juventus eye Arsenal defender in surprise summer transfer

Juventus eye Arsenal defender in surprise summer transfer originally appeared on The Sporting News Juventus have identified Arsenal defender Jakub Kiwior as a potential replacement for Lloyd Kelly if the Englishman leaves the club this summer, Sporting News understands. The Serie A giants are weighing up a move for Kiwior, who has attracted interest from several European clubs in recent months. Kelly joined Juventus from Newcastle in January on an initial loan deal with an obligation to buy for £14.7 million ($18.7m). He had joined Newcastle only the previous summer on a free transfer from Bournemouth and made just 10 appearances before making the switch to Italy. Kiwior, 25, signed for Arsenal from Spezia in January 2023 for a fee of £20 million ($25.5m). The Poland international has struggled to cement a regular starting place in Mikel Arteta's side, making just 10 Premier League starts last season. 📲 Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp Porto attempted to sign Kiwior earlier this summer but dropped their interest after Arsenal made it clear they would only consider offers in the region of £26 million ($33.2m). Despite the limited game time, Arteta is understood to be keen to keep Kiwior, who is valued for his versatility across the backline. The Arsenal boss publicly praised the defender in May following a run of games that came while Gabriel Magalhaes was sidelined with a hamstring issue. "He deserves a lot of credit because he hasn't played too much throughout many months, and suddenly he's been thrown into the most difficult context, at the highest level, playing against the best opponents," Arteta said. "I think he's been exceptional." With Gabriel yet to feature in pre-season, Kiwior is expected to start alongside William Saliba in Arsenal's Premier League opener against Manchester United on 17 August. Who else could leave Arsenal this summer? Elsewhere, midfielder Fabio Vieira is in talks with Bundesliga side Stuttgart over a permanent move. The 25-year-old is surplus to requirements at the Emirates after an underwhelming three-year spell. Signed from Porto for £30 million ($38.3m), he made 49 appearances and returned to his boyhood club on loan last season. His departure would clear further space in midfield, especially following the rise of teenager Ethan Nwaneri, who has impressed Arteta and the coaching staff. Reiss Nelson is also in talks over a potential return to Fulham. The 24-year-old winger has struggled for regular playing time at Arsenal and could leave the club permanently if a deal is agreed.
