Teenager pleads not guilty to raping student in school store
KOTA BHARU: A teenager pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to a charge of raping a 15-year-old female student at a secondary school in Kuala Krai in April last year.
The 18-year-old boy was charged under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code, which carries a sentence of up to 20 years imprisonment and caning upon conviction.
However, as the accused was a minor at the time of the alleged offence, sentencing provisions under Section 91 of the Child Act 2001 apply.
Deputy public prosecutor Ahmad Faiz Fitri Mohamad proposed bail at RM15,000, while defence counsel Wan Norfarhan Liyana Wan Baharunddin requested a lower amount, citing the accused's low-income parents who work as daily-wage labourers.
She also informed the court that the accused, a recent Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia graduate, is scheduled to begin matriculation studies next month.
Judge Zulkifli Abllah allowed bail at RM5,000 with a condition that the accused does not tamper with prosecution witnesses, and fixed case mention for June 26.

Abdullah Ang, inmate who had water bed in Kajang Prison, has died
PETALING JAYA: Ang Swee Kang, a former managing director of the now-defunct Malaysian Overseas Investment Corporation who sparked national outrage in 1989 for receiving luxury and privileged treatment while jailed in Kajang Prison, has died. Better known as Abdullah Ang, 79, he breathed his last on Wednesday (May 28) after a long illness. Ang, who was sentenced to eight years' jail and fined RM100,000 in 1986 for criminal breach of trust involving over RM338,000, was embroiled in another scandal just three years later during incarceration when an English-language daily revealed he was receiving special treatment in Kajang prison. This triggered public uproar over preferential treatment for wealthy or well-connected inmates. Soon after, several prison officials faced inquiries and a shake-up of the Prisons Department followed. Ang's former legal adviser, Selva Sugumaran, who worked for Ang for over 25 years, told The Star that the businessman had been unwell for eight years and was frequently hospitalised. He said Ang had ventured into business soon after his release from prison and ran a latex glove manufacturing company. Selva, 64, said he and Ang stayed in touch over the years until his demise on Wednesday. Ang's funeral is scheduled for this coming Monday (June 2) in Kuala Lumpur.

Public advised to be alert: Beware of fraudulent haj offers
KUALA LUMPUR: The public is reminded to exercise caution when purchasing haj packages, following Saudi Arabia's recent decision to tighten the issuance of Mujamalah (special quota) visas for Malaysian pilgrims. Acting Director of the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (JSJK) Datuk Seri Muhammed Hasbullah Ali said that in light of the tightened issuance of Mujamalah visas, the department anticipates a rise in haj fraud syndicates promoting seemingly attractive fake packages to deceive unsuspecting victims. He advised the public to remain vigilant and avoid falling prey to such scams by verifying whether the company or agent offering the package is officially registered with the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) and Pilgrims Fund Board (Lembaga Tabung Haji - TH). To date, the police have received one report involving haj package fraud, with losses amounting to RM71,000, he told a press conference here today. He said this year, Saudi Arabia has reduced the number of Mujamalah visas for Malaysians to perform the haj pilgrimage, and because of that, the issuance of permits has become much stricter. According to Muhammed Hasbullah, a special task force has been formed by Bukit Aman, in collaboration with MOTAC and TH, to address the issues of stranded haj pilgrims. It will coordinate investigations, manage documentation and take legal action against those suspected of involvement in fraudulent haj package offers. GOF thwarts border smuggling of cattle, exotic birds
KOTA BHARU: The Southeast Brigade of General Operations Force (GOF) thwarted two smuggling attempts involving cattle and exotic birds in raids conducted under Op Taring Wawasan Kelantan Friday night. GOF Southeast Brigade Commander Datuk Nik Ros Azhan Nik Ab Hamid said in the first raid, a team of GOF Battalion 8 members stopped a lorry driven in suspicious circumstances at Kampung Wakaf Simen in Tanah Merah at 11.15 pm. 'Upon inspection, we found 15 cows smuggled in from Thailand without any valid documents, with the value of the seized items, including the lorry, estimated at RM186,000. 'The driver, a 52-year-old Malay man, was arrested and believed to be transporting the cows to the local markets for Hari Raya Aidiladha,' he said in a statement today. He said the suspect and seized items were handed over to the Kelantan State Veterinary Services Department for investigation under Section 36(1) of the Animals Act 1953. In another raid near the illegal Paija base in Pengkalan Kubor, Tumpat, GOF members discovered several boxes and animal cages abandoned on the riverbank during a patrol at almost midnight. 'The boxes contained three exotic parrots and a white peacock, estimated to be worth RM65,000, which are likely smuggled in from a neighbouring country. 'The case is being investigated under Section 60(1)(a) of the Wildlife Conservation Act 2010 and all the seized items have been handed over to the Kota Bharu Wildlife and National Parks Department (Perhilitan) for further investigation,' he said.
