Struggling Gucci owner names new CEO

PARIS - French luxury group Kering announced Monday that it had appointed Luca de Meo, who helped drive automaker Renault out of crisis, its new chief executive as it tries to turn around the fortunes at its struggling flagship brand Gucci.
De Meo's appointment "marks a decisive step in the evolution of Kering's governance and strengthens the Group's leadership as it enters a new phase of its development", the company said in a statement.
It said de Meo would take over the reins on September after shareholders approve the change in the governing structure that will see the chief executive and board chairman roles split at the group that owns Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Balenciaga and other premium brands.
Francois-Henri Pinault, whose family controls the holding that is the largest shareholder in Kering, will remain board chairman.
Kering has struggled to turn things around at Gucci, the Italian fashion house famous for its handbags and which accounts for half of the group's overall sales.
Shares in Kering shot nearly 12 percent higher on reports of de Meo's imminent appointment, which was only confirmed by the company after the closing of the Paris stock exchange.
Renault shares, however, fell 8.7 following its announcement Sunday that Luca de Meo, 58, would step down on July 15 "to take on new challenges outside the automobile sector" after five years at the helm of the company.

Known as a skilled communicator and marketing expert, de Meo is credited with bringing stability to a company that was in turmoil when he took over in 2020.
The automaker was reeling from more than a year of crisis in the wake of the scandal involving Carlos Ghosn, the former head of the Nissan-Renault alliance who fled Japan to avoid trial.
De Meo accelerated the group's shift to electric vehicles and pushed for an upmarket move in an effort to steer the company out of trouble. Renault also owns the Dacia and Alpine brands.
The automaker managed to avoid the sales slowdown that has hit its main rivals, and has maintained its guidance for a gross operating margin of more than seven percent this year.

Monday's jump in Kering's share price still leaves long-term investors deep in the hole.

"Kering shares have lost 28 percent since the beginning of the year and 78 percent since its peak in mid-2021, a drop largely due to the drop in its leading brand Gucci," said analysts at Bernstein bank in a note.
"Kering needs to change as the group's performance continues to deteriorate," they added.
The company's sales slid 12 percent last year to 17.2 billion euros and net profit tumbled by 64 percent to 1.1 billion euros.
Shares in Gucci fell by 23 percent in 2024, and in February it parted ways with its creative director, Italian designer Sabato De Sarno, after a collaboration that lasted two years and failed to turn things around at the fashion label known for its handbags with the double G logo.
In March it appointed Demna Gvasalia from its Balenciaga brand as chief designer, and has also appointed new designers at Balenciaga, Yves Saint Laurent and Bottega Veneta.

Analysts at RBC Capital Market said that de Meo may be able shake up the Kering's senior management, which consists mostly of insiders.
"We assume Mr de Meo will act as a spearhead for the business, and as an outsider be more willing to make tougher decisions, and to add depth to the leadership team," they said.
They also said "we question whether he has the relevant luxury sector experience despite his strong resume in terms of strategic viewpoint and turnaround credentials."
Analysts at Citi were also skeptical.
"De Meo is perceived to have largely contributed to Renault's turnaround.... However, execution of luxury brand turnarounds has become more complex, lengthy, costly, and far less public-market-friendly in the past few years," they noted.

Silver Arrows' first victory of the year was backed-up by its rookie driver, Kimi Antonelli, finishing third to score his first ever Formula 1 podium finish. George Russell secured his and Mercedes' first win of the season in the Canadian Grand Prix on Sunday in an eventual 1-3 finish for the Silver Arrows. Delight for Mercedes, despair for McLaren The Briton beat four-time world champion Max Verstappen by 0.228 seconds under the safety car to claim his fourth career victory with his teenage teammate Kimi Antonelli finishing third. The Italian rookie became the third-youngest podium finisher in Formula One history, showing composure in resisting late intense late pressure from championship leader Oscar Piastri, who survived a collision with teammate Lando Norris on his way to fourth. That ensured he extended his lead in the drivers' standings to 22 points ahead of Norris who crashed into him on lap 67 of the 70 lap race, breaking his front wing as he attempted to pass on the straight. 'Yep, I'm sorry,' said Norris of his crash. 'It's all my bad, all my fault. Unlucky, sorry. Stupid from me.' Charles Leclerc finished fifth ahead of Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton, Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso and the Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg. Esteban Ocon finished ninth for Haas, marking their 200th race with a solid points finish, ahead of Williams' Carlos Sainz. Race in detail The top six were all on mediums when the lights went out, Russell reacting quickest to pull clear while Antonelli passed Piastri for third. Verstappen clung on to Russell's early pace, staying within a second of him throughout the opening five laps, and three clear of Antonelli, as he tried to put him under pressure, but by lap seven, the Mercedes was 1.5 seconds clear. By lap 10, it was two seconds as the Dutchman eased to save his tyres before pitting early on lap 13, for hards. This promoted Antonelli to P2 behind Russell with Piastri third ahead of Hamilton, Norris and Alonso. Verstappen rejoined ninth as Russell reacted and pitted, returning in seventh on hards before Antonelli pitted from the lead on lap 15 leaving Piastri leading Norris in a McLaren 1-2. Piastri pitted on lap 17 for hards, gifting Norris the lead after starting seventh on hards. After a quick start, Hamilton pitted on lap 16 and came out trapped 10th in traffic, with reported damage to his car, that delayed his pursuit before Russell, on lap 26, swept past Leclerc for second. Two laps later, Leclerc pitted for more hards followed by Norris, who took mediums. 'I don't understand this choice,' complained Leclerc, knowing it meant he had to pit again. All this restored Russell and Verstappen to lead again ahead of Antonelli and Piastri with Norris charging in fifth, ahead of the two Ferraris. Verstappen was early to pit again, on lap 37, but with a fast out-lap passed Antonelli, as Mercedes responded in vain to the Red Bull under-cut and began the second stops. Only five seconds separated the top four as they began a furious final 10-lap dash to the flag that resulted in the McLarens battling wheel-to-wheel for fourth place near the end when Norris hit the rear of his team-mate's car and crashed out of the race. 'I've not actually seen the incident, so I don't know exactly what happened, but if Lando has taken full responsibility then that's how it goes I guess,' Piastri said. 'It was just a bit of a tricky race in general and not an ideal finish.' 'There's no one to blame but myself, so I apologise to the whole team and to Oscar as well for attempting something a bit too silly. Glad I didn't ruin his race and yeah apologies to the team,' Norris said.

Ferrari has unveiled its new Piloti Ferrari 296 Speciale. A product of the Italian carmaker's Tailor Made programme, it's designed to celebrate the marque's successes achieved in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and to honour Ferrari client-racing drivers. The unique specification, reserved for clients involved in Ferrari's official sporting activities — both competitive and noncompetitive — is inspired by the 499P, overall winner of the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2023, 2024 and 2025 in the Hypercar category. As such it features a bespoke exterior treatment with a choice of four racing-inspired colours: Rosso Scuderia, Blu Tour De France, Nero Daytona and Argento Nürburgring. All four shades are offset by contrasting flashes of Giallo Modena (Ferrari's famed yellow hue) and a hand-painted WEC logo. The aerodynamic front splitter wears an Italian flag and customers can choose a number of their choice to be applied to the bonnet and doors. The cabin gets racing seats upholstered in black Alcantara, with inserts made from the same fireproof fabric used to make the overalls worn by Ferrari factory drivers. The livery number is reproduced on the interior carbon fibre, while the metal footwell surface can be customised upon request. The personalisation is completed by a carbon identification plaque and a carbon-fibre door sill owners can customise with a personal inscription. Power is provided by a 515kW 3.0l twin-turbocharged V6 petrol engine. Mounted between it and the eight-speed dual-clutch gearbox is an e-motor that makes available a total system output of 648kW. Performance is rapid to say the least, with Ferrari claiming 0-100km/h in 2.8 seconds and 0-200 km/h in 7.0 seconds. Top speed is said to be greater than 330km/h.
