Olympic champ Beatrice Chebet smashes world record in women's 5,000-meter
Running just in front of world-record holder Gudaf Tsegay of Ethiopia as the finish line neared in a blistering women's 5,000-meter Saturday at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Ore., Kenya's Chebet found another gear and left a tired Tsegay to watch as she cruised to the finish and made history. Chebet finished in 13:58.06 at Hayward Field to seize the world record and become the first woman to run the distance in under 14 minutes.

The mark was more than two seconds faster than the previous world record of 14:00.21, set by Tsegay in September 2023, also at Hayward Field. Until Saturday, only one other person had come within four seconds of Tsegay's record.
But that one person was Chebet last month. The 25-year-old, who's also the reigning Olympic champion in the event, posted a then-personal-best time of 14:03.69 in June in Rome to join Tsegay as the only two women to run the 5,000 in less than 14:05. Chebet now owns five of the 10 best times ever in the event.

Kenya's Agnes Jebet Ngetich added her name to the sub-14:05 list Saturday, posting the third-best time ever in the event to take second in 14:01.29. Tsegay finished in third at 14:04.41.
Chebet's run was one of the highlights of a busy day in Eugene that also featured Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, a 400-meter hurdles specialist, running the flat version of that distance.
McLaughlin-Levrone won the race, posting a personal season-best time of 49.43, the sixth-fastest time in 2025. The field had some notable absences, including current world-lead holder and Paris silver medalist Salwa Eid Naser of Bahrain and the Dominican Republic's Marileidy Paulino, the Olympic champion.

'Not my best work, honestly,' McLaughlin-Levrone told NBC Sports' Lewis Johnson after the race. 'Just happy to be back out after a month (off) of racing, shake out the dust a little bit. … A lot to work on, a lot to go and look back at. But, grateful for the win.'
In the men's 100-meter, Jamaica's Kishane Thompson — the Olympic silver medalist in Paris — cruised to a win in 9.85 seconds, topping Great Britain's Zharnel Hughes and American Trayvon Bromell. Thompson was the only runner in the field who was also in the Olympic final, won in a photo finish by his American rival Noah Lyles.
In the women's long jump, American star Tara Davis-Woodhall came up big when she needed it most, jumping 7.07 meters on her final attempt to take the win away from Germany's Malaika Mihambo, who went 7.01.
In the men's hammer throw, American Rudy Winkler set a national record and a world-lead distance of 83.16 meters to win in Eugene. The 30-year-old took sixth in the hammer throw at the Paris Olympics.

Thad Jean targets Cedric Doumbe following 2025 PFL championship win
Thad Jean has set his sights on one of the most dangerous strikers in MMA after capturing the 2025 PFL welterweight title. Jean (11-0) is looking to throw down with former two-time Glory Kickboxing champion Cedric Doumbe. The interest comes on the heels of Jean's big win over Logan Storley to win the 2025 PFL welterweight tournament earlier this month in Atlantic City. Jean knows there are many top names wanting to take his unbeaten record, but out of all the contenders, Doumbe excites Jean the most. "I would love that Cedric Doumbe fight," Jean told MMA Junkie. "Personally, if it was up to me, I would definitely go that Cedric Doumbe route first. I've been looking at him for a while now actually." Doumbe has also shown interest in the fight with some recent comments on social media. Jean wouldn't mind visiting France to fight in enemy territory. His only request is the timeline. "If they're talking about December, then yeah, I'll do it," Jean explained. "If they're talking about anything closer, I'm not going to do it. I'm just going to take a little break. I'm not trying to damage my kidneys with the weight cut because two weight cuts within five months, it's a bit much for the kidneys. If it's in December, I'm taking it, let's go. If we're going to Paris, let's go to Paris. If they're coming over here (South Florida), let's do it." Jean burst onto the MMA scene earlier this year. He was a relatively unknown prospect at the start of 2025, but a knockout win over Mukhamed Berkhamov, a decision win over former Bellator champion Jason Jackson, and the title-winning performance over Storley put Jean on the map as one of the more exciting fighters in the PFL today. Although it might seem that a lot has changed, it's business as usual for Jean. "Not for me personally, but I feel like it did for those around me and those who are skeptical on the outside looking it," Jean said. "I mean, it did help my confidence when it comes to going against just a wrestler itself. Logan Storley is a really good pressure wrestler, and for me to go out and be able to be as calm as I was, and fight the fight that I did for all five rounds definitely played me personally with going back into the training room, 'Ok, this is how I have to improve. This is what I can do.' So, yeah, it definitely set me up for the future skill wise, but for people on the outside looking in I feel like they're noticing, 'Oh, yeah. He's just starting out in his career, and he's now 11-0, he's beaten two world champions, and the sky is the limit. Where is this kid going to go? He can go wherever he wants to.' Obviously, the hype was there with the way he entered the building, uh, with cornerback Tony Brown by his side with a massive speaker on wheels blasting one of Shidoor's unreleased tracks that got a lot of pop. And a lot of cameras, and there was some national, there was a national network that described Tony Brown, a 6-year veteran of the NFL, a former track champion in high school, coming out of Texas as a member of his entourage, not just like a core special teams player who played 32 defensive snaps that night. Um, but when you saw all that hype, I think there were some people that were like, oh boy, here we go. But then he got out there and he looked the part. But Joey, the, the demeanor and the like, been there, done that calmness, and I think even the modesty on the Sideline when he was interviewed in game on the local news five broadcast with our friend Adii Kingawala where he didn't want to say, yeah, I did it, look at me, he gave himself Joy, a C grade when Adii asked him for a grade and all he did was point out the things he did wrong. Yeah, I love you mention the secrets and I we'll get to the Giants and Jackson Dart, who called his performance mid when asked by Brian D. So some say C, some say mid, some say average. We have to keep up with all of the terms. But I think for me, did we really ever have questions whether Shado Sanders was a gamer and whether he had the instincts and whether he can play backyard football. I think the question when I was there during mini camp was much more, hey, how can he operate the offense? Can he operate it cleanly? Can he make decisions at the line of scrimmage? But what I am drawing the analogy or the the similarity here is the reaction online of, of the fans. Um, it's almost as if there's a, a Russian bot army out there, and I say that sarcastically. Any single piece of Shidor content, good, bad, indifferent. Matter of fact, presented without comment, will get. Like an amount of reaction that I don't know that I have ever seen since Tim Tebow. It is a polarization, um, a fanboy and I love to hate him that I have never seen since Tim Tebow. No, I, I, I mean, in some ways, and, and we kind of discussed this a little bit last week, one of the worst case scenarios for Kevin Stefanski was Shadour playing this well, and I'm not saying he's saying about Phil or anything like that. I'm saying now Stefanski can't stop the hype train. Like everybody's going to be asking about Shadour even more than they were before. And I think Shadour's been, it was very interesting and you brought up his sideline interview with Adii and she she kept trying to, and she's great at her job, absolutely professional. She kept trying to get him to say something positive, right? Like, hey, but what about this? What were you proud of? What were you? And she just kept the same way all the time. I didn't do well enough. I got to do better. I'm not where I need to be. I thought that was a very professional approach for a guy who does get all this attention unprecedented for a 5th round pick.
