Algerian broadcaster erases Morocco's identity from Women's Africa Cup coverage

Ya Biladi08-07-2025
In a move that underscores a systematic determination to erase all references to Morocco, Algerian public television deliberately concealed the logo of Royal Air Maroc (RAM), the Moroccan national carrier and one of the official sponsors of the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations, currently taking place in Morocco from July 5 to 21. The incident occurred during the broadcast of a press conference held on Sunday by coach Farid Benstiti.
The airline's logo, prominently featured on the official CAF-approved backdrop, was removed from the footage, in clear violation of the tournament's visual identity. This manipulation was exposed after other unaltered clips surfaced, including one posted by La Gazette du Fennec, showing the full sponsor backdrop, confirming the removal was intentional and prompting a wave of ridicule on social media.
This incident is not an isolated case but part of a broader pattern in Algerian public media, which routinely erases or ignores any mention of Morocco, whether by omitting coverage of the national team's achievements or avoiding references to Morocco's name or imagery, even in major continental and international events.
It is important to note that official sponsors of continental tournaments are legally protected through agreements signed with CAF, which require all media outlets to respect the tournament's visual identity, including sponsor logos. From this perspective, the removal of Royal Air Maroc's logo constitutes a clear breach that could subject Algerian television to legal or regulatory consequences.
The efforts to erase Morocco's presence did not stop there: images originally published on the official account of the Algerian women's national team and later shared by the Algerian Football Federation also showed the words «Morocco 2024» erased from the official tournament logo, in yet another move that blatantly denies recognition of the host country.

Amir DZ Kidnapping: France Issues Terrorism Arrest Warrant for Algerian Diplomat

Rabat – A French judge has issued an international arrest warrant against Salaheddine Selloum, a former first secretary at the Algerian embassy in Paris, for his alleged role in a terrorist conspiracy linked to the kidnapping of Amir Boukhors, known as Amir DZ, an Algerian YouTuber and political refugee in France. Amir DZ was abducted in April 2024 in Val-de-Marne, near Paris. French authorities accuse Selloum of participating in the unlawful arrest, detention, and kidnapping of the influencer. The French national anti-terrorism prosecutor requested the arrest warrant due to 'serious suspicions' of Selloum's involvement in these crimes, Le Monde reported . The judge issued the international warrant on July 25, aiming to prevent impunity for Algerian agents suspected of serious offenses. Selloum served as first secretary at the Algerian embassy in Paris between 2021 and 2024. Algerian activist and journalist Oualid Kebir described the arrest warrant as a 'serious and unprecedented judicial and political development.' 'The case is one of the most sensitive issues in the relations between Paris and Algeria,' Kebir added. This development adds to the already tense relations between France and Algeria. Earlier this week, French President Emmanuel Macron sent a letter to Algerian Prime Minister François Bayrou urging the government to act with 'greater firmness and determination' against Algeria and its authorities. 'The Algerian authorities have made the deliberate choice not to respond to our repeated calls over recent months to work together in the interest of our two nations,' reads the letter. Emmanuel cited Algeria's failure to honor agreements, particularly regarding the return of deported nationals, as well as the case of imprisoned French-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal. Following this, France suspended a visa exemption deal for Algerian diplomats and tightened visa rules, which Algeria responded to by reinstating visa requirements for French officials. Errachidy Misses Weight, PFL Africa Debut Downgraded

Abderrahim Errachidy will make his Professional Fighters League Africa debut in Johannesburg on Saturday, but not as part of the featherweight tournament. The Moroccan was originally scheduled to face South Africa's Elbert Steyn in a first-round bout, but both men failed to make the 145lb limit at Friday's official weigh-in. They each registered 148lbs, with the contest now reclassified as a non-tournament catchweight showcase. It means Errachidy's first appearance under the PFL banner will be about making an impression rather than chasing points in the league's inaugural African season. Abderrahim Errachidy will make his Professional Fighters League Africa debut in Johannesburg in a catchweight showcase after both he and South Africa's Elbert Steyn failed to make the featherweight limit. PFL Africa, launched this year, mirrors the global promotion's trademark format: a win-and-advance tournament in which fighters earn points for victories and stoppages, with the eventual champions crowned after the play-offs. The Johannesburg event marks the continuation of the First Round following the season's opening in Cape Town last month. The Big Top Arena at Carnival City will also stage the featherweight main event between Nigeria's Patrick 'Starboi' Ocheme (144.6lbs) and Guinea's Mohamed 'Lamo Mohamed' Camara (145.6lbs), while the welterweight co-main features Angola's Shido Boris 'Machine' Esperanca (170.6lbs) against Ibrahima 'Freezer' Mané (170.6lbs) of Gambia. Elsewhere on the card, British Boloyoang (170lbs) meets Octave Ayinda (169.8lbs), Sanon Sadeck (170.2lbs) faces Yabna N'tchala (168.4lbs) and Osvaldo Benedito (168lbs) takes on Emilios Dassi (169.6lbs) in further welterweight contests. Featherweight bouts pit Wasi Adeshina (145.8lbs) against Jean Jacques Lubaya (144.6lbs) and Wilker Nsamo (144.8lbs) against Dwight Joseph (145.2lbs). Abdoul Razac Sankara (146lbs) meets Shadrack Yemba (146lbs) in a tournament bout that replaces the withdrawn Errachidy–Steyn fixture, while Desmond Tamungang (168.2lbs) faces Kunle Lawal (170.4lbs) in a welterweight alternate contest. Violence in Torre-Pacheco : Pedro Sanchez and Morocco condemn racism and call for calm

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has responded to the recent violence targeting the Moroccan community in Torre-Pacheco, near Murcia, which erupted last Wednesday. In a tweet, he declared: «Racism is incompatible with democracy. What is happening in Torre-Pacheco is a challenge for all of us». He added, «We must speak out, act firmly, and uphold the values that unite us. Spain is a country of rights, not hate». El racismo es incompatible con la democracia. Lo que estamos viendo en Torre-Pacheco nos interpela a todos. Debemos alzar la voz, actuar con firmeza y defender los valores que nos unen. España es un país de derechos, no de odio. — Pedro Sánchez (@sanchezcastejon) July 14, 2025 For its part, the Consulate General of Morocco in Murcia issued a statement saying it is closely monitoring «these unfortunate events marked by violence, incitement, and hatred against members of the Moroccan community living in the municipality of Torre-Pacheco». The consulate condemned the attacks in the strongest terms and expressed full solidarity with the community, while maintaining ongoing communication with Spanish authorities to ensure the necessary protection for those who are experiencing genuine fear and distress. The consulate also praised «the considerable efforts made by security forces and other local authorities to contain the crisis and restore calm», while urging members of the Moroccan community to exercise restraint and follow instructions from local authorities during these difficult times. The Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad (CCME) also reacted via a tweet on X (formerly Twitter), condemning «all forms of violence, racism, and stigmatization». It stressed that «mutual respect, human dignity, and social cohesion must remain the fundamental principles uniting our communities». — Conseil de la communauté marocaine à l'étranger (@CCMEOfficiel) July 14, 2025 Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska directly blamed the far-right Vox party, stating that «organized groups» were behind the unrest. He criticized Vox's rhetoric around «criminal immigration», describing it as an incitement to «illegal behavior and calls to action». The minister emphasized that «there is no connection between crime and immigration». Pedro Ángel Roca, the mayor of Torre-Pacheco, said on public broadcaster TVE that the situation has been «under control» since Sunday evening thanks to increased security reinforcements. He stressed the need to tackle crime in all its forms but warned of the risks posed by extremist groups from outside the city attempting to exploit the situation. According to authorities, several far-right groups were involved in the disturbances, including one called «Expel Them Now», which used Telegram to call for Moroccans to be driven out of town. The violence erupted last Wednesday after the circulation of a video showing an elderly man being violently attacked by three young men of North African origin, according to the victim's own account to local media. The footage sparked outrage, which far-right groups—both local and external—used to organize anti-immigrant rallies targeting people of Maghrebi origin. — Mariola Guevara Cava (@mariolaguevara) July 14, 2025 Mariola Guevara, the central government's delegate in the Murcia region, announced Monday via X that «ten people have been arrested so far». Among those arrested were two undocumented young Moroccan men, aged 21 and 22, who were allegedly present during the assault on the elderly man. They are being prosecuted for complicity and failure to assist a person in danger. The main perpetrator, a 19-year-old Moroccan man with legal residency, was arrested while attempting to flee to France through the town of Rentería. He has been placed in pretrial detention and faces charges of aggravated assault.
