The decision for the extension was taken at the meeting on Monday after a high-powered committee, comprising Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna, and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi failed to reach a consensus.
'The appointments committee of the cabinet, based on the recommendations of the committee, has approved the extension in tenure of Praveen Sood, as director CBI for a period of one year beyond April 24, 2025,' the order issued on Wednesday said.
The extension is a departure from norm, as the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) Act mandates a fixed tenure of two-years for directors of CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED).
In November 2021, the government brought in an ordinance to amend the Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) Act as well as the Delhi Special Police Establishment (DSPE) Act to empower it to give three one-year extensions to ED chiefs and the CBI directors if it so desires. The ordinance was subsequently passed by Parliament a month later.
Previously, the ordinance was used to give three back-to-back extensions to former ED director Sanjay Kumar Mishra.
Sood, a 1986-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer of the Karnataka cadre, was appointed as 34th director of CBI on May 25, 2023. Before his CBI stint, Sood was the director general of police (DGP) in Karnataka.
During his tenure, CBI has successfully investigated and finalized several sensitive cases including NEET-UG paper leak, RG Kar hospital rape and murder, cash-for-jobs irregularities involving former railways minister Lalu Prasad Yadav and his family, Delhi excise policy 2021-22 related irregularities in which former chief minister Arvind Kejriwal and deputy CM Manish Sisodia were arrested.
Under Sood, the agency also filed a record number of closure reports, officials said.
For instance, in 2024, CBI filed closure report in at least 174 cases for lack of evidence. Prior to 2024, CBI's closure reports ranged between 30 and 60 cases every year, including 62 in 2023 and 32 in 2022.
Some prominent cases closed last year include a 2017 probe against Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Praful Patel (now with NCP-SP) for alleged irregularities in the leasing of aircraft by National Aviation Corporation of India Ltd (NACIL); a 2017 probe against former Union environment minister Jayanthi Natarajan over diversion of forest land for a steel plant in Jharkhand; a 2017 case against NDTV founders Prannoy and Radhika Roy for allegedly causing a loss of ₹ 48 crore to ICICI Bank; and a 2022 case of betting in Indian Premier League's 2019 season.
'The director (Sood) directed all units of the agency last year to scavenge the cases that needed winding up and finalise them at the earliest — by either filing charge sheet(s) or closure report(s). This resulted in the agency disposing of a record 1,467 cases (1,293 charge sheets and 174 closure reports) in 2024,' said an officer, who asked not to be named.
Known for his hands-on approach, Sood had supervised investigation of high-profile cases involving high net-worth individuals and matters having inter-state and international ramifications.

Lokpal seeks CBI, ED officers to join its inquiry wing
The Lokpal has sought applications from officers with experience in working with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) to join its inquiry wing on deputation. The applications have been invited for filling up of various posts i.e., deputy director (DD)/superintendent of police (SP), inquiry/investigation officer, assistant inquiry/investigation officer and personal assistant in the inquiry wing of Lokpal of India on a deputation basis, according to an official circular. The Lokpal and Lokayuktas Act, 2013, came into force on January 1, 2014, when it received the assent of the President. However, it began functioning only on March 27, 2019, following the appointment of its chairperson and members. To discharge its statutory functions, Section 11 of the Act obligates the Lokpal to constitute an inquiry wing to conduct a preliminary inquiry into any offence punishable under the Prevention of Corruption Act , 1988, alleged to have been committed by the public servants and functionaries. On August 30, 2024, a full bench of Lokpal met and decided to constitute such an inquiry wing. Samosas in the spotlight: HC says RTI meant for governance, not snacks
The Bombay High Court was recently told that the Maharashtra State Information Commission (SIC) received a strange RTI application asking how many samosas are served daily in a government office. The court expressed concern over such frivolous uses of the Right to Information (RTI) Act, saying laws meant for the public good are being misused. "People use them to look for sons-in-law or track government employees. It's a paradox," remarked Chief Justice Alok Aradhe and Justice Sandeep Marne. The court was hearing a public interest litigation (PIL) filed by former Chief Information Commissioner Shailesh Gandhi and five RTI activists. They wanted the SIC to be directed to clear second appeals and complaints within 45 days of being filed. In response, SIC said the delays are due to staff shortages. The state government's lawyer, Jyoti Chavan, informed the court that there are eight sanctioned posts—seven commissioners and one chief—but only four of them were filled recently. The petitioners asked for three more commissioners, pointing out that around 1 lakh appeals and complaints are still pending. Two Surat textile workers ‘stripped, beaten on suspicion of theft'; 2 traders arrested
Two textile workers were allegedly stripped, assaulted with sticks, and paraded nude in a market passage in Surat's Anmol Textile Market on Tuesday, after being suspected of theft by a group of traders. A purported video of the incident went viral on Thursday, prompting police action. Two traders have been arrested, and police said one is absconding. The alleged incident took place on the second floor of the Anmol Textile Market, located on Ring Road. According to the complaint filed by one of the workers, Jitu Vagh (23), he and his friend Pradeep Morey were 'talking' near shop number 213—Dholisati Textiles—on Tuesday afternoon when a group of traders confronted them. The FIR alleges that three traders identified as Vaibhav Bhalotiya, Nitish Ketiya, and Ravi Jaipuriya questioned the two workers about their presence near the saree parcels outside the shop, accused them of theft, and then forcibly took them inside the premises. Inside the shop, the workers were allegedly stripped and beaten with wooden sticks. 'They made us parade naked in the passage in front of the public. We were kept standing nude for an hour until other traders intervened and rescued us,' Vagh alleged in his complaint. He added that someone on the way gave them clothes. Vagh, who sought medical attention at a private clinic, was reportedly found to have sustained fractures in his left hand and leg. The Salabatpura police registered the complaint late Wednesday night and invoked multiple charges under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Sections 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), 117(2) (voluntarily causing grievous hurt), 127(2) (wrongful confinement), 352 (provocation to breach of peace), 351(3) (criminal intimidation with specific threats), and 54 (abettor present at the crime scene), as well as provisions under the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act — Sections 3(1)(c), 3(1)(d), and 3(2)(v-a). The police have arrested Vaibhav Bhalotiya and Nitesh Ketiya. A search is on for Ravi Jaipuriya and others involved. CCTV footage from the shop and surrounding area has been seized, and market officials have been questioned, officials said. Speaking to The Indian Express, Surat Deputy Commissioner of Police (D Division) Chirag Patel said: 'How the two textile labourers were beaten up is inhuman and unacceptable… We are also investigating whether any theft took place, but taking the law into one's own hands will not be tolerated. I urge all traders to approach the police in such cases.' Federation of Surat Textile Traders Association president Kailash Hakim also condemned the incident. 'After the video went viral, we found that the two workers were allegedly caught stealing sarees. But even if that were the case, the traders had no right to strip, beat, or parade them. They should have handed them over to the police,' he said.
