
One-of-a-kind Bay Area barbecue spot opens S.F. location
Fikscue, which has created a sensation in Alameda by bringing together Indonesian dishes and Texas-style barbecue, is finally opening its anticipated San Francisco location.
Owners Fik and Rekah Saleh announced on Instagram that their new location at Chase Center's Thrive City plaza on Thursday. Expect the halal smoked brisket and 'dino' ribs by the pound and in dishes like rendang plates and soto padang soup bowls which have commanded hours-long lines.
'Come through and celebrate the grand opening of our second location,' the announcement reads. 'We're fired up and ready to serve you!'
The Salehs were not immediately available for comment.
Plans for the location, first revealed last summer, include its own indoor seating area — in contrast to the Alameda location, which includes no seating — and a shared outdoor seating area with Harmonic brewing. The menu may vary slightly from the couple's first location.
The restaurant originally began as a fusion of the Saleh's separate food projects, Fik's Texas-style Barbecue and Rekah's indonesian cooking project Gurih Table. They opened their Alameda brick-and-mortar in late 2023. Chronicle restaurant critic Cesar Hernandez has praised Fikscue's rendang plate, which brings together the traditional coconut milk and spices stew with chunks of brisket tossed in, along with Indonesian sides like coconut curry and a sambal egg.
'The product speaks for itself, and it shows a tangible hunger for something new,' Hernandez wrote. 'I was constantly impressed by the way the restaurant skillfully stacked flavors.'

Veteran, Jeopardy winner and the first Indian American elected to Frisco City Council
He's a military veteran, a game show winner and now the first Indian American elected to Frisco's city council. Whether it was joining the Navy only months before 9/11 or winning the very last episode of Jeopardy hosted by Alex Trebek, Burt Thakur's life seems to involve a lot of fateful timing. "The one thing that a lot of people got anchored to was that my story was the quintessential American dream," said Thakur. "And as somebody who immigrated here, I learned how to speak English by watching Alex Trebek." Thakur shared that emotional story and became part of game show history. Five years later, the time was right for the 42-year-old engineer to make political history in Frisco. He pulled off an upset on Saturday by beating an incumbent to earn a seat on the city council. "[I] 100% expected to win," Thakur said. "I mean, our campaign did so much work. We knocked on thousands of doors. I think one of the coolest things about the campaign was I had never sent out an attack ad." Thakur is also the first Indian American to get elected to public office in Frisco, a community that makes up 15% of the city's population. "Well, I'll tell you what, I'm confident that my win energized the Indian American community for sure," Thakur said. "I think it not just energized the Indian community, but a lot of our community got energized. I think we had some of the highest turnouts in Frisco races in the last couple of years, but specifically for the Indian community." Thakur believes Frisco voters from all backgrounds voted for him because he wants the city to focus more on meeting the needs of its residents rather than trying to appeal to visitors. "Understanding that we are a city of almost 250,000 people and we don't have an animal shelter," said Thakur. "We don't have a VA clinic. We have 8 to 10,000 kids here who have autism and severe learning disabilities, and parents don't have relief. And conversely, we have a large geriatric population that doesn't have an adult or geriatric care facility. And at the same time, driving down the road, I lose my cell phone signal." As for his political future, Thakur wants to prove to others and himself that he can succeed in city government first. "I don't think my wife wants me to run for office right now," he said. "Can we have that conversation in like in the last year? Because maybe I'll suck, you know, I don't know. Hey, I'm being serious. You know, I don't know if I'm going to be good. I want to be good ... I want the whole my whole job is to make sure that people now can dream bigger, that they have somebody who's an advocate for them to pursue their highest excellence. I say, what's wrong? What's wrong with thinking big?"

Southern California Pastrami Favorite Finally Expands to Las Vegas
Southern California's beloved pastrami destination, the Hat, is finally moving forward with plans to open in Las Vegas — six years after the chain announced it would expand to Southern Nevada. Construction is now underway on a 4,122-square-foot restaurant at 6239 South Rainbow Boulevard — the same space it staked out in 2019 — with a drive-thru and outdoor patio. The Hat has been a California staple since 1951, serving pastrami dips poised for dunking into homemade au jus, plus burgers, turkey sandwiches, and onion rings. Canadian Asian grocery chain T&T Supermarket continues expansion in SoCal
Canada's largest Asian grocery chain is opening its second store in Southern California and the fourth in the state in Chino Hills. The T&T Supermarket will open in the Los Angeles suburb in the fall of 2026 and offer an assortment of Asian snacks, fresh produce and live seafood, according to a statement. The grocer is popular in Canada for Asian street food and a variety of hot food cooked on site. T&T Supermarket operates more than 38 stores in Vancouver, Toronto and other Canadian cities. The first U.S. location opened in Bellevue, Wash., in December 2024, and the company also has plans to open stores in Irvine, San Francisco and San Jose by the end of next year. The 61,000-square-foot Chino Hills store will be situated in the Crossroads Marketplace mall among Costco and PetSmart, and will be the chain's largest location in California. 'Chino Hills is a wonderful community to live, and we can't wait to add to the local food scene," said T&T Chief Executive Tina Lee in a statement. "We're transforming two vacant retail spaces, a former Best Buy and Bed Bath & Beyond, into one big food destination." The store will create 350 jobs for the local community and offer unique products including Taiwanese-style rice rolls and Chinese crepes, the company said. T&T Supermarket first opened in British Columbia in 1993 and is currently run by the founder's daughter, Lee, who took over in 2014. Canadian retailer Loblaw Companies acquired the chain in 2009, though it is operated as an independent subsidiary.
