Chelsea legend Terry backs small-side football
PETALING JAYA: Chelsea legend John Terry has thrown his support behind the rising wave of five-a-side and seven-a-side football tournaments that blend social media influencers, streamers, and former professionals, calling it a refreshing evolution in the global football landscape.
Speaking before the start of the Liga 7x7 All-Stars tournament at the Cheras Football Stadium yesterday, Terry praised the growing trend that has gripped fans and players alike around the world.
"First of all, it's a great concept. We're doing something very similar back home, called the Ballers League,' said the former England international.
"Speaking to Adam (founder of the league Adam Azman) and the guys here organising it, the format works. Hopefully, this is the start of something we can come back to annually and keep building on. It's a great idea."
With small pitches and modified rules, the format caters not just to up-and-coming talent but also to former players like Terry, who still relish the competitive edge without the physical toll of the 11-a-side game.
"The pitch is quite small, which is nice for us older players,' he joked.
"So yeah, I'm looking forward to it."
Beyond the appeal to retired professionals, Terry was particularly enthusiastic about how the inclusion of digital creators has transformed how fans engage with the sport.
"This format and this style of football are very exciting. The game's changed over the last 10 years - it's slower than when we played - but the eyes we can get on it now with streamers, YouTubers, and social media influencers is massive.
"A mix of ex-footballers and influencers works. The events are getting big followings and that helps to grow the game differently."
Turning his attention to his beloved Chelsea, Terry expressed optimism about the club's direction heading into the 2025-2026 season, especially after the team's triumph at the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.
"Well, I think it's exciting. The club have a lot of players at the moment and I'm sure there's going to be some movement in the market still,' he noted.
"But listen, it's good to go and win the Club World Cup over in America. That bodes well for the season."
Terry, who captained Chelsea through one of their most successful eras, emphasised the importance of regrouping ahead of the Premier League restart.
"Hopefully the players can get some rest now and come back ready to go again. As a Chelsea ex-player and a Chelsea fan, it's an exciting time to be a Chelsea supporter."

LONDON: Liverpool have agreed to sign Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike in a deal worth an initial £69 million (US$92 million), according to reports on Monday. The Premier League champions switched their focus to Ekitike following Newcastle's refusal to sell Sweden striker Alexander Isak, who is valued at around £150 million by the Magpies. Newcastle and Manchester United were also interested in Ekitike, but Liverpool look set to win the race for one of Europe's hottest young stars. Arteta coy on Gyokeres, but says 'a lot of time left' for transfers
SINGAPORE: Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was reluctant to talk Monday about transfer target Viktor Gyokeres, but said there was "a lot of time left in the window" to strengthen his squad. "He's not part of our group yet," Arteta told reporters in Singapore of Sporting Lisbon's Swedish striker ahead of pre-season friendlies against AC Milan and Newcastle United this week. "And I don't have anything concrete to offer to any player who is not part of the group yet," he added. English Premier League Arsenal have so far signed Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea, Christian Norgaard from Brentford, Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad and, most recently, Noni Madueke from Chelsea. Arteta is still looking to beef up his attacking options, with Arsenal reportedly offering a deal worth £70 million ($94 million) for the prolific Gyokeres, who scored 54 goals in 52 games in Portugal last season. "There's still a lot of time in the transfer window, and we are still seeking the numbers," said Arteta "We are short, and we have to improve the depth and quality of the squad. Arteta backs Arsenal's handling of Partey departure
SINGAPORE: Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta on Monday defended the club's handling of Thomas Partey's departure after the Ghana international midfielder was arrested on suspicion of rape and sexual assault. Arsenal did not offer the 32-year-old a new contract at the end of last season and days later he was charged by British police with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault between 2021 and 2022. Partey is due to appear before magistrates in London on August 5. In a statement released on July 4, the day Partey was arrested, Arsenal said: "The player's contract ended on June 30. Due to ongoing legal proceedings the club is unable to comment on the case." Arteta was asked during Arsenal's pre-season tour of Singapore whether the allegations against Partey were the deciding factor in him being released. The Spaniard said he was "100 per cent" convinced that Arsenal had followed the correct procedure, adding: "The club was very clear in its statement. There are a lot of legal matters that are very complicated so I cannot comment on any of that." Partey joined Arsenal for £45 million from Atletico Madrid in October 2020. He appeared 35 times in the Premier League last season, scoring four goals, and 12 times in the Champions League. - AFP
