Arteta coy on Gyokeres, but says 'a lot of time left' for transfers

SINGAPORE: Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta was reluctant to talk Monday about transfer target Viktor Gyokeres, but said there was "a lot of time left in the window" to strengthen his squad.
"He's not part of our group yet," Arteta told reporters in Singapore of Sporting Lisbon's Swedish striker ahead of pre-season friendlies against AC Milan and Newcastle United this week.
"And I don't have anything concrete to offer to any player who is not part of the group yet," he added.
English Premier League Arsenal have so far signed Kepa Arrizabalaga from Chelsea, Christian Norgaard from Brentford, Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad and, most recently, Noni Madueke from Chelsea.
Arteta is still looking to beef up his attacking options, with Arsenal reportedly offering a deal worth £70 million ($94 million) for the prolific Gyokeres, who scored 54 goals in 52 games in Portugal last season.
"There's still a lot of time in the transfer window, and we are still seeking the numbers," said Arteta
"We are short, and we have to improve the depth and quality of the squad.
"But for now, I'm focusing on the players we already have, and I'm very pleased with what I've seen so far."
Arteta is acutely aware that Arsenal have not won the Premier League since 2004 and that his squad need to go one better after finishing second in each of the past three seasons.
"I don't have to convince (the players) about winning the Premier League. I know how good they are, and we all want to take the next step," said Arteta.
"Our job is to put ourselves in the best competitive position to achieve our goal. That's our individual responsibility," he added.

Liverpool beaten 4-2 by AC Milan in Hong Kong pre-season friendly

HONG KONG: Former Chelsea midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek scored as Premier League champions Liverpool were beaten 4-2 by AC Milan today in a pre-season friendly in Hong Kong. Liverpool, with record signing Florian Wirtz making his first start, dominated possession under the closed roof at Kai Tak Stadium but a shaky defence was punished for all four Milan goals. Rafael Leao opened the scoring for the Italian side on 10 minutes with Dominik Szoboszlai's superb strike equalising 16 minutes later to make it 1-1 at half-time But Loftus-Cheek, six minutes after the break, and two goals from substitute Noah Okafor, either side of Cody Gakpo's late header, gave AC Milan the victory. Liverpool's Hong Kong fans vastly outnumbered those supporting AC Milan in the 49,704 sellout crowd. They paid a heartfelt tribute to Diogo Jota, who passed away earlier this month in a car crash. Flowers were laid by Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish in front of fans, who responded by holding up a mosaic spelling out "DJ20" in honour of Jota's number 20 shirt, which has been retired by the club. Leao, too, remembered his fellow Portuguese player Jota as he offered a silent prayer and formed the number 20 with his fingers after scoring the opener. Wirtz played 45 minutes and looked comfortable directing operations, showing hints of why Bayer Leverkusen were paid a reported British transfer record US$150 million (RM633 million) for the German playmaker. Other new Liverpool signings left-back Milos Kerkez and right-back Jeremie Frimpong both came on as substitutes at half-time. But Striker Hugo Ekitike, who was signed from Entracht Frankfurt for a reported US$92 million, was not ready to take part, having only flown in to join his new teammates two days earlier. Liverpool started without a recognised central striker as Darwin Nunez and Luis Diaz, who have both been linked to move away from Anfield, were left out of the matchday squad. Liverpool will now fly to Japan to face Yokohama F-Marinos on Wednesday.

Liverpool to remember Jota with permanent tribute

LIVERPOOL are to create a permanent tribute to remember former player Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva who died in a car crash earlier this month, the Premier League champions announced on Saturday. Father of three Jota died alongside his brother on July 3, 11 days after marrying his long-term partner Rute Cardoso, after their car came off the road and burst into flames in northern Spain. A large number of tributes in the shape of flowers, scarves, cards and jerseys have been left at Anfield which Liverpool said would form the basis for the permanent monument. 'The thousands of physical tributes outside Anfield have been gradually removed over the course of the last week and carefully separated and safely stored,' the club said in a statement. 'Floral tributes will then be composted and used in flower beds across all club sites. 'The remaining artefacts will be recycled by a specialist company and used to help create a permanent memorial sculpture that will become a future focal point of remembrance at Anfield.' The club also said that players will have a 'Forever 20' emblem - referencing Jota's now-retired shirt number - printed on their shirts and stadium jackets for the season. Liverpool paid tribute to Jota and Silva during their friendly at Preston a fortnight ago and will hold their main commemoration, which will feature a fan mosaic and a minute of silence, before they kick off the new season at home to Bournemouth on August 15. - AFP

‘Forever 20': Liverpool to commemorate Diogo Jota with fan mosaic, memorial sculpture and shirt patch

LONDON, July 26 — Liverpool players will wear a 'Forever 20' emblem on their shirts and stadium jackets this Premier League season in memory of their former forward Diogo Jota who died in a car crash in Spain three weeks ago. The club also announced today a special commemoration including a fan mosaic and a minute's silence ahead of Liverpool's opening game of the season against Bournemouth on August 15. Thousands of flowers, scarves, banners and other tributes have been laid outside Anfield since Jota and his brother Andre Silva died. The remaining artefacts will be recycled and used to create a permanent memorial sculpture that will become a focal point of remembrance at Anfield. Liverpool had already announced after consultation with Jota's family that his number 20 shirt will be retired across all levels of the club, including the women's and academy teams. Supporters can have 'Diogo J. 20' printed on shirts in club stores, with profits going to LFC Foundation, the club's official charity. The Foundation has committed to creating a grassroots football programme in Jota's name. A floral tribute will be also laid before kickoff at pre-season games in Hong Kong, Tokyo and at Anfield. — Reuters
