Off the cuff: Pollachi verdict sparks political war as DMK, AIADMK trade sexual assault blame
Last week, the Pollachi sexual assault verdict finally dropped, and as expected, the DMK wasted no time reminding the public that the horrors unfolded under AIADMK's watch. Political popcorn it is. Not to be outdone, the Arakkonam AIADMK rushed to flip the narrative. Their weapon? A domestic violence case involving Deivaseyal, a DMK youth wing member, accused of threatening a college girl to 'engage sexually' with party men. The girl's complaint even mentioned 20 other women allegedly facing similar exploitation. The police, however, called it a 'family issue.' Turns out, Deivaseyal had allegedly married (and deceived) multiple women. Not 20. Not even close. But the AIADMK didn't wait for fact-checks. They took the girl to the streets in protest—literally. She missed her college exam that day. Noble sacrifice or political stunt? Ironically, not even the Arakkonam AIADMK cadres showed up for their own show. Let's be clear: victim blaming is vile. But so is victim branding and weaponising a woman's trauma, just to score a few brownie points on election eve.

Calculated goof-up?
The state recently dropped a press release in the tone of an Oscar-winning reveal: Adi Dravidar and Tribal Welfare schools scored a record 96% in Class 12. 'A first in 60 years,' they beamed. Cue the confetti cannons. But, hold the applause. The math was even more puzzling than Schrodinger's cat. Tribal Welfare schools recorded 95.5% pass, while Adi Dravidar Welfare schools stood at 91.85%, with the latter having over three times the number of students than the former. Unless someone bribed the calculator with extra marks, this round-up is a bit exaggerated.

Submit action plan to verify correctness of property tax assessments: HC
Madurai: Madras high court on Wednesday directed the Madurai district collector to coordinate with the city corporation commissioner to work out an effective modality for surveying properties, and submit an action plan to verify the correctness of property tax assessments of all buildings in Madurai city. As asked by the court on Tuesday, the corporation commissioner filed a report on Wednesday, stating that there are nearly 3,49,741 property tax assessments within the corporation limits. Pursuant to the court's order, a committee/team with 11 officials was constituted under the deputy commissioner (revenue) of the corporation to ascertain whether any irregularity or under-assessment was made. The team would carry out inspections regarding the assessment, and if any irregularities are found, necessary actions would be taken, stated the corporation commissioner. A division bench of Justice S M Subramaniam and Justice G Arul Murugan observed that details about the action plan were not mentioned in the report. They said an action plan would be helpful for finding out illegalities or under-assessment in the matter of property tax. Hence, the judges directed the district collector to coordinate with the corporation commissioner to work out an effective modality for conducting field inspections, surveying properties, and verifying the correctness of property tax assessments. If necessary, the assistance of deputy tahsildars could be availed to constitute sub-committees in all five zones of the corporation. The judge directed the district collector and corporation commissioner to submit an effective action plan regarding the property tax assessments for the court to ensure that the efforts are taken in a fruitful manner. The judges also made it clear that the special investigation team (SIT) headed by DIG, Madurai range, Abhinav Kumar, should continue investigation into the scam independently. The hearing in the case was adjourned to Aug 26. The court passed the order while hearing a public interest litigation filed by AIADMK councillor T Ravi, of ward 83, stating that a huge scam in the assessment of property tax in the corporation came to light in 2024. He alleged that several corporation officials, in connivance with zonal chairpersons, were involved, resulting in a loss of over Rs200 crore to the corporation. He stated that police had taken action only against low profile people and left out the real culprits who have political influence. During the earlier hearing, the court observed that a scam of this magnitude had to be investigated by an IPS officer, which should be monitored by higher authorities to ensure there are no lapses and no higher-level people are left out from the ambit of prosecution. Vaiko suspends Mallai Sathya for 'anti-party activities'
Chennai: MDMK general secretary Vaiko relieved party deputy general secretary Mallai Sathya from all responsibilities, accusing him of indulging in "anti-party activities". In a show cause notice issued under party bylaws to Sathya on Aug 17, Vaiko directed the senior functionary not to use the party flag and name and sought a reply within a fortnight. In the notice issued under Rule 35(6) of MDMK bylaws, Vaiko said Sathya's media interviews and speeches on internal party affairs amounted to violating party rules and tarnished its reputation. "Your activities undermine the interests of the party and are contrary to its policies and objectives," Vaiko said, directing Sathya to hand over records, assets, and responsibilities to the party general secretary immediately. Sathya must submit a written explanation within a fortnight, failing which, disciplinary action would be taken without further notice. Sathya distributed sweets to his supporters upon receiving the letter on Wednesday morning. He told reporters that he was ready to meet Vaiko and reply in person. "You are my mentor. You moulded me. Fix a date and place, I will come alone and answer," he said. Sathya also invited Vaiko to attend the 117th birth anniversary event of C N Annadurai in Kancheepuram, where a 'Dravida Ratna' award was planned for him. Sathya had contested unsuccessfully in Madurantakam assembly constituency in 2021, where he lost to AIADMK's Maragatham Kumaravel by 3,570 votes. EPS: Didn't DMK know CPR was from RSS when it allied with BJP?
Vellore: AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami questioned the stance of DMK MP Kanimozhi that the party will not support BJP-led NDA's vice president candidate C P Radhakrishnan as he belongs to RSS. At a meet at Walajah, Sholinghur, in Ranipet district, EPS asked, "Didn't DMK know that Radhakrishnan had an RSS background when it aligned with BJP earlier? Back then, Radhakrishnan contested as DMK alliance's candidate. When convenient, DMK changes its stand. In fact, DMK campaigned for Radhakrishnan and helped him win. Let them not forget that." EPS alleged that DMK will do anything to remain in power. "They (DMK) will even sign a bond of slavery. Even if they don't vote for C P Radhakrishnan, they must not speak ill of him. Shouldn't we feel proud that a Tamilian holds a high national post," he asked. The prices of rice, dal, oil, and groceries have all risen sharply, he said. "During AIADMK regime, we kept inflation under control. To check rising prices, we created a price stabilisation fund of 100crore. With this, we procured goods from neighbouring states where they were cheaper and supplied them through cooperative societies in TN," he said. Building materials have become so costly that the poor can no longer dream of building houses, said EPS, adding, "But DMK has no concern."
