Why an ESPN analyst believes 49ers QB Brock Purdy is a top-five NFL signal caller
Discourse about San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy has been revitalized after the final pick in the 2022 NFL draft inked a five-year, $265 million extension.
While the debate rages about Purdy's value, ESPN's Kevin Clark and Jeff Darlington in an episode of 'This is Football' laid out why the QB is actually one of the five best in the NFL.
Much of the Purdy discussion involves trying to put him in a vacuum and comparing him to other QBs in scenarios that live outside of reality. Clark made the case for Purdy as a top-five signal caller by placing him in the real world.
"Everybody always says, 'oh, was Brock Purdy a top 10 quarterback?'" Clark said. "And I say, 'I don't care, because Brock Purdy with Kyle Shanahan is a top-five quarterback."
The numbers back up Clark's assertion. Purdy's efficiency numbers have been excellent since he took over as the 49ers' starting QB, and the club is 23-13 in the regular season with him under center. They've also gone to two NFC championship games and a Super Bowl since Purdy became the starter late in the 2022 campaign.
It was clear via the stats why the 49ers wanted to stick with Purdy, but Darlington offered additional context for why the team (read: Shanahan) wanted to make him one of the 10 highest-paid QBs in the NFL.
"And I think that's what a lot of people forget a lot of the time, is that like, that's why Kyle latched on. He found his guy," Darlington said. "He found the guy who has the appropriate recall, the appropriate demeanor, the appropriate practice skill set. I think that in the NFL, again, I think that we don't put enough credence on a coach-QB relationship."
Whether Purdy is a consensus top-five QB among the general football commentariat matters less than whether he continues producing like a top-five QB. If he does, the 49ers have a real chance to win the Super Bowl thanks to their quarterback and the head coach's commitment to him.

Travis Kelce sends supporting message to Taylor Swift after surprise concert

The post Travis Kelce sends supporting message to Taylor Swift after surprise concert appeared first on ClutchPoints. Travis Kelce is sending Taylor Swift some love in his latest comment on Instagram. The official NFL Instagram account posted a photo of Swift with her guitar from her surprise performance at Kelce's Tight End University. 'Just a casual surprise performance at @te_university,' the NFL captioned the photo. The photo received a lot of love from fans, including her biggest one. 'Turn me up Tay Tay!!,' the Kansas City Chiefs tight end commented. 'Cry harder Dads, Brads and Chads,' one fan wrote referring to some of the men in the comments upset at Swift being posted on the NFL account. One Swiftie commented lyrics to the singer's 2010 hit 'Mean.' 'AND I CAN SEE YOU YEARS FROM NOW IN A BAR TALKING OVER A FOOTBALL GAME WITH THAT SAME BIG LOUD OPINION BUT NOBODYS LISTENING!!!! I LOVE U TAYLOR,' the fan wrote. 'Close enough… welcome back Eras Tour!' one fan joked in the comment section referring the singer's record-breaking tour. Taylor Swift gave attendees of Travis Kelce's Tight End University the surprise of a lifetime when Swift put on a surprise concert. The event took place in Nashville on Tuesday (June 24) where the singer has a special connection to. Swift owns two properties in Nashville: a penthouse in The Adelicia on Music Row and the Northumberland Estate in Forest Hills. However, her start in the city began when her parents moved to Hendersonville, Tennessee, when she was 14, to break into country music. 'See the one thing tight ends have in common with Nashville musicians,' she said on stage as seen in footage from the event, 'is we're all friends, right? We would like to dedicate this to our favorite players, who are going play, and these are the tight ends.' Country music star Kane Brown joined Swift on stage, which she jokingly shared was a spur-of-the-moment decision. 'We decided we were gonna perform that three minutes ago,' Taylor jokingly told the crowd. 'We're up there, me and Kane are having some drinks, and we were thinking like how loud could this place get?' Theoretically, how loud could the singing get in here?' She added, 'And I was like, 'I'd go up but I don't have a guitar.'' Chase Rice then offered the 'Cruel Summer' singer to use his. Swift performed her Grammy-nominated hit with Brown, 'Shake It Off.' This is the first performance from Swift since the end of her Eras Tour last December. The tour began March 17, 2023 and ended December 8, the end of the tour, she completed 152 stops across the nation and oversees in London, Paris, Sydney, and more. 'This is the most fun, joyful, exciting, intense, powerful and wonderful tour I have ever done, and that's all because of the way that you have treated it,' Swift is heard in a fan video via X. She thanked her fans for their continued support and for showing out for each concert. 'There's a reason why this is my longest tour I've ever done. I've never played this many shows on a tour before, and it's just cause I really never wanted it to end, because you guys have made it into such a wonderful experience for all of us on stage,' she continued. While it's rumored that Swift will go on tour in 2026, it has not been confirmed. Robert Whittaker: I don't see where Charles Oliveira wins fight vs. 'weapon' Ilia Topuria

Robert Whittaker doesn't like Charles Oliveira's chances vs. Ilia Topuria at UFC 317. Oliveira (35-10 MMA, 23-10 UFC) meets Topuria (16-0 MMA, 8-0 UFC) for the vacant lightweight title in Saturday's main event (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+) at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Although Oliveira is visibly the bigger fighter, Whittaker doesn't see weight playing a factor in this fight. "Obviously, Charles Oliveira is a weapon of a fighter," Whittaker said on his MMArcade Podcast. "I'm a big fan of his. Big fan of Ilia as well, but I love Charles. Who doesn't? Who doesn't love the story that he has, the heart? He used to be such a quitter in those early days of the UFC and he just stopped quitting. He found something in him and came back with a vengeance all the way to the title to become champion. "Ilia's a different beast. I think that a lot of support that's going toward Charles winning this fight comes from the fact that we don't know what Ilia is going to look like moving up. I've seen a lot of photos circulating of Ilia next to (Raul Rosas Jr.), and when they're looking at size discrepancies, I don't think it's going to be a problem." Whittaker is highly impressed with Topuria's back-to-back knockout wins over Alexander Volkanovski and Max Holloway. He rates his skillset very highly. "Ilia is a weapon," Whittaker said. "What he did to (Alexander Volkanovski) and what he did to Max (Holloway), two of the best featherweights – Volk being the best featherweight to have ever done it – he starched two legends of the sport. That is unreal. Ilia's skill set is ridiculous. Charles is phenomenal, as well. He's super dangerous off his back. Ilia has the grappling to do it. Charles standing, very textbook – but gets hit a lot. Ilia loves scrapping, loves moving on the inside, loves slipping punches to land punches. He's so good at dirty boxing. I just don't see where Charles wins this fight against Ilia."

Bo Nix labeled a ‘promising prospect' ahead of 2025 NFL season

Bo Nix was always a pretty good quarterback in college with the Auburn Tigers, but he turned into a superstar when he transferred to the Oregon Ducks. In his final year in Eugene, he threw an unbelievable 45 touchdowns to just three interceptions, which cemented his place as a first-round draft pick. Although Nix was highly successful with the Ducks, his age and lack of elite traits were a deterrent for several teams and most NFL fans. However, the Denver Broncos selected him with the No. 12 pick, and he won over the respect of a lot of people in his rookie season. Despite a frustrating beginning to his career, which saw him throw four interceptions over his first two games, Nix settled in and threw 29 touchdowns to eight interceptions in the final 14 games. His stellar play earned the Broncos their first playoff berth since they won the Super Bowl nearly a decade ago. The former Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Year and Heisman finalist now has sky-high expectations for his sophomore season and is viewed in a much brighter light than before. Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports ranked every starting NFL quarterback by tiers ahead of the 2025 season, and Nix was placed under the 'Promising Prospects' tier. "The seasoned Oregon product quietly approached 30 passing scores in Year 1 under Sean Payton, while excelling as a play-extender with his legs," Benjamin wrote. "The question is, can he make a leap with the Denver Broncos' pass weapons, and/or better manage the ball as Payton leans deeper into the ground game and defense?" It's a little too early to consider the second-year man a star, but Benjamin believes he is well on his way. Denver has added more playmakers for Nix to use this season, so all signs point to him building on his rookie year with the Broncos and establishing himself as one of the top passers in a loaded AFC West.
