RANGERS STUMBLED to a 1-1 draw at Motherwell in their opening game of the Scottish Premiership season on Saturday, as Russell Martin's men conceded a late equaliser at Fir Park.
The Glasgow giants, who secured a place in the third round of Champions League qualifying earlier this week, could not give new manager Martin a winning start to the league campaign.
James Tavernier put Rangers into a 14th-minute lead before Motherwell started to create chances.

Euro round-up: Rangers put three past Viktoria Plzen

Russell Martin's bold team selection paid off as Rangers battered Viktoria Plzen 3-0 in the first leg of their Champions League third qualifier at Ibrox. The Gers boss hit out at some of his squad following their deflating 1-1 draw at Motherwell on Saturday, questioning mentality, egos and application, and captain James Tavernier and midfielder Nicolas Raskin were the biggest names among the expected changes. Martin got the required reaction as winger Djeidi Gassama scored after 15 minutes with his third European goal in three ties before returning striker Cyriel Dessers added a second from the spot just before the interval. Gassama, signed this summer from Sheffield Wednesday, scored a third in the 51st minute to put the Govan side into a commanding lead and eventually a comfortable win. The Light Blues will be heavy favourites for the return game in the Czech Republic next Tuesday, with a play-off tie against Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg or Club Brugge of Belgium awaiting the winners. Elsewhere, in the Champions League qualifiers, Qarabag, who beat Shelbourne in the last round, enjoyed a 1-0 away win against KF Shkendija, while Dynamo Kyiv lost 1-0 at in Lublin against Cyprus side Pafos. Malmo and Copenhagen played out a scoreless draw in their first leg.

Liverpool youngster joins Lyon for €10 million

LIVERPOOL MIDFIELDER Tyler Morton has joined Ligue 1 club Lyon on a five-year contract, the French outfit announced on Tuesday. The 22-year-old arrives from the Premier League champions for a fee of €10 million. Advertisement 'Olympique Lyonnais announce the arrival of midfielder Tyler Morton from Liverpool. The English youth international has signed a five-year contract, which will run until June 30, 2030,' Lyon wrote in a statement on the club's website. Morton joined Liverpool's academy at the age of seven and signed his first professional contract with the Reds at the age of 17. He made 14 appearances for the first team and spent two loan periods in the English second division — at Blackburn and Hull. Capped 13 times at U21 level for England, Morton was a central figure as the team were crowned European champions in June. The defensive midfielder was responsible for setting up the winning goal in the final against Germany with a pinpoint cross onto the head of Jonathan Rowe. – © AFP 2025

Rangers move closer to Champions League qualification with convincing win

RANGERS TOOK a step closer to the Champions League proper by beating Czech side Viktoria Plzen 3-0 in their third round qualification first leg tie on Tuesday. A Djeidi Gassama brace on either side of a Cyriel Dessers spot-kick at Ibrox put Rangers firmly in control ahead of next week's return fixture in the Czech Republic. Advertisement The winners of the tie will face either Austria's Red Bull Salzburg or Belgium's Club Brugge in the play-off for a spot in the league phase. The two goalscorers on the night combined for the hosts' opener in the 15th minute as Dessers laid the ball off to Gassama before the Frenchman took a touch and finished coolly. Dessers then doubled Rangers' advantage on the stroke of half-time by sending the goalkeeper the wrong way from 12 yards after new signing Oliver Antman went down in the box under Matej Vydra's challenge. Gassama gave Rangers the cushion they desired six minutes after the interval as he nodded in his fourth goal in qualifying this campaign. Elsewhere, Swedes Malmö played out a goalless stalemate at home to Copenhagen. Wednesday's qualification ties will see Salzburg host Brugge, while Portugal's Benfica travel to Ligue 1 outfit Nice and Feyenoord of the Netherlands play Jose Mourinho's Fenerbahce. – © AFP 2025
