UAE-led diabetes research initiative embarks on space mission

SREENIVASA REDDY (ABU DHABI)In a milestone for the UAE's scientific aspirations, a pioneering healthcare research initiative has been launched into space aboard Axiom Space's Ax-4 mission, which took off from Kennedy Space Centre in Florida after several delays. Central to the mission is Suite Ride, a novel research effort developed in partnership between Abu Dhabi-based Burjeel Holdings and Axiom Space, aiming to redefine the potential of space travel for individuals living with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM)—a condition previously seen as incompatible with spaceflight.The Ax-4 mission has now set course for the International Space Station (ISS), where its four-member international crew will undertake 14 days of scientific work in microgravity. Their agenda includes conducting technology demonstrations and biomedical research that promise to advance knowledge across multiple fields.The Suite Ride study is designed to test the effectiveness of Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGMs)—now standard for diabetes management—under conditions of microgravity. These monitors will collect real-time glucose data throughout the mission, with comprehensive protocols spanning the preflight, inflight and postflight phases. In addition, the mission will examine how insulin behaves in space, evaluating its stability and potency after re-entry.Leading the scientific component of the project is Dr Mohammad Fityan, Chief Medical Officer at Burjeel Medical City and Clinical Lead for the Burjeel–Ax-4 Space Health Research. Working closely with Axiom Space's team, Dr Fityan will analyse CGM data to understand how these technologies perform in orbit, with the aim of translating the findings into practical healthcare solutions on Earth.'After months of preparation, we're excited to see our research project take flight aboard Ax-4. We're confident that the valuable insights gained will help improve healthcare access in underserved and hard-to-reach communities around the world, including in the MENA region,' said Dr Fityan.To commemorate the occasion, Burjeel Medical City is hosting a special exhibition highlighting the Suite Ride initiative, offering the UAE public and scientific circles an opportunity to engage with the broader implications of space health research. The UAE Embassy in Washington, D.C. also recently featured the project as a notable milestone in the country's growing role in human spaceflight.Globally, the Suite Ride mission is taking place against the backdrop of a steep rise in diabetes prevalence. The International Diabetes Federation projects 783 million cases by 2045, with the MENA region expected to see an 87% increase—underlining the urgent need for advanced remote healthcare technologies.
Commanded by NASA astronaut Peggy Whitson, the Ax-4 mission crew includes Mission Pilot Shubhanshu Shukla (India) and Mission Specialists Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski (ESA/Poland) and Tibor Kapu (Hungary). Collectively, they are set to conduct over 60 experiments sourced from 31 countries.

An Emirati couple from Al Mirfa'a in Abu Dhabi's Western Region drove more than three hours to the capital on Friday to take part in a community initiative – a journey made even more remarkable by the husband's story of recovery from paralysis. Seven years ago, Khalil Al Hosani suffered a stroke that left him paralysed from head to toe. Doctors told the former soldier and father of eight that his case was hopeless. For the next five years, he remained bedridden at home. Then, his wife, Fatima, decided she would not accept the prognosis. 'The treatment in the hospital was taking too long, so I brought him home,' she said. 'I started taking him to the beach in Al Mirfa. I buried him in the sand for hours and massaged his muscles with the sand and sea water. Then I would clean him in the sea. Day after day, for months.' After just four to five months of this unconventional therapy, Khalil began to stand. 'I was enjoying watching him walk, run, and play like a child again,' she said, smiling. Today, the 60-year-old walks unaided, though the couple keep a wheelchair in the car 'for back-up' on long trips. He has also returned to one of his greatest passions – volunteering – which he has been involved in for over 22 years. The couple were among 450 volunteers at the 'Volunteer Emirates – Back to School' initiative, organised by Dubai Cares in partnership with Aldar, where they helped assemble school kits for children from low-income families. For Fatima, the task was deeply personal. 'I remembered when I used to pack my own children's school bags,' she said. 'I would put their sandwiches and juice, dress them, do the girls' hair, and send them on the bus. Today, I felt the same joy helping other children go to school.' Fatima never attended school herself, but learned to read and write at home alongside her children. 'That is why I want every child to have the chance to study,' she said. The couple's journey from Al Mirfa to Abu Dhabi is one they make gladly for voluntary work. 'Not just today – every day,' Khalil said. 'From the street to the market, in all fields, we help.' When asked why they keep coming back, Fatima's answer was simple: 'We have a team of two – me and my husband. Wherever there is a chance to do good, we will go.' For them, each volunteering opportunity is not just about helping others but about celebrating the life they fought so hard to reclaim. 'We thank God every day,' Khalil said. 'If you can stand, if you can walk, then you can give. And when you give, you are alive.'

An experimental blood test detected early-stage ovarian cancer in patients with vague symptoms that would likely be misdiagnosed using currently available methods, researchers said in a new report. There are no reliable blood tests for these patients, and existing invasive tests often miss early-stage ovarian tumours, the researchers wrote in Cancer Research Communications. Using machine learning tools, the researchers identified multiple biomarkers - from across a wide range of molecules and processes in the body - that could be combined into a single test that detects all sub-types of the disease, at all stages. Tested at a large medical centre on blood samples from nearly 400 women with possible symptoms of ovarian cancer, the test was 92 percent accurate at identifying those with any stage of ovarian cancer and 88 percent accurate at identifying those with Stage I or Stage II disease, according to the report. Oriana Papin-Zoghbi, chief executive officer of the company developing the new test -Denver, Colorado-based AOA Dx - said the findings show its potential to aid 'in making faster, more informed decisions for women who need urgent clarity during a challenging diagnostic process.' Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of cancer-related deaths among women, largely due to delays in diagnosis until after the disease has spread in the body, at which point it's harder to treat. More than 90 percent of patients with early-stage ovarian cancer experience symptoms that can be mistaken for benign conditions, such as bloating, abdominal pain, and digestive issues. WAM

With connections to nearly all healthcare facilities – including hospitals, clinics and pharmacies - in the Emirate, Malaffi now supports 53,476 authorised users, from doctors and nurses to allied health professionals across 3,072 healthcare facilities in Abu Dhabi. The platform's latest enhancements expand its capabilities with the addition of over 160,000 M42 Pharmacogenomics Reports, offering personalised insights into patients' genetic responses to medications to optimise treatment plans. Furthermore, new diagnostic test results across key specialities, such as Mental Health, Ophthalmology, Otolaryngology, and Respiratory Diagnostics, provide clinicians with deeper insights to elevate patient care. These advancements are complemented by features like the Radiology Image Exchange, allowing access to radiology images from over 60 facilities to all authorised clinical users, and the AI-powered Patient Risk Profile, which predicts risks for chronic conditions and acute events. Together, these innovations streamline workflows, enhance decision-making and support better healthcare outcomes. Dr. Noura Khamis Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the DoH, said, 'Malaffi's access to 3.5 billion medical records marks a pivotal milestone, reflecting the DoH's steadfast commitment to creating the world's most intelligent, patient-centric healthcare system.
