New Toxicator ride at Alton Towers closes on opening day after pipe bursts
Alton Towers' latest attraction, Toxicator, was forced to close on its opening day after a burst pipe caused a leak of brown liquid.
Visitors at the Staffordshire theme park have expressed frustration at the ride's closure with one calling it a 'nightmare day' which left his son 'so disappointed'.
Visitors claimed a 'brown liquid' was leaking near the entrance of the ride on Saturday but Alton Towers denied reports it was sewage and insisted it was a nearby burst pipe.
A spokesperson for Alton Towers said the incident was 'unrelated to the new ride' and confirmed that operations were suspended for about two hours.
'Due to an unexpected burst pipe near the ride, Toxicator briefly paused operation whilst our teams swiftly dealt with the issue.
'The ride and surrounding area are now fully re-open and welcoming guests,' a statement said.
Ben Keable, from Cheslyn Hay, Staffordshire, was visiting the park with his son when the ride shut on Saturday.
He told the PA news agency: 'We had been queuing for about 70 minutes and were about one or two cycles away from getting on.
'We were standing under the ride waiting when a steady trickle of water started flowing by our feet. We thought it was water from the ride above as water was dripping from the fountains on the ride.
'The steady flow became more of a puddle around our feet. There was an announcement that the ride was suffering a problem. We were then told to leave the ride with no offer to come back with a fast pass given we had waited 70 minutes.
'This was just a small part of a nightmare day at the park. My son was so disappointed.'
Mr Keable said a number of rides were closed throughout the day meaning they only managed five rides in 10 hours due to long queues.
Matthew Lancaster, 27, from Southport, Merseyside, was also visiting the park when the pipe burst.
He said: 'I'm an avid theme park goer and it was very unfortunate what happened. That definitely wasn't on the bucket list.'
The new ride, initially dubbed Project Ocean, stands at 78ft tall and is the only top spin ride in the world to be elevated above ground level.
Asked about suggestions the ride was also closed for a period on Sunday, Alton Towers said it was open and fully operational, with a 50-minute queue time.

Wayne Rooney and his wife Coleen took a step back from their working lives to enjoy a day out at Alton Towers with their two youngest sons to celebrate half-time. The former Plymouth Argyle manager is currently without a coaching position, but remains a popular pundit, most recently working with Gary Lineker and Co for the BBC 's coverage of the FA Cup final. Rooney was a genial presence in the punditry line-up, taking a joke from Lineker about his coaching career in good humour during Crystal Palace 's victory against Manchester City. Micah Richards had asked Rooney what he thought Oliver Glasner might discuss at half-time with his Eagles side 1-0 up - only for the former Match of the Day host to crack: 'His teams were never 1-0 up!' Rooney was quick to switch attention back to the game, but will no doubt be mulling his future in the dug-out ahead of next season. However, before the start of preparations for the 2025/26 campaign, Rooney was able to let loose with his family at the popular theme park. The influencer was also able to share her sense of 'relief' after Rebekah Vardy was ordered to pay her a £1.4million settlement following their years-long Wagatha Christie legal battle. Breaking her silence at the time, Coleen insisted that 'time and money should have been put to better use' in a scathing public message. She wrote: 'The ruling yesterday in my favour finally brings this claim to an end, it's a relief and brings closure for my family and I. 'Throughout this long process, I am grateful that the judgements have consistently gone my way. 'However, as I have always maintained this claim did not need to be made or run for as long as it did. Iconic theme park ride shuts for good - and fans are left 'devastated'
A popular ride at Alton Towers theme park has finally closed for good in a move that has left some of its most passionate fans 'devastated'. The theme park's Postman Pat Parcel Post ride replaced the former Old MacDonald's Tractor Ride in May 2014. But the ride, located within Alton Towers' Cbeebies Land, has now closed to the public after being open for more than 10 years. Cbeebies Land is the park's kid-themed area with rides featuring characters from the Heeler Family, Bluey and the Octonauts. An Alton Towers spokesperson told the Stoke Sentinel: 'As we continually look to refresh and enhance our guest offer, Postman Pat Parcel Post ride will be closing in preparation for future development work at the resort. 'Our website has been updated, notifying guests of the planned closure.' The ride is set to be replaced by a kids rollercoaster. Despite this, some fans were left saddened by the ride's closure. 'Abbie Dolling' wrote on Facebook: 'Sad isn't it. We came today to have our last ride with our son who loves this ride.' 'Theme Park eye' said: 'Yesterday for us was a sad day because Postman Pat ride is now officially closed.' Another person described the closure as 'absolutely devastating' as they 'loved the ride'. 'Kip Hakes' said the decision to close the ride seemed 'really daft' as it had 'essentially no height restrictions'. Despite the ride's closure, guests will still be able to book a stay in the theme park hotel's Postman Pat Room. The deluxe room which can sleep a family of up to five is decorated with a Postman Pat theme.
