RECYCLE OLD JARS: You will need jars to put your pickle or relish in, and could get a 12-pack of 300ml ones at Hobbycraft for £9, but the cheapest way to get started is to reuse empty jam or sauce jars.
Give them a good wash, or pop in the dishwasher then use boiling water to rinse.
TANGY TREAT: Pickled red onions are easy. Finely slice the onion, pop in a jar, cover with white wine vinegar, £2 at Sainsbury's, and add a pinch of salt and of sugar.
Put the lid on and shake, leave for 20 minutes before trying — adding more vinegar, salt or sugar as you think best.
Pop in the fridge and use on everything from tacos to sarnies.
SPICE OF LIFE: Slice up any spare chilli peppers and pop in a jar.
Then put 100ml of water in a pan and heat on the stove with a few teaspoons of sugar and one of salt, plus you could add mustard seeds or bay leaves from your spice rack. Bring to the boil then pour the liquid into the jar.
Carefully put the lid on the jar and leave to cool. Once at room temperature, store in the fridge and the chillis should keep for a few months.
CRUNCHY RELISH: Use up any mini- cucumbers or radishes to make a tasty relish.
Slice your veg and keep it crunchy by adding to a sieve with ice cubes for ten to 20 minutes before pickling.
I've figured out how to make the perfect fried eggs - it's so simple, works every time and you don't even need any oil
Make a brine following the same instructions as before, leave to cool and add to the jar with your veg.
You can also add onion, and herbs such as dill, for extra flavour.
PASS THE CARROTS: The key for great pickled carrots is to cut them up into very fine matchsticks or use a peeler to create shavings.
Follow the same brine instructions as above, but add some rice wine vinegar if you have it, as well as a dash of fish sauce.
Once cooled and refrigerated, you can use these on Asian dishes such as dumplings or stir fries.
All prices on page correct at time of going to press. Deals and offers subject to availability.

Think again, because with a little creativity, your kitchen leftovers could become your next favourite cocktail. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up Here's some ideas . . . EGG 'N' SIPS: Leftover egg whites are a great addition to cocktails. Whisk them up and try them as a topping to gin fizz or sours for a velvet texture. Aquafaba (chickpea water) also works just as well. GIN WIN: If you have a few peaches or plums that are too ripe, give them a new life by infusing them in alcohol which takes on subtle flavours easily. Cut up the fruit and add to a jar with your spirit, such as gin or vodka, for a hint of sweetness in your next drink. A-PEELING DRINK: Apple peels and pear cores need not be wasted. Save your peels in a tub and keep them in the fridge to use as garnishes for cocktails. For added flare, gently use a lighter on a peeling and twist it — this should stay in place and it's what top mixologists use to top fancy cocktails. Carrot or beetroot peels also make vibrantly coloured syrups which are great for adding to cocktails. BERRY NICE: Use up the last of those blueberries, raspberries and blackberries to make a fruity syrup you can use in spritzes or to flavour sparkling water. The Emily in Paris cocktail Add berries to a pan of water with a few teaspoons of sugar. Simmer for five minutes and leave to cool before pouring into a jar to use for your next cocktails. CUP OF JOY: Used coffee grounds have so many uses but did you know you can infuse spirits or make coffee liqueur with them? Put the coffee in a jar and add around four tablespoons of sugar and a cinnamon stick, a vanilla bean pod or dash of vanilla essence. Leave overnight and add boiling water to the jar, strain the mixture through coffee filter paper and add a double shot of rum. Leave to cool and then store in the fridge. It's perfect for espresso martinis. 7 With a little creativity, your kitchen leftovers could become your next favourite cocktail Credit: Getty All prices on page correct at time of going to press. I'm a garden expert – here's the three low maintenance flowers you need to plant for extra vibrancy this summer

Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) EACH year, the average Brit splashes out hundreds of pounds to get their garden summer-ready. And with lighter evenings and warmer days fast approaching, many are finding their outdoor space is still weathered and in need of a makeover. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 The flowers you plant can make all the difference to your garden Credit: Getty With this in mind, the pergola and awnings specialists at Hillarys have provided their expert tips on how to transform your garden this spring and summer. First up, it's all about the type of flowers you plant. They said: "For a low-maintenance touch of colour within your garden, choose perennials throughout your garden for long-lasting colour that returns year after year, without the need to replant them, unlike annuals. "Try geraniums, lupins, or delphiniums to add extra vibrancy to your garden." And here's six other tips from the Hillarys team for revamping your garden too... Start with a clean slate The first step for any garden makeover is a bit of housekeeping. Start by clearing weeds, dead plants, leaves, and clutter from the garden. Then you can mow any grass, edge your lawn, refresh mulch, and a fan-favourite for garden transformations is pressure washing patios, fences, and furniture, making them look brand new. Brighten up your garden with outdoor lighting Whether you're aiming for a modern, sleek garden or a romantic cottage-core countryside escape, outdoor lighting can help make the evenings or dark days a little lighter. Fairy lights, candles, built in awning or ground lights all offer great lighting and enhance the atmosphere—look for solar-powered lighting options to keep your bills down but your mood up. Mrs Hinch raves about £2 Home Bargains buy that 'adds charm to your garden' & a £10 product that's 'cheaper than Amazon' Paint or stain tired wooden fences, sheds, and planters Woodwork can lose its colour quickly after being exposed to the UK weather, so if you want to give your fences, sheds, or planters more life, try staining or painting them. Popular colours that can instantly upgrade your garden include white, beige, sage green, or something more daring like black or pastel pink. Embellish pergolas with climbing plants Pergolas are a great way to ensure you have a consistent shade within your garden, providing a functional but comforting space within your sometimes sporadically sunny garden - a perfect place to read or work from home. Once installed, you can easily dress up pergolas and add height by playing with climbing plants such as roses or star-jasmine, which not only brighten your garden but smell amazing when in full bloom. Define your garden with pathways and borders Create structure and flow in your garden by adding gravel, stepping stones, or wood chip pathways within your space. Either embedded within the lawn to prevent foot traffic damage, or running alongside. Frame your grass with borders or hedges, raised planters, or flowering plants in garden beds to transform your backyard oasis. Revamp seating areas Seating areas are often the most important part of your garden where you gather with friends and family, eat alfresco, or even work in the sun. You can upgrade even the simplest bistro set by painting it, adding umbrellas or pergolas, and accessorising with outdoor cushions, rugs, blankets or side tables. Victoria Robinson, product manager at Hillarys, highlights how to enjoy your garden come rain or shine this summer. She said: 'British gardens often get neglected for most months of the year, so when the sun finally comes out of hiding, there is an annual scramble to refresh gardens and get them looking refreshed in time for summer. 'As well as the more simple changes you can make by adding pops of colour with beautiful florals, tidying up borders, and trimming back trees and bushes, investing in features such as pergolas can be a great way to elevate your patio area. "With additions such as lighting and heating, as well as rain protection, you can enjoy your garden no matter the weather or month - perfect for the unpredictable British weather!"

Inside the most A-list lido in London that only costs £5 to enter – with Harry Styles and Andrew Garfield as fans

One Hollywood star even borrowed trunks from a lifeguard to make sure he could take a dip in the water SWIM UP Inside the most A-list lido in London that only costs £5 to enter – with Harry Styles and Andrew Garfield as fans Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THE weather is heating up, summer is on its way, and there is a UK lido where you can go for a swim as well as a bit of celeb spotting. Celebrity-loved places are often exclusive to high-end clubs or restaurants, but Hampstead Heath is one where even 'normal' folk can visit for less than a fiver. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 5 The Hampstead Heath ponds and lido are a popular spot for locals and A-listers Credit: Alamy 5 There are three outdoor ponds and a lido on Parliament Hill Credit: Alamy Hampstead Heath has a choice of three ponds where visitors can swim for £4.80. There's the mixed pool, as well as Kenwood Ladies' and Highgate Men's pond - and there's Parliament Hill Fields Lido just down the road. The natural bathing ponds attract around 700,000 people every year and are often described as "a treasure" and one of "London's fantastic green gems" by visitors. Despite feeling quite secluded by those who visit, there are lifeguards on duty. None of the swim spots have changing facilities, so you'll have to wear your swim gear underneath your clothes. There are toilets and an outdoor shower. Lots of swimmers like to clamber out and enjoy a picnic on the grassy banks afterwards too. With lots of celebrities calling Hampstead Heath home, it's no surprise that a few familiar faces have been spotted cooling off in the ponds over the years. Harry Styles, the ex-One Direction star, has been seen multiple times enjoying the bathing ponds. One summer, he had temperatures soaring even higher when he practised his diving skills. One onlooker said: 'He kept a low profile and went mostly unrecognised. He was swimming laps and practising his diving.' Easter Sunday sunshine shots on Hampstead Heath and in Kings Cross 5 Parliament Hill Lido is unheated and open all year round Credit: Times Media Ltd Hollywood A-lister Woody Harrelson, who's known for his roles in the Hunger Games and Zombieland, has enjoyed the water at the Men's Pond. According to Camden New Journal, Woody didn't bring a pair of swimming trunks with him, so he borrowed a pair of swimming trunks from a lifeguard. Comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, actor Benedict Cumberbatch and broadcaster Dermot O'Leary are also said to be frequent swimmers. Back in 2018, Kendall Jenner stripped off for a project that was filmed in the ponds for Love Magazine's 10th anniversary issue. Spider-Man, aka actor Andrew Garfield, also revealed he's a regular in the London waters. Talking to Time Out, he said: "I love swimming in Hampstead Ponds. You feel close to nature – it's such a rare, beautiful thing." 5 During the summer swimming in the ponds has to be booked in advance Credit: Alamy During busy periods in the summer months (starting May 26), you will need to book a slot before heading down to the ponds or pool. Tickets are available through Eventbrite for £4.60. Bookable slots are between the hours of 12pm and 6pm with each being for for a 50 minute swim session. Tickets are released through Eventbrite on Mondays at 12pm for the following seven days (Tuesday to Monday). The morning sessions between the hours of 7am-11.30am and the evening sessions between 6.30pm-8.30pm are on a first come first served basis. If it's busy, then there will be queues outside - which there often are when temperatures rise. The Highgate Men's Pond and Kenwood Ladies' Pond are open year-round. Hampstead Mixed Pond is open from mid-April to October and in winter it's only open to members of the Hampstead Heath Winter Swimming Club. For any regulars, it could be worth investing in a season ticket. For Parliament Hill Lido this costs £240 for 12 months. A year-long membership to the ponds costs £150, and a combined membership is £268. For anyone not in the capital, here are the UK's best outdoor water parks and lidos. And good news for any outdoor swimmers in Portsmouth as the UK's deepest lido is reopening this summer.
