Three savvy ways to save cash by cutting food waste

Decorate your outdoor space for less with our Deal of the Day SUN SAVERS Three savvy ways to save cash by cutting food waste Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) BUSY lives and the demands of running a household can make it easy to lose track of what is in our fridge. Yet, the average UK family bins around £470-worth of food every year, according to charity Friends Of The Earth. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up If you're looking to save some cash, try cutting down on food waste with some of these tips . . . USE-UP DAY: Try allocating one day of the week to using up food that's in your fridge. Ideally you should pick the day just before you do a weekly shop and an evening that you're usually at home. Pick out the food that needs to be used and team it with food from your freezer or cupboards. Make it fun by setting a challenge and getting your kids or partner involved too. Set the challenge of who can come up with the most creative dish? Tesco has a recipe-finder tool where you can enter three ingredients that need using up and it will match them with a dish to make. PLAN MEALS: Work out what you're going to eat before you shop for the week, so you don't buy food that you don't need or won't have time to eat. Try buying fruit and veg loose to avoid buying more than needed. For example, a handful of potatoes or carrots for the meal you planned rather than the big bag that you don't need. Forget bubble and squeak I make the best left over roast dinner pie- Make sure you're storing your fresh food to keep it at its best for longer, giving you more time to eat it. Popping most fruit and veg in the fridge, except bananas, will make them last longer. FREEZER FRIENDS: If you cook more food than needed, consider popping it in the freezer for another day. Make sure all cooked food is cool before you freeze it and divide it into portions. Label and date food when you put it in the freezer, so you know how long it's been in there. It's not just leftovers that can be frozen — any food that you haven't got around to eating such as bread, milk and bananas can also go in the freezer. Five savvy ways to make your own delicious jam at home

Save on a pair of Zero Gravity sun loungers with our Deal of the Day SUN SAVERS Five savvy ways to make your own delicious jam at home MEGHAN MARKLE's As Ever apricot spread sold out in minutes earlier this month – even though it cost an eye-watering £11. But you can create jam or spread at home for a fraction of that royally high price. 8 Five savvy ways to make your own delicious jam at home Credit: Getty Here's how to do it . . . PACK IT IN: Firstly, get your jars ready. A pack of six jars on costs £11.99, but save any pasta sauce jars and you won't need to spend. Give your recycled jars a wash in hot soapy water before rinsing and leaving to dry. DIY: All you need to make your own apricot-style jam is fresh apricots, £1.69, lemons, 89p, and sugar, £1.75, all Lidl. Pit and crush the apricots and heat in a pan with the juice of one lemon. Add around 400g of sugar and bring the heat up until the sugar all dissolves. Leave on a low heat and stir for 25 minutes. Once it's thickened, add to jars. SETTING SECRETS: No sugar in the cupboard? How to make fluffy scones in the slow cooker during lockdown A cheap way to add sweetness is to grate half a cooking apple into your apricot mixture. Pick one up for around 63p at Tesco. You can also do this if you're making jam with strawberries or blueberries. BUDGET TIP: If you're not up to whipping up your own version of apricot spread, you could cheat. Get a tin of apricot halves in syrup or fruit juice, £1.10, at Sainsbury's, and mash, before spreading on toast. All the flavour for a bargain price. MAKE A BATCH: This is where the savings kick in. Skip apricots and use frozen fruit like Morrisons Wonky Berry mix, £2.99 for 1kg. Add approximately 600g of sugar and juice of two lemons. LABEL OF LOVE: Make like Meghan and give your jam a touch of luxury with handwritten labels cut from brown paper and tie on to your jar lids with string. Instead of HRH, you could write 'MHJ' for 'My Homemade Jam'. All prices on page correct at time of going to press. Deals and offers subject to availability. 8 Meghan Markle's jam costs an eye-watering £11 Credit: Deal of the day 8 Save £35.01 on a pair of Zero Gravity sun loungers for your garden Credit: Supplied MAKE the most of the sunshine by getting a pair of Zero Gravity sun loungers for your garden. Black Friday-like sales are now in summer too, as Target, Best Buy compete with Amazon Prime Days

America's big retailers, including Best Buy and Target, continue to lean into big mid-summer events to boost sales as the back-to-school season begins. Amazon Prime Days is the impetus for the dayslong sales, but each retailer has done things to stand out. "We try to do everything that is the best of who Best Buy is, so it's the mixture of every category, it's the mixture of Doorbusters, the 'Deal of the Day' and then obviously bringing additional value on top of that to our members," said Jason Bonfig, senior vice president of customer offerings and fulfillment for Best Buy. The "Black Friday in July" promotions come as the Richfield-based electronics retailer is trying to regain ground. The sales also come at a time when consumers are limiting how much they spend on nonessentials. According to a PwC survey of nearly 1,200 parents, 37% of shoppers plan to pull back on back-to-school spending and 44% are lessening spending on technology. More than one-third plan to only buy items on sale. Best Buy's sale runs July 7-13, overlapping with Amazon's extended Prime Day offering from July 8 to 11. Minneapolis-based Target's summer promotion, Circle Week, runs from July 6 to 12. Prime Day previously ran for two days, giving Best Buy a clear advantage when it came to "top tech" deals. This year, Best Buy has changed its sale a bit to sway consumers. The retailer will also offer Doorbusters - a sales initiative offered on Black Friday - for the first time during this year's event. Like Prime Days and Circle Week, new deals will be available every day. My Best Buy Plus and My Best Buy Total members will also get exclusive access to rewards, such as a $20 reward for every $200 spent on tablets, e-readers and accessories. Target made its Circle Week announcement last Monday as part of its back-to-school promotion events. College students and teachers will both receive a one-time 20% off storewide discount with Target Circle. The company is also holding the pricing offered last back-to-school season. "This is such an important time for everyone preparing to head back to class - or heading off to school for the first time," said Rick Gomez, chief commercial officer at Target. "The Target team will be there for families by holding last year's prices on key school supplies and standing tall for unrivaled style, quality and exceptional value." Best Buy's sales event comes a little over a month after its midnight opening parties, celebrating the Nintendo Switch 2 launch. The launch marked a major sales moment for Best Buy, but the company also saw it as a starting point for continued engagement - both for Nintendo-related sales and renewed interest in the retailer's offerings. It also sets the stage for the launch of Best Buy's third-party digital marketplace. CEO Corie Barry said the retailer is "on pace for a midyear launch" in a first quarter earnings call. The electronics retailer previously opened its website to select outside sellers from 2011 to 2016. About 200 sellers were participating before the initiative ended, reportedly due to low sales and customer confusion around returns. Similar to Target, Best Buy's rebooted marketplace will bring in vendors by invite only. Best Buy launched a refined approach to the third-party marketplace in Canada in 2016. Third-party sellers now account for 25% of orders shipped on according to Jefferies. The U.S. marketplace could account for 14% of online sales by the end of the decade, according to the investment bank's research. "Canada's had a marketplace for nine years and we've learned a lot from all the success they've had. We want to make sure we replicate that in the U.S. and even make it a little bit better," Bonfig said. Barry previously said Best Buy's U.S. marketplace will focus more on new products and offering multiple versions of the same product. "I think what we've learned from Canada is that there is a demand to go deeper into the assortment," Barry said in an earnings call. "We can see that in customers who are searching our website and looking for a broader selection or looking for a broader quantity of products, and we just don't have them there." Five tips to give leftover vegetables a second chance with a ‘wow' factor

Scroll down to check out the Deal of the Day SUN SAVERS Five tips to give leftover vegetables a second chance with a 'wow' factor Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) HAVING family over soon but stuck for ideas as well as cash? You could jazz up dishes, for added wow factor, just by using leftover uncooked veg to knock up some pickle or relish. Here's some ideas . . . Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up RECYCLE OLD JARS: You will need jars to put your pickle or relish in, and could get a 12-pack of 300ml ones at Hobbycraft for £9, but the cheapest way to get started is to reuse empty jam or sauce jars. Give them a good wash, or pop in the dishwasher then use boiling water to rinse. TANGY TREAT: Pickled red onions are easy. Finely slice the onion, pop in a jar, cover with white wine vinegar, £2 at Sainsbury's, and add a pinch of salt and of sugar. Put the lid on and shake, leave for 20 minutes before trying — adding more vinegar, salt or sugar as you think best. Pop in the fridge and use on everything from tacos to sarnies. SPICE OF LIFE: Slice up any spare chilli peppers and pop in a jar. Then put 100ml of water in a pan and heat on the stove with a few teaspoons of sugar and one of salt, plus you could add mustard seeds or bay leaves from your spice rack. Bring to the boil then pour the liquid into the jar. Carefully put the lid on the jar and leave to cool. Once at room temperature, store in the fridge and the chillis should keep for a few months. CRUNCHY RELISH: Use up any mini- cucumbers or radishes to make a tasty relish. Slice your veg and keep it crunchy by adding to a sieve with ice cubes for ten to 20 minutes before pickling. I've figured out how to make the perfect fried eggs - it's so simple, works every time and you don't even need any oil Make a brine following the same instructions as before, leave to cool and add to the jar with your veg. You can also add onion, and herbs such as dill, for extra flavour. PASS THE CARROTS: The key for great pickled carrots is to cut them up into very fine matchsticks or use a peeler to create shavings. Follow the same brine instructions as above, but add some rice wine vinegar if you have it, as well as a dash of fish sauce. Once cooled and refrigerated, you can use these on Asian dishes such as dumplings or stir fries. All prices on page correct at time of going to press. Deals and offers subject to availability. 8 Combine leftover vegetables and empty jars for easy storage Credit: Getty Deal of the day 8 This Graco Myavo Stroller is currently reduced to £99.99 Credit: Supplied PICK up the Graco Myavo Stroller in midnight black at – usually £124.99, now £99.99 as part of the baby goods sale.
