Every year, millions of Americans gather and celebrate Independence Day with awe inspiring fireworks, parades and backyard barbeques. With this historic tradition comes a sobering reality- a rising number of firework-related injuries and visits to emergency departments.
Last year alone, 14,700 people were treated for firework injuries across emergency departments throughout America, a 52% increase when compared to the previous year according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. 11 people were killed last year from such injuries.
Who Is Most At Risk?
Firework injuries can affect anyone but they most commonly occur in adults aged 25 to 44, who represent 32% of such injuries, followed by people aged 15 to 24 according to the U.S. CPSC. Children can be particularly vulnerable to such injuries, particularly when unsupervised by adults. In addition, two thirds of firework injuries (67%) are reported to occur in males, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology.
Common Firework Injuries
Firework injuries are diverse, but skin burns are by far the most common type of such injury, making up about 37% of emergency room visits. Other serious injuries include lacerations which are cuts or wounds on the skin, fractures of bones and even amputations if burns are so severe that they compromise vascular blood flow to critical nearby organs. When burns and injuries involve the eyes and ears; permanent vision and hearing loss can also occur.
These injuries can occur through all sorts of mediums, including sparklers, firebombs, firecrackers, smoke bombs and bottle rockets to name a few. Sparklers, which are often perceived as harmless, can burn at temperatures of 2,000 degrees Fahrenheit which can essentially melt metals. Sparklers are the leading cause of firework injuries, and a significant portion of these occur in children.
Essentially any body part can be affected from fireworks, depending upon the site of impact from the fire and its debris. Common areas of the body that are affected include the fingers, hands, face, eyes, ears and legs.

A few minutes of preparation before enjoying firework festivities can save a lifetime of disability or a life-altering injury.
The best way to ensure the safety of yourself and your loved ones is to watch fireworks professionally. The vast majority of public firework displays are conducted by trained pyrotechnicians who follow strict protocols and safety guidelines. This minimizes the risks for harmful injuries that could occur to the general public.
If you do decide to engage with fireworks on your own, make sure that the products are all legal and certified. Illegal fireworks can contain harmful chemicals and products that could result in more severe injuries if they contact different parts of the body.
Children should never use fireworks, and the use of all fireworks should be done by adults. Adults must also be fully alert and oriented when using fireworks, as being under the influence of drugs and alcohol can alter judgment, coordination and significantly increase the risk of firework injuries.
Keeping a safe distance away from fireworks is also of paramount importance. Picking an open area devoid of buildings, trees and animals can prevent the start of a fire. Viewers of ground-based fireworks should establish a safety perimeter of 35 feet, and this distance should be 150 feet if viewing aerial fireworks according to the Cleveland Clinic.
For the individuals that are actually operating the fireworks, an important safety precaution to remember is to light the fireworks away from the body without projecting the face over the fire. Once lighted, you should step back and away from the fireworks immediately. This can prevent debris and chemicals from coming into the eyes and other parts of the body.
Finally, if an injury does occur, seek medical attention and visit a hospital immediately. There are some practical tips that can be performed even before reaching the emergency room. For burns, cool it with cool water followed by applying a dry sterile dressing over it. If the injury involves the eye, do not apply water or any ointments over it. Instead, apply a clean dressing over the eye and go to the hospital immediately.
Fireworks are and should be a beloved tradition on July 4th. By choosing safety, you can ensure the night ends with laughter and joy, as opposed to a ride on the ambulance.

Mayors, doctor groups sue over Trump's efforts to restrict Obamacare enrollment
WASHINGTON (AP) — New Trump administration rules that give millions of people a shorter timeframe to sign up for the Affordable Care Act's health care coverage are facing a legal challenge from Democratic mayors around the country. The rules, rolled out last month, reverse a Biden-era effort to expand access to the Affordable Care Act's health insurance, commonly called 'Obamacare' or the ACA. The previous Democratic administration expanded the enrollment window for the coverage, which led to record enrollment. The Department of Health and Human Services rolled out a series of new restrictions for Obamacare late last month, just as Congress was weighing a major bill that will decrease enrollment in the health care program that Republican President Donald Trump has scorned for years. As many as 2 million people — nearly 10% — are expected to lose coverage from the health department's new rules. The mayors of Baltimore, Chicago and Columbus, Ohio sued the federal health department on Tuesday over the rules, saying they will result in more uninsured residents and overburden city services. 'Cloaked in the pretense of government efficiency and fraud prevention, the 2025 Rule creates numerous barriers to affordable insurance coverage, negating the purpose of the ACA to extend affordable health coverage to all Americans, and instead increasing the population of underinsured and uninsured Americans,' the filing alleges. Two liberal advocacy groups — Doctors for America and Main Street Alliance — joined in on the complaint. The federal health department announced a series of changes late last month to the ACA. It will shorten the enrollment period for the federal marketplace by a month, limiting it to Nov. 1 to Dec. 15 in 2026. Income verification checks will become more stringent and a $5 fee will be tacked on for some people who automatically re-enroll in a free plan. Insurers will also be able to deny coverage to people who have not paid their premiums on past plans. The rules also bar roughly 100,000 immigrants who were brought to the U.S. as children from signing up for the coverage. HHS said in a statement that the polices 'are temporary measures to immediately tamp down on improper enrollments and the improper flow of federal funds.' The mayors — all Democrats — argue that the polices were introduced without an adequate public comment period on the policies. 'This unlawful rule will force families off their health insurance and raise costs on millions of Americans. This does nothing to help people and instead harms Americans' health and safety across our country,' said Skye Perryman, the president of Democracy Forward, which is representing the coalition of plaintiffs in the lawsuit. The lawsuit does not challenge the Trump administration's restriction on immigrants signing up for the coverage. The Biden administration saw gains in Obamacare enrollment as a major success of the Democratic president's term, noting that a record 24 million people signed up for the coverage, thanks to generous tax breaks offered through the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act. But the program has been a target of Trump, who has said it is riddled with problems that make the coverage unaffordable for many without large subsidies. Enrollment in the program dipped during his first term in office.

RFK Jr. Says Removing Fluoride Will Cause More Cavities
Secretary of Health and Human Services Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., has touted his plan to Make America Healthy Again (MAHA), which includes stances backed by questionable scientific evidence. He has spoken out against vaccines, called on states to ban fluoride, and made ableist comments about autism. Just last week, he actually let it slip that he's well aware that at least one of those initiatives could have some terrible consequences. On FOX's "The Faulkner Focus," news anchor Harris Faulkner asked RFK, Jr. about his stance on removing fluoride from drinking water. In particular, she questioned him about dentists' concerns that children from low-income families may not be able to get the preventative care that they'd need to protect them from tooth decay. Kennedy replied, "You know, it is an issue. It's a balance. You're gonna see probably slightly more cavities." The secretary went on to say, "Although in Europe, where they banned fluoride, they did not see an uptick in cavities. The issue is, parents need to decide because the science is very clear on fluoride. The National Toxicity Program issued a said there's a direct inverse correlation between the amount of fluoride in your water and loss of IQ." The American Dental Association (ADA) released a statement in April 2025, saying that the ADA "believes that good oral health depends on proper diet, nutrition, oral hygiene, and optimally fluoridated water. Eighty years of community water fluoridation at optimal levels has proven to be safe and effective at reducing tooth decay to improve oral health." Historically, there are cities in the US and internationally that have removed fluoride from their water supply and seen increased cavities as a result. The New York Times reported that Calgary, in Alberta, Canada, is reintroducing fluoride into its water supply after 10 years, starting just this week. They noted that "The Alberta Children's Hospital saw a stark increase in the number of children from Calgary who needed antibiotics to treat dental infections after fluoride was removed from the drinking water." Unsurprisingly, people on Reddit had some thoughts on the secretary's comments. "Could we, instead, maybe focus on banning lead in our drinking water? We'll tell him it's to reduce obesity." "So, honestly asking says it's a balance…so what are we gaining for the increase in dental costs to the tune of $300/year average for all Americans?" "I used to be a dental hygienist. All this will do is cause people who have no money to now have to spend it on dental, but they can't. They won't because they can't. Increasing poverty. I hate this MF." "For the kids and adults who don't have access to dental care for whatever reason, this is going to be devastating. It hurts nothing and helps those who need it most." "How does having more cavities in children's mouths make us great and healthy again?" The conversation continued over on Twitter (X), with one user saying, "More cavities for kids in families who can't afford dental care." "Gonna see slightly more cavities, but luckily in exchange for that we're going to get absolutely no benefits whatsoever so I guess it's a fair tradeoff," said another. Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) drew friendly fire from within his state's congressional delegation, with Rep. Brendan Boyle (D-Pa.) slamming him for his comments about missing his family's 'entire trip to the beach' during the megabill vote-a-rama. Fetterman has increasingly faced criticism from Democrats for loudly breaking from party lines, as President Donald Trump called him 'the most sensible' Democratic senator Friday. 'To me, I think this is one of the most important things I will ever do, full stop. There is no place I would rather be than right here, right now, and if I can make a difference and stop this bill from happening, I will do whatever it takes,' Boyle said in The Bulwark interview. 'That should be the attitude, frankly, of every Democratic member of the House and Senate.'
