Tesla's stock is tumbling as Elon Musk fails to shift the narrative

Elon Musk's big promises apparently no longer seem to be enough for many Tesla investors.
Shares of Tesla fell 9 percent on Thursday (US time) following another dismal earnings report, released after the bell Wednesday.
Tesla's earnings and revenue both
fell by double-digit percentages
following the biggest sales drop in the company's history. The automaker also faces a number of financial headwinds, including the loss of a US$7500 (NZ$12,435) tax credit for US EV buyers starting in October, and the vanishing market for
regulatory credit sales
, which has earned Tesla US$11 billion (NZ$18.2b) since 2019.
But Tesla CEO Elon Musk barely talked about that on the earnings call Wednesday, although he did acknowledge the company "probably could have a few rough quarters". Instead, he talked about his grand vision for the future, including Tesla's long-promised
robotaxi service
; and its humanoid robot, Optimus,
which is still in development
.
The lack of details about the company's plans to solve problems in the near term disappointed some investors and analysts.
"Investors have been very forgiving of Tesla for several quarters now, despite obvious headwinds to their business," Garrett Nelson, analyst at CFRA Research, told CNN Thursday. "But I think its investors are taking a more realistic view of the story at this point. Some of his brilliance has been his ability to keep investors focused on the long-term and ignoring the near term and intermediate term. Now, headwinds are difficult to ignore."
Nelson downgraded the company's stock to a neutral rating in April. But even some of the Tesla bulls on Wall Street are saying that the time for Musk to take action is running out.
"The street is losing some patience," Wedbush Securities tech analyst Dan Ives told CNN Thursday, although he said he still believes in the autonomous vehicle and artificial intelligence vision laid out by Musk and Tesla.
Musk has made big promises about his robotaxi service, including that it would be in service within a year as early as 2019.
Tesla's robotaxis finally rolled out in June this year, albeit in a limited portion of Austin, Texas, to friends and fans of the company, and with an employee sitting beside the empty driver's seat. However, that
limited rollout
wasn't enough to stop Musk from making extraordinary claims on Wednesday that the service would be available to half the nation's population by year's end. To achieve that, Tesla will need to get regulatory permission to operate in two states per week through the rest of the year, including New York, which does not allow autonomous vehicles on its roads.
Morningstar analyst Seth Goldstein said that while he does believe Tesla will eventually be successful in its robotaxi venture, "the software will require further testing" and he does not expect a full robotaxi product until 2028.
But Musk has a history of making grand promises that do not pan out.
Like the
Cybertruck
- the only new vehicle Tesla has offered in the last six years. Musk said Tesla was supposed to be delivering 250,000 vehicles annually by this year. But full-year sales of the Cybertruck and Tesla's two other expensive models
were less than 80,000
. Sales of the three plunged 52 percent in the most recent quarter.
Tesla also started the year forecasting it would achieve higher sales following its first annual sales drop in its history in 2024. But after two quarters of record sales declines, most investors now assume that it will not meet that goal either.
And with Musk himself barely mentioning car sales during an hour-long conference call, it doesn't appear that is enough for shareholders any longer.
"We are mixed on Tesla's ability to meet its robotaxi timelines, cost targets, and scale," wrote Ben Kallo, an analyst for Baird, in a note to clients late Wednesday. "So far Tesla has received a pass due to how ambitious/revolutionary these products are, but we think continued sluggishness in the auto business could cause more focus on the near term."

Term-limited Trump has $340 million war chest to spend on political goals
The super PAC's exact cash on hand is US$196.1m, according to the filing. There is no precedent for politicians so aggressively raising money for their own entities when they do not have a campaign to use it for. In the first half of 2013, a similar political group supporting a term-limited Barack Obama, Priorities USA, raised just $356,000. As of that June, it held $3.4 million, less than 2% of the cash on hand for Trump's super PAC. The money raised by Maga Inc. during the first six months of the year is almost twice the amount collected by the Republican National Committee, which is subject to contribution limits. Yass donated US$15m to the super PAC, and Horowitz and Andreessen combined to donate an additional US$11m. That Trump is raising so much money for his group has confounded some Republicans. Some of Trump's most loyal supporters have argued that he should try to run for a third term, despite it being unconstitutional. Trump's aides have argued that he would be foolish not to accept money that is essentially for the taking, and that the assets can be used to target Trump's rivals, beginning with Representative Thomas Massie, (Republican-Kentucky), whom Maga Inc. is attacking. Massie broke with Trump on the President's decision to bomb Iran and on his domestic bill. With a US$200m war chest, Maga Inc. figures to be a big part of Republican primaries, making Trump's endorsements in those races all the more important. The money is sure to be spent on advertising to back Trump's endorsed candidates. The sum raised by Trump's group has scrambled the Republican fundraising landscape and worried some conservatives. Trump's group, not those of the Republican leadership in the House and Senate, will most likely be the biggest spender in the 2026 Midterm elections, weakening the power of allies like Speaker Mike Johnson and Senator John Thune, the Majority Leader. Johnson's and Thune's groups, the Congressional and Senate Leadership Funds, reported holding just US$32.7m and US$29.7m as of June 30. Super PACs had to file reports with the FEC by today detailing fundraising and spending activity from January to June. Perhaps the only group that could rival the influence of Trump's super PAC is Fairshake, a super PAC supported by the crypto industry that entered July with about US$140m on hand, filings show. Maga Inc. also has an allied political non-profit group that is not required to disclose its donors or total donations but can spend some of its money on political advocacy. The New York Times reported in May that Maga Inc. and the non-profit had raised about US$400m since last November's election. Support from Musk was never guaranteed. He initially pledged to Trump that he would spend about US$100m on the President's political operation, but his eventual contributions were far smaller — just US$5m. Musk's relationship with Trump has recently blown up, and Musk now considers himself unaligned politically. The Tesla chief also made contributions to the Senate and Congressional Leadership Funds, the filings reveal. Musk donated US$5m to each group a few weeks after his public blow-up with Trump, seemingly a signal that he planned to back Republicans in the Midterms. A few days later, after Trump's budget bill passed, he pledged to leave the Republican Party and start a rival entity. He has made little headway in that work. The filings also reveal that Musk spent about US$45m through his super PAC, America PAC, on a Wisconsin judicial race. Two-thirds of the money that Musk put into the super PAC in the first half of the year went to incentives for people who had signed or promoted a petition hawked by the super PAC, according to its filing. Musk's chosen candidate lost badly. Other significant donations in the first half of 2025 revealed this week included US$10m from Yass to a super PAC supporting Vivek Ramaswamy, who is running for governor of Ohio; US$1m from Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison to support Senator Lindsey Graham, (R-South Carolina), a longtime friend; and millions from Paul Singer, John Paulson, and a group backed by Miriam Adelson to another anti-Massie group, donations that Musk deemed 'interesting'. Thousands bank more than $1 million in Sharesies and Hatch
Thousands of New Zealanders now have more than $1 million saved in online DIY investing accounts. Sharesies co-founder Leighton Roberts said this week that the investing platform now has more than 1500 portfolios with more than $1 million invested. Fewer than 100 of them included KiwiSaver. "It has escalated over the last 12 months," he said. "Particularly as markets recovered. Quite a few people bought in quite heavily during the turmoil earlier this year." He said he was surprised by the holdings of the larger portfolios. "Across that group there's 1100 different instruments being held, which is way more than I would have expected for portfolios this size." He said while funds were the majority of most Sharesies' investors' portfolios, those with $1m-plus balances had invested heavily directly in companies such as Tesla , Rocket Lab, Nvidia, Infratil, Xero, Meridian, Ryman, Air New Zealand and Fonterra. "It's probably half and half New Zealand and US shares … way fewer ETFs than normally makes up a portfolio. I guess these people have gone in with quite high conviction." Some could be people who were being given shares from companies they worked for, such as Xero and Meridian, he said. "In general, the larger portfolios on our platform look to be making quite conviction-based decisions." Some might have built up their investments over a long period, he said, and some transferred into Sharesies. "Some like Rocket Lab and Nvidia have seen such big price rises that the actual buy-in didn't need to be that huge to hit these numbers. My daughter I think is up 1000 percent on Rocket Lab although that unfortunately is nowhere near $1 million." He said it was good to see confidence in investing growing. Waimarie Marks, managing director of Hatch and Invest Direct said there were just over 1200 portfolios with more than $1m on her platforms. She said investing platforms had been around for long enough that people had become comfortable with them. "It's the ability of people to have optionality over a longer period of time. We saw a big boom in 2021, and 2020 with Covid too then it mellowed out a bit but with the economic conditions and interest rates changing again , having the ability to invest in something that can be bigger than what we've normally had access to - that's what is driving it. There are multiple market options for products, fixed interest, all those things allowing people to do more." Dean Anderson, founder of Kernel Wealth, said he had some customers with tens of millions of dollars in their accounts who were looking for cost-effective or DIY options for the investments. "We see this as a growing category - driven by those looking for a long-term, digital-first, tax and fee efficient way to manage intergenerational wealth. Feeding into this is also our wider Kiwi success, where there are so many outstanding companies and startups having success, being sold, and creating a new generation of wealth in New Zealand. This first generation of material wealth are looking for a different solution compared to the past." He said older generations had the bulk of the wealth but there was also a "first wave" of inheritances coming through to their children. "They're receiving some assets and going 'what do we do with this now'. They're much more in control, looking for a more digital-led solution. They want choice. "It generally surprised me, the size of the accounts. The balances we're talking about, I would have assumed 12 months ago those accounts would have an adviser but they don't. They may be setting up their own structure, managing it themselves - people with multimillion-dollar accounts are well informed and making their own decisions." Trump plans to impose a Russia ‘penalty' on India in addition to a 25 percent tariff as trade talks stall

Photo: AFP / Pool / Christopher Furlong US President Donald Trump is ratcheting up the pressure on India, calling into question the prospects of a deal with a key US trading partner just days before his tariff deadline. Trump, in a pair of social media posts Wednesday, sharply attacked India's trade barriers and directly targeted India's sustained reliance on Russian oil purchases and military equipment. He doubled down on his threat to impose 25 percent tariffs on all Indian imports and threatened an additional "penalty" in response to India's energy purchases. "Remember, while India is our friend, we have, over the years, done relatively little business with them because their Tariffs are far too high, among the highest in the World, and they have the most strenuous and obnoxious non-monetary Trade Barriers of any Country," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "Also, they have always bought a vast majority of their military equipment from Russia, and are Russia's largest buyer of ENERGY, along with China, at a time when everyone wants Russia to STOP THE KILLING IN UKRAINE - ALL THINGS NOT GOOD!" Trump's tariff escalation comes on the heels of a series of deals with major US trading partners that have set a rough baseline of between 15 percent and 20 percent and included a series of pledges to expand market access for US products and foreign investment commitments. For India, it marks a major setback in a months-long effort to secure a deal that officials believed on several occasions was nearing the finish line. Top trade officials have been transiting back and forth between the Washington and New Delhi for months in pursuit of a final agreement. But the recent trade agreements with Japan and the European Union have emboldened Trump in the final days before the August 1 deadline for the administration's paused "reciprocal" tariffs to snap back into place, officials say. Trump's ability to secure commitments on market access for US producers has become a particularly salient fixation as Trump has reviewed draft offers in recent days, the officials said. That has created a significant obstacle to the prospects of an agreement with India, one official told CNN. "They're willing to go part of the way," the official said. "But the president isn't in a 'part of the way' mood - he wants barriers removed completely or as close to completely as possible." Trump's approach is tied in part to a strategy that has become increasingly apparent to foreign trade officials involved in late-stage talks: Trump has no qualms about letting those higher tariffs go into place - a message he's delivered repeatedly in public over the last several weeks. But it's also created an environment in which Trump has embraced a clear sense of leverage over trading partners - even close allies - who are desperate to maintain access to the world's largest consumer market. "I think President Trump is frustrated with the progress we've made with India but feels that a 25 percetn rariff will address and remedy the situation in a way that's good for the American people," Director of the National Economic Council Kevin Hassett said at the White House on Wednesday. The tariffs on India, Hassett said, might cause them to "reconsider their practices." "Over time, I would guess that Indian firms will be onshoring production in the US, and Indians might even open their markets more to us so that we reconsider our future trades," Hassett added. At the same time, Trump has escalated in parallel his threat to impose secondary sanctions on Russian energy exports in response to Russian President Vladimir Putin's refusal to de-escalate attacks on Ukraine. That dynamic, which has long been weighed across successive administrations, would directly impact India and China most as nations who purchase the bulk of Russian energy products. India's oil imports from Russia have ticked up this year as Russia continued to be the top supplier to the world's most populous nation. Russia for roughly 35 percent of India's overall supplies, followed by Iraq, Saudi Arabia, and United Arab Emirates. CNN has reached out to the White House for more information on what the penalty will be and if India will be receiving an official letter from the United States marking the tariff, as other nations have received. On Tuesday, Trump told reporters that India would pay 25 percent tariffs if they don't reach a deal by August 1. When imposing a 50-day deadline on Russia to reach a ceasefire earlier this month, Trump announced that countries that purchase Russian oil would face secondary sanctions. That ceasefire deadline has since moved to August 8. Trump officials have been privately making clear to counterparts that Trump's threat to significantly escalate an already sweeping US sanctions regime on Russia should be taken seriously and is not a negotiating ploy, the officials said. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Tuesday he shared that message directly with his Chinese counterparts during trade talks in Stockholm. "I think anyone who buys sanctioned Russian oil should be ready for this," Bessent told reporters at a news conference at the conclusion of the talks. According to an analysis of Russian fossil fuel exports and sanctions conducted by the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air in June, India continued to be the second-largest buyer of Russian fossil fuels behind China. - CNN
