The 10 most stressed states in America
If you're feeling overwhelmed and upset about the responsibilities that fill your daily life, you're not alone.
In fact, half of all Americans report dealing with frequent daily stress — and that number jumps to 55% of men and 69% of women between the ages of 18 and 49, according to Gallup. And while stress can affect everyone, there are some communities where far more of the population struggles than others.
'There are plenty of small ways for people to manage stress,' said Cassandra Happe, an analyst at the consumer finance website WalletHub, in a statement. 'What many people don't realize, though, is that changing location can be a big stress reducer. For example, states that have lower crime rates, better health care and better economies tend to have much less stressed residents.'
A WalletHub analysis ranked all 50 states based on residents' stress levels in four categories: work-related stress, money-related stress, family-related stress, and health and safety-related stress. Those scores were based on the states' performances across 40 metrics, including the average hours worked per week and rates of personal bankruptcies, divorce, and suicide.
WalletHub pulled data from several sources including the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Texas is the tenth most stressed state. The Lone Star State came in fifth place for work-related stress and eighth place for family-related stress.

New Mexico is the fourth most stressed state. The Land of Enchantment came in third place for money-related stress and second place for family-related stress.
Nevada is the third most stressed state. The Silver State came in first place for family-related stress, eighth place for health and safety-related stress, and tenth place for money-related stress.
Mississippi is the second most stressed state. The Magnolia State came in seventh place for health and safety-related stress, fifth place for family-related stress, fourth place for work-related stress, and first place for money related stress.
Louisiana is the most stressed state. The Bayou State came in tenth place for family-related stress, fourth place for money-related stress, and third place for both work-related stress and health and safety-related stress.

About 10.9 million Americans would lose health insurance coverage under the President Donald Trump's tax cut bill that cleared the House but faces a tough test in the Senate, a new analysis shows. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office said about 10.9 million Americans would lose health insurance coverage through 2034 under the bill, including 1.4 million undocumented residents who get coverage through state-funded programs. The legislation that cleared the House would require nondisabled Americans on Medicaid to work at least 80 hours per month or qualify for an exemption, such as being a student or caregiver. The bill also would strip coverage to immigrants who get Medicaid through state-funded programs. The analysis said the bill would cut federal spending by about $1.3 trillion through 2034. But it would also deliver tax cuts of $3.75 trillion, and the federal deficit would increase nearly $2.4 trillion over the next decade. Health analysts said if the Medicaid changes as well as tweaks to the Affordable Care Act marketplace clear Congress, the effects on health insurance coverage would be significant. The CBO earlier estimated nearly 4 million people would lose health insurance coverage through 2034 if Congress did not extend sweetened COVID-19 pandemic-era tax credits that have made ACA plans more affordable for consumers. Trump's Medicaid overhaul as well as the expiration of the more generous ACA tax credit could jeopardize health insurance coverage for nearly 15 million people, said Kathy Hempstead, a senior policy officer at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. "We're making a giant U-turn here," said Hempstead. "Are we really going to be a thriving, productive society if we have a huge share of our population uninsured?" Hempstead said the uninsured might delay care and accrue more medical debt. She also said hospitals and doctors also will take a financial hit as uncompensated care rises. "There's going to be a big hit on on the health care economy as people stop getting care and start trying to get care that they can't pay for," Hempstead said. Letters: He overdosed after being turned away by S.F. drug treatment center. Mother seeks answers
Jonathan Martin, my son, overdosed after he was turned away from HealthRight360's detox facility on Aug. 27, 2024. Jonathan was desperately ill and seeking help. He died alone early the next morning. Jonathan's death was the subject of a Chronicle story ('He overdosed waiting for help. Why did S.F.'s largest drug treatment center provider turn him away?' San Francisco, Feb. 27). When the story was published, I sent a letter to Mayor Daniel Lurie, District Attorney Brooke Jenkins, the chiefs of the Department of Public Health and relevant agencies, HealthRight360 CEO Vitka Eisen and every member of the Board of Supervisors, hoping to find out why my son was turned away. I wanted to understand what prevented him from receiving the services he so urgently needed. I have still not received a single response, explanation or even a note of condolence from any of these officials. If the people who oversee drug treatment in the city will not answer a grieving mother, who will give my family answers? Citizens of San Francisco: You voted these people into office.
