Singapore is known for its rich hawker heritage, but that's not the only form of cuisine we excel in. Our high-end restaurant scene stays winning too, with plenty of fancy fine-dining establishments receiving recognition in global culinary awards like La Liste and Asia's 50 Best Restaurants 2025.
Now here's another gourmet-related achievement to celebrate. The first-ever overseas award ceremony for the Black Pearl Restaurant Guide was recently hosted at Marina Bay Sands on April 25, 2025, and Singapore has an impressive record high of 16 restaurants as part of the winning line-up. Out of these, five are new entrants on the list, namely: Cassia, Jade Palace Seafood Restaurant, Peach Blossoms, Seroja, and Waku Ghin – all of which scored a one-diamond award. Peach Blossoms also bags the 2025 Annual Dish Award for its Crispy Scales Fillet of Marble Goby in Spicy Pineapple Sauce, pictured below.
On top of that, two Singapore-based chefs are also named in Black Pearl's 2025 Chef Awards, with the Master Chef Award going to Sebastien Lepinoy from Les Amis – whose restaurant scores the highest rating of three diamonds in this year's Black Pearl ranking; while the Young Chef Award is bagged by Toraik Chua from three-Michelin-starred fusion restaurant Zén.
The Black Pearl Restaurant Guide is helmed by Chinese tech company Meituan, and it's the first international food guide based on Chinese dining standards. See below for the full list of winners from Singapore for 2025.

Michelin Guide Singapore 2025: Two Japanese restaurants win big this year

The Guide has spoken: 288 restaurants in Singapore are worthy of a spot on the coveted list this year, with one restaurant added to the one-star line-up, and another promoted to two-star status. Ahead of this evening's Michelin Guide 2025 awards ceremony in Marina Bay Sands, the Guide first released its Bib Gourmand 2025 picks last week, with 11 new eateries joining the ranks. 2025 marks the ninth year since the Michelin Guide landed in Singapore. And while it's no secret that the F&B industry suffered plenty of closures recently (this year has 32 one-star restaurants compared to 42 last year, mostly due to closures), tonight's ceremony proves once again that our tiny city is still chock-full of culinary giants. Receiving both the Young Chef Award and his first star is Kazuki Arimoto of Omakase @ Stevens, the fine-dining restaurant at Novotel Singapore on Stevens which specialises in omakase with French culinary inflexions. Then there's chef-owner Yoshio Sakuta of Sushi Sakuta, who walks down the carpet teary-eyed to receive his shiny new two-Michelin-star plaque – a bump from his one-star award last year. The intimate 10-seater restaurant offers a seasonal omakase menu exclusively serving Japanese fish, and demonstrates precision in using two varieties of Japanese rice and five types of sushi vinegar. New entries aside, most of the list remains the same, with the Michelin three-star category dominated by three familiar names in the fine-dining scene. You guessed it – once again, French restaurants Les Amis and Odette, as well as contemporary European restaurant Zén remain snug in the watertight three-star zone. This is Odette's seventh consecutive year receiving three stars and Les Amis' sixth. Meanwhile, Singapore's two Michelin Green Star awardees retain their titles – contemporary Southeast Asian Fiz and Seroja continue to go above and beyond in their efforts to source for sustainable ingredients, conserve energy and reduce food waste. They also deliver big on flavour and are consistent picks on our Time Out Singapore 50 best restaurants list. All in all, Singapore now has a whopping 288 establishments on the Michelin Guide, including three three-stars, seven two-stars, thirty-two one-star, 89 Bib Gourmand, two Green stars and 157 Michelin Selected venues. Pirates of the Caribbean fans are realising 'dark' secret about Jack Sparrow

Even though it's been years since the movie franchise came to an end, Pirates of the Caribbean fans are only just discovering a very "dark" secret about Captain Jack Sparrow If you've ever watched Disney's five part movie franchise Pirates of the Caribbean, you'll be familiar with Captain Jack Sparrow, played by Johnny Depp. The first movie, called Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, follows pirate Jack Sparrow and the blacksmith Will Turner, played by Orlando Bloom, as they attempt to rescue the kidnapped Elizabeth Swann, portrayed by Keira Knightley. After premiering in 2003, the film was a massive box-office success where it grossed $654.3 million (£480.5 million) worldwide. ‌ Since then, four more movies were released in the franchise, with stars now teasing that a sixth movie might be in the works. ‌ Despite it having been over 22 years since the first movie was released, fans are just learning the reason why Jack became a pirate and the Captain of the Black Pearl ship. In a deleted scene from the third movie, called Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End, Jack is seen speaking to Lord Cutler Beckett, who is the chairman of the East India Trading Company and is on a mission to eliminate piracy. During the scene, it becomes apparent that Jack had once worked for Lord Beckett, as he expresses his disappointment in Jack. ‌ "We had a deal, Jack," Lord Beckett said to the pirate. "I contracted you to deliver cargo on my behalf. You chose to liberate it." To this, Jack coldly replied: "People aren't cargo, mate." "Your good deed cost me, Jack," Lord Beckett replied, to which Jack said: "And you have spared me any possibility of ending up as anything other than what I am." This deleted scene was discussed on the Sunday Cooltee podcast, where the hosts went on to explain how this had to do with the reason the Black Pearl became cursed. ‌ "The whole reason that Jack Sparrow's ship was black," one of the hosts, named Andy, started. He went on to mention the deleted scene in question, where it becomes apparent that Jack had freed the slaves he was ordered to 'deliver' to Lord Beckett. "Apparently, Jack Sparrow worked for the East India Trading Company forever ago, and the Black Pearl was given to him under contract from Beckett to be running goods from these places," he said, before explaining how one of cargos he'd been assigned were slaves. ‌ Jack went on to free all the slaves, using the Black Pearl which wasn't black at the time. Beckett then catches up with Jack and lights the Black Pearl on fire, making it burn down and sink. "And so he literally lost his ship, turned to pirating because he freed slaves," the podcast host explained. This later lead to Jack having to make a deal with Davey Jones to bring his ship back. "And that's why also people are terrified when they see the Black Pearl. Because it shouldn't exist," another co-host named Joshua said. People were amazed to learn this unknown detail of the backstory, and many fans were quick to wonder why the scene wasn't in the original version. "This story would make great prequel," one person commented, while a second person said: "He became a pirate through a good deed." "I still can't believe we were robbed of this," a third person added. Another person also shared: "Also why Jones makes Sparrows life worth 100 souls as that's roughly how many slaves he freed."
