
After Air India crash preliminary report, MoS Civil Aviation says, ‘Probe ongoing, should not arrive at any conclusion'
He also said the aviation ministry is not interfering with the ongoing investigation led by the AAIB, which is an autonomous authority.
'This is a preliminary report and not the final one. All the information is out for the public. It is still under the purview of investigation so it would not be right to comment on the matter. I request everyone to not arrive at any conclusion till the final report is out,' Mohol said, speaking to reporters on Saturday.

The preliminary probe report said that the Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft's engine fuel control switches transitioned from 'RUN' to 'CUTOFF' position within a second of each other moments after lift-off. Preliminary reports are typically extremely sketchy and present bare bone facts, without typically getting into the actual causes of the accident.
The Ahmedabad-London Gatwick Air India plane accident is one of the worst aviation disasters involving an Indian airline in the last four decades. It killed 260 people—241 of the 242 people on board the ill-fated aircraft and 19 on the ground.
'The blackbox was secured a day after the crash. It didn't have to be sent anywhere else. It was decoded and the data was retreived in India itself. Previously, blackbox from even a chopper crash needed to be sent out of the country,' Mohol added, crediting the advanced lab technology being used in the investigation. He also mentioned that this allowed for the release of the probe report just a month after the crash.
According to the initial probe report, one of the pilots can be heard on the cockpit voice recorder asking the other why he cut off the fuel, to which the other pilot responded by saying that he did not.
On this, Mohol said: 'The conversation has been revealed, but it cannot be used to jump to conclusions. What happened, what was the situation, and what were the reasons — all will become clear post the final report.'
The pilot flying was co-pilot Clive Kunder, while pilot-in-command Sumeet Sabharwal was pilot monitoring for this flight.

Ex-pilot points to chip fault, not pilot error in report on AI171 crash
A report released by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau following the fatal crash of Air India flight AI171 indicated a chip malfunction as a cause of the crash, a former pilot told Reuters on Saturday. The AI 171 crash of the Boeing Dreamliner 787-8 aircraft in Gujarat's Ahmedabad killed 260 people, including 229 passengers, 12 crew members, and 19 people on the ground. Senior lecturer at Buckinghamshire New University and former pilot Marco Chan said that although the report did not explicitly exonerate the two pilots from human error, the chances of accidentally switching the fuel cut-off toggle would be "close to zero". The preliminary report, released on July 12, depicted confusion in the cockpit shortly before the jetliner crashed and killed 260 people last month, after the plane's engine fuel cutoff switches flipped almost simultaneously and starved the engines of fuel. He explained that the thermal cycle being in a warm condition could have caused the signal to not be contacted properly. "Once you lose contact, it's kind of like how electricity works; the signal is not contacted properly. It's because the thermal cycle is in a warm condition," Chan said. The former pilot further elaborated that the system may have stopped functioning due to excessive workload, similar to a laptop shutting down. "It's been working very hard, like your laptop stops working, basically giving you the blue screen of death and Windows," the former pilot added. During the interview with Reuters, the former pilot pointed out that the fuel control unit (FU) failed to receive a command to stay in a run position, resulting in a brief interruption in fuel supply. "It doesn't command the FU to be in a run position even for a split second. The fuel stopped for a couple of seconds, and the engine will start decelerating," the former pilot explained. Raising key questions about the Air India AI171 crash, highlighting two main areas of investigation. Chan said the investigation should focus on whether Air India carried out necessary maintenance and replacement of certain chips in accordance with the Service Bulletin. "I would say now this spotlight would be on, first of all, whether Air India has carried out the necessary maintenance and replacement of those chips according to the Service Bulletin," Marco Chan added. The former pilot further emphasised the need to investigate the nature of the bulletin issued by GE Aviation (previously known as General Electric) and its partner, Bowen. "The second question will likely be for Bowen and General Electric together, why it was issued as a surface bulletin rather than an airworthiness kind of mandate, where a directive or call that you must carry out those actions," he added.

Air India Crash: How US Golden Chassis Helped Recover 49-Hour Flight Data, 2-Hour Audio
Last Updated: The Air India-171 crash report was released on Saturday, revealing the cause of the crash on June 12. A Golden Chassis from the United States played a key role in downloading 49 hours of flight data from one of the black boxes of the ill-fated Air India-171 plane, which crashed on June 12, killing all but one on board. After the crash in Ahmedabad, the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) retrieved two black boxes and brought them to New Delhi on June 24 for decoding purposes. Usually, to get data from damaged flight recorders, investigators borrow a 'Golden Chassis" and the needed download cables from other agencies that handle air crash investigations. In the ongoing investigation, AAIB said on Saturday that the Golden Chassis, or the identical EAFR unit, and download cables, which were needed to download data from Enhanced Airborne Flight Recorders (EAFRs) were sourced from the US National Transport Safety Board (NTSB). The data download from the front EAFR was tried at the AAIB Lab in the national capital on June 24. The Crash Protection Module (CPM) was taken out of the forward EAFR and was found to be in good condition. 'The CPM was mounted on the Golden Chassis, and the raw data was downloaded from the EAFR. The downloaded flight data contained approximately 49 hours of flight data and 6 flights, including the event flight. The recovered audio was two hours in length and captured the event. Initial Analysis of the recorded audio and flight data has been done," AAIB said in its preliminary probe report released yesterday. The report said that the aft EAFR was significantly damaged and could not be downloaded using conventional methods. The CPM was opened to check out the memory card, which suffered extensive damage. Meanwhile, Sanjay Kumar Singh has been named the Investigator-in-Charge, and Jasbir Singh Larhga is the Chief Investigator. Vipin Venu Varakoth, Veeraragavan K, and Vaishnav Vijayakumar are part of the investigation team. To support the investigation, experts in flying, aircraft engineering, aviation medicine, aviation psychology, and flight recorder analysis have also been brought in.
