Golden State Warriors and Jonathan Kuminga reportedly back in contract talks
According to ESPN's Anthony Slater, conversations between the Warriors and Kuminga's representation have been renewed in recent days. Nevertheless, there's still no guarantee that those discussions will result in an agreement between the Warriors and their former lottery pick.
'Well, there's been renewed conversations between the two sides,' Anthony Slater said via a recent episode of ESPN's 'NBA Today.' 'There's dialogue, but as you all know, talking doesn't necessarily equal movement. They've shared contract concepts and opinions about the whole thing between each other this last week, dating back to last weekend. Kuminga wants more of a player-friendly deal, more of a signal that he's a building block, not a trade asset.'
Sooner or later, Kuminga and the Warriors will need to find a middle ground. Whether that means Golden State offers him a contract that fulfils some of his current wishes, they move him in a sign-and-trade or he signs his qualifying offer, remains to be seen. But the current stalemate has hung over the franchise all summer. There has to be an inflection point for the franchise, so they can move forward with their preparations for next season.
The hope, of course, is that Kuminga re-signs with the Warriors and can make an impact next season. But after a summer of testing the waters elsewhere, his long-term tenure in the Bay Area is far from guaranteed.

MENLO PARK, Calif. — The Golden State Warriors are the only NBA team not to make a single move this offseason, but Stephen Curry isn't worried. At his ninth annual Curry Camp, the Warriors' star guard detailed to reporters why he remains confident. 'My confidence has been built on the identity we were able to create over the last third of the regular season last year. You know, the playoff journey,' Curry said in response to the Warriors' lack of offseason movement. 'We have a really good team, and we do know we need some pieces to help take us to the next level.' After acquiring Jimmy Butler at the 2025 trade deadline, the Warriors went 23-7 with Butler on the floor to end the regular season. In the playoffs, they advanced to the second round, where they fell in five games to the Minnesota Timberwolves after Curry suffered a Grade 1 hamstring strain. At his camp on Thursday, Curry also made it clear that Butler, Draymond Green, and the veterans on the Dubs' roster will be ready this season, regardless of what happens. 'I think the veteran presence that we have — me, Jimmy [Butler], Draymond [Green] — we understand how to prepare through that uncertainty and be able to hit the ground running at training camp, knowing you should have some movement by then.' This summer, the Warriors have had a lot of uncertainty surrounding Jonathan Kuminga. Although there is still a lot of unknowns in the matter, Curry acknowledged that it has not impacted his thinking or preparation for the upcoming 2025-26 season. 'You control what you can control,' Curry stated. 'And no matter how many new experiences you have or whatever the differences of this offseason versus previous ones, you don't let it affect your own personal preparation for the season.' The Warriors still have plenty of work to do before training camp. The Kuminga situation remains a mystery, and several notable potential free-agent signings still find themselves in a holding pattern as a result. Al Horford and De'Anthony Melton are among the key players Golden State is expected to sign after Kuminga's holdout ends. Until then, the Dubs remain stuck in their holding pattern, which has led to zero offseason movement from the organization. The Warriors will begin training camp on September 29, giving them about six weeks to figure out their roster. Sengun and the Rockets found themselves down 3-1 in the series this year before clawing their way back and forcing a Game 7, only to get blown out in front of their home fans. A chronicled history Perhaps no one player in NBA history has tortured a franchise the way Stephen Curry has the Houston Rockets over the course of his career. Curry first matched up with the Rockets in the playoffs a decade ago, gentleman's sweeping them in the 2015 Western Conference Finals en route to his first championship, and he went on to eliminate Houston in 2016, 2018, 2019, and most recently this past season in 2025. The latest heartbreak may very well have been what motivated the Rockets to push their chips to the center of the table and acquire Durant, who helped send them home in the 2018 Western Conference Finals when he too was a member of the Warriors. Houston is hoping that with Durant in the fold, they will be able to end their 10-year long nightmare and raise an NBA championship trophy for the first time since 1995.
