Wrexham close in on £8m deal for Man City star in latest transfer statement

Daily Mirror2 days ago
Wrexham have invested heavily this summer as they attempt to retain a place in the Championship and now look set to sign one of Manchester City's brightest stars
Wrexham are reportedly closing in on a stunning deal for Manchester City defender Callum Doyle as their summer recruitment drive continues. The Welsh club have splashed the cash this summer following their promotion to the Championship.

Wrexham have already spent around £20m throughout the window, while they have also smashed the club record transfer with a £7.5m deal for Ipswich's Nathan Broadhead. But it appears that they aren't quite finished there.

The Athletic report that the Championship side are now closing in on a £8m swoop for Man City youngster Callum Doyle. He also has interest from Rangers and Sheffield United but Wrexham appear to have won the race for his services.

Doyle, 21, is a product of City's academy having been at the club throughout his youth career. But he has made just two senior appearances for the side.
He has had more luck out on loan though. He helped Sunderland to promotion in 2022, and then reached the Championship playoff final the following season with Coventry.
The defender then joined Leicester, winning the Championship, while he spent last season on loan with Norwich City. Speaking earlier this summer, he admitted that he was ready for pastures new.
"I think (a permanent move) is the next aim for me," Doyle told the Pink Un. "It's my fourth loan now, and I've been all over the country.
"I've got nothing to say bad about this club. I love it. I've loved playing here and at Carrow Road. The fans are great, so you never know (about a return). It just depends on what happens in the summer, to be honest."

Meanwhile, Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson has revealed that he is still keen to welcome a few more new faces to the Racecourse Ground ahead of next month's deadline. He said: 'We're looking across the board. We probably do need a couple more players, we're looking at that.
"It's ongoing, it's obviously busy for all managers and clubs at the moment when you're preparing for games and looking to improve the squad. The lads we've brought in at the moment are really good and I'm pleased with the way they've settled in."
Wrexham have lost each of their opening two Championship games. They were dramatically beaten by Southampton late on before falling to defeat to Norwich City. They will continue their search for their first win of the campaign this weekend as they host crisis club Sheffield Wednesday.

Former McLaren driver predicts Piastri-Norris crash in title clash

Juan Pablo Montoya, a former McLaren driver, predicts an "explosion" within the team as Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris battle for the 2025 F1 world championship. Piastri currently leads Norris by nine points with 10 races remaining in the season, which resumes next week with the Dutch Grand Prix. Despite their respectful rivalry and only one collision so far, Montoya believes the high stakes of the championship will inevitably lead to a crash between the teammates. Montoya suggests that as the season progresses and points become critical, drivers might resort to extreme measures to secure the championship. He also highlights that the upcoming regulation changes for next year mean this could be the only opportunity for either driver to win a world championship, intensifying the pressure.

Tottenham remain interested in Savinho after missing out on Eberechi Eze

Tottenham have swiftly moved on to different targets after they missed out on Eberechi Eze and remain interested in the potential signing of Manchester City's Savinho, the PA news agency understands. Spurs were all set to capture Eze after they reached an agreement with Crystal Palace on Wednesday for a £60million plus £7.5m in adds-on deal until Arsenal swooped in to hijack the transfer of the England international. Advertisement Eze would have filled the creative void at Tottenham left by James Maddison, who is set to miss the rest of the season after he ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee earlier this month, but Thomas Frank must now shift focus elsewhere. Intensity 🆙 💪 @BetMGMUK — Tottenham Hotspur (@SpursOfficial) August 20, 2025 Talks were opened between Spurs and Manchester City on August 11 regarding the versatile Savinho, who made 48 appearances and produced 13 assists in his debut campaign at Etihad Stadium. While dialogue cooled as Tottenham explored a big-money move for Eze over the past week, Savinho is still a target for the north London club, PA understands, and reports in Brazil suggest an 80million euros (£69.2m) bid is being prepared. Frank has enjoyed a strong start to life at Spurs, with an impressive Super Cup display in defeat to Paris St Germain followed by a 3-0 victory over Burnley last Saturday but next month will bring the challenge of Champions League football. Advertisement With Maddison out long-term and Dejan Kulusevski (knee) sidelined for the foreseeable future, the Danish coach is in need of attacking reinforcements and talks over Savinho could soon accelerate, especially after Saturday's trip to Man City.
