Govt mulling phased entry into nuclear energy
'Nuclear energy has been identified as a potential technology for providing a clean and stable baseload energy source, supporting the increasing electricity demand and the energy transition from fossil fuel usage.
'The government will focus on a comprehensive assessment of the nation's readiness in terms of policy, technical, institutional, legal, safety, human resource development, economic aspects, and public awareness,' he said in a written parliamentary statement.
He was responding to a question from Datuk Dr Ku Abd Rahman Ku Ismail (PN-Kubang Pasu), who had asked the government to state the current policy on nuclear energy under the National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR).
Fadillah said MyPower has been appointed to act as the Nuclear Energy Programme Implementing Organisation (Nepio) in accordance with the recommendations of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) for countries intending to introduce nuclear for electricity generation.
'MyPower will serve as the main coordinating agency for the development of the national nuclear energy programme, and is currently undertaking various initiatives.'
The initiatives include developing policies and strengthening the legal framework, conducting technical and feasibility studies, and building human resource and institutional capacity.
It also involves enhancing bilateral and multilateral cooperation with countries and international institutions in technology, training, and compliance with international standards, he added.
'The government also emphasises that any final decision regarding the construction of nuclear power plants will only be made once all prerequisites related to safety, technical, policy, and other important considerations are convincingly met,' said Fadillah.
While nuclear energy is not included in the NETR that was launched in 2023, Fadillah said hydrogen technology was identified as a potential technology to be developed under the roadmap.
'However, since the launch of NETR, nuclear energy has been recognised as a potential option to provide a clean, stable and low-carbon baseload energy source, supporting increased electricity demand and efforts to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and greenhouse emissions.
'Nuclear has the potential to support NETR by contributing to energy security, emission reduction, and diversification of the national energy mix by offering a reliable energy source to replace coal plants that will be phased out by 2044.'

Ministry drives water policy for safe, sustainable supply
Innovation at work: Fadillah (second from right) and Nassuruddin (second from left) visiting booths after attending the 2025 JPS Senior Managers and District Engineers Conference in Kota Baru. — Bernama KOTA BARU: The Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (Petra) is committed to strengthening the implementation of the National Water Policy as a driver for transforming the national water sector, ensuring safe, viable and sustainable water supply for the people. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said this effort will not only enhance the security of the country's water resources but also drive Malaysia towards becoming a dynamic water hub with potential contributions to economic development, job creation, and facilitating research and development. 'In this context, the Irrigation and Drainage Department (JPS) plays an important role in strengthening cooperation at the federal, state and local government levels towards integrated water management. 'The transformation of the water sector towards more efficient water management requires an integrated information system to safeguard water security and ensure ecosystem sustainability for a better future,' Fadillah said at an event here, reported Bernama. He was speaking at the 2025 JPS Senior Managers and District Engineers Conference here yesterday, which was also attended by Kelantan Mentri Besar Datuk Mohd Nassuruddin Daud. Fadillah, who is also Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister, said efficient and sustainable water resource management remains one of the main focuses of the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), especially as issues of clean water supply security and changing rainfall patterns due to climate change become increasingly critical. Under Thrust A7 – Strengthening Flood Mitigation and Adaptation – the government emphasises implementing more comprehensive, integrated and innovative strategies to increase the nation's resilience to increasingly complex and high-impact flood disasters. 'As the main technical agency in managing national water resources, Petra hopes JPS will continue to lead in ensuring integrated, sustainable and resilient water resource management in Malaysia. 'JPS is also expected to strengthen its role as a facilitator of the national water policy at the state and district levels so that there are no gaps in planning and implementing water-related projects,' Fadillah added.

Air Kelantan to settle RM61 million electricity arrears to TNB in stages
KOTA BARU: The Kelantan government has acknowledged that Air Kelantan Sdn Bhd (Air Kelantan) owes Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) RM61 million in outstanding electricity bills and will settle the amount in stages. State Infrastructure, Water and Rural Development Committee chairman Datuk Dr Izani Husin said the arrears were partly due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the Movement Control Order, which hindered bill collection, coupled with some residents withholding payment during frequent water supply disruptions. "TNB has met with us to discuss possible solutions, but no agreement has been finalised. "We will discuss further to determine a repayment schedule. With Air Kelantan's improved management, we are confident the debt will be cleared according to the agreed timeline," he told reporters after the weekly state executive council meeting at Kompleks Kota Darulnaim today. He added that Air Kelantan had previously settled older electricity arrears according to schedule, but several districts were found to still have outstanding amounts. Earlier, Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Transition and Water Transformation Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof revealed that Air Kelantan's arrears with TNB had reached about RM61 million as of June 30.
