India will soon have its own satellites to monitor spy satellites. How the technology works

'India will be focusing on improving its presence in space in the coming years. This initiative will be a part of that larger aim,' a senior ISRO official said.
The project being undertaken by the Defence Ministry, which is in the process of being finalised, will have 'satellite mapping' capabilities and will be fully made in India, senior officials from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) told ThePrint.
New Delhi: Spy satellites to monitor other spy satellites. India will soon have its own constellation of satellites to keep an eye out for other satellites that might be surveilling India.
This network of satellites will enhance India's space domain awareness and will also help monitor orbital threats in real-time. The project is being overseen under NETRA, a Network for Tracking Space Objects and Analysis, which detects space debris and other hazardous space objects.
The official said that while ISRO will partner with the MoD in overseeing the overall design and monitoring of these satellites, a private Bengaluru-based space start-up, Digantara, has been contracted to deploy these satellites within the next year.
How does satellite mapping work?
The capabilities of monitoring foreign satellites is being acquired by countries including the US, Russia and China.
These satellites have propulsion and guidance systems that utilise factors such as orbital inclinations and altitudes to get information and photographs from a potential target satellite.
Some of these satellites are also capable of intercepting inter-satellite communications and links to ground stations.
Varying versions of such technology are either already deployed or are currently being tested. In 2020, the US Space Command—an agency responsible for tracking all objects in orbit—flagged that the Russian satellite Kosmos 2543 had released an unknown object into space. This was believed to be a test of a new technology that could be used to destroy objects already in orbit.
The Russian satellite released this tech in close proximity to another Russian satellite.
'Space is increasingly becoming a weapon for countries. Battles will no longer be limited to just the ground, but will also be fought in space. And countries need to be ready for it,' the ISRO official said.
Focus on active orbital security
India is already working on increasing its defence capabilities in space.
Its next 'spy satellite programme', space-based surveillance-3 or SBS-3, will launch a constellation of 52 surveillance satellites in the coming two years. Three private space startups, Ananth Technologies, Centum Electronics and Alpha Design Technologies, have joined hands with the government to give shape to this project.
The Rs 27,000 crore project is set to significantly improve India's national security capabilities.

1 2 3 4 Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu announced plans to expand the AP Innovation and Investment Park (APIIP) to accommodate more entrepreneurs, increasing the current capacity from 50 start-ups per year. The expansion aims to enhance the AP Entrepreneurship Development Program, according to an official statement from the Chief Minister's Office. Established in Aug 2020, APIIP serves as the state's primary incubator under the Arunachal Pradesh Start-Up Policy. It organizes annual start-up challenges to identify promising entrepreneurs, providing seed funding and offering nine-month incubation and pre-incubation programs to help them achieve commercial success. In the past four years, APIIP has supported 106 start-ups across three cohorts, distributing over Rs 4.5 crore in seed funding. Notably, 38% of these start-ups are women-led, representing diverse sectors such as agriculture, handicrafts, IT, e-commerce, and tourism. He, along with deputy CM Chowna Mein, awarded graduation certificates to Cohort 3.0 and prize money to Cohort 4.0 start-ups. APIIP also signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with seven educational institutions to establish mentorship programs for new start-ups. These institutions include Arunachal Pradesh University, Pasighat; Arunachal University of Studies, Namsai; Dorjee Khandu Govt College, Tawang; Dera Natung Govt College, Itanagar; NERIST, Nirjuli; NIT, Jote; and Rajiv Gandhi University, Doimukh. Davangere/DHNS: Vehicle users in Davangere are gradually switching over to greener mode of transport. For, in the last three years, there has been a significant rise in registration of electric vehicles (EVs) in the district. According to the officials of Regional Transport department, as many as 8,153 electric vehicles were registered in the district from 2022 to August 2025. The district recorded 848 electric vehicles in 2022 - of them 833 were electric scooters and 15 were electric electric vehicles are cost-effective when compared to fuel-driven vehicles, the number of people opting for e-vehicles has gone up in the district. In 2023, a total of 2,392 electric scooters and 55 cars were registered. Similarly, as many as 2,796 EV scooters and 94 cars were registered in 2024 and about 1,845 scooters and 124 cars were registered in 2025 until August. Speaking to DH, Regional Transport Officer H S Bhagavan Das said that people are keen to buy electric vehicles as they are cost-effective and generally produce less pollution than gasoline or diesel cars, particularly in terms of tailpipe EVs themselves have zero tailpipe emissions as they don't release pollutants directly into the air. Besides, EV vehicle owners need not spend much on maintenance in terms of changing engine oil as in the case of traditional considering the number of electric vehicles, the charging points are very minimal in the city. Except for the one run by Bescom at Ambedkar Circle, the charging points are limited in the city. Speaking to DH, Dhananjay, who owns EV car said 'I charge my car near my household. When I need it fast, I visit the recharge station and it would take about one hour and the fare is around Rs 300.'It had been decided to set up charging points at a total of 21 places in Davangere district under public-private-partnership model. A proposal has already been submitted to the government to set up the stations at government-owned, currently vacant 30X40-area sites such as the deputy commissioner's office, taluk office, zilla panchayat, mini Vidhana Soudha, general hospital and bus terminals. These stations with a capacity of 90 KW will operate 24 hours a day. To keep it functional round-the-clock, it is planned to ensure continuous electricity supply. 'As per the government's instructions, 21 places have been identified in the district to conduct a survey and to set up charging points. The construction work of these will be taken up after the government's further orders,' Bescom Executive Engineer A K Thippeswamy told DH.'Bescom is operating a charging station on an experimental basis near Ambedkar Circle. The users have to download EV app on their mobile phone and scan the code for charging the vehicle. They have to pay fare via digital payment. It is not being operated manually, however,' he added. He further said that it was decided to set up charging points on the premises of 12 Indian Oil Corporation Limited fuel stations in the city. Of them, only five have paid the fee to Bescom to set up the infrastructure.
