
India will soon have its own satellites to monitor spy satellites. How the technology works
'India will be focusing on improving its presence in space in the coming years. This initiative will be a part of that larger aim,' a senior ISRO official said.
The project being undertaken by the Defence Ministry, which is in the process of being finalised, will have 'satellite mapping' capabilities and will be fully made in India, senior officials from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) told ThePrint.
New Delhi: Spy satellites to monitor other spy satellites. India will soon have its own constellation of satellites to keep an eye out for other satellites that might be surveilling India.
This network of satellites will enhance India's space domain awareness and will also help monitor orbital threats in real-time. The project is being overseen under NETRA, a Network for Tracking Space Objects and Analysis, which detects space debris and other hazardous space objects.
The official said that while ISRO will partner with the MoD in overseeing the overall design and monitoring of these satellites, a private Bengaluru-based space start-up, Digantara, has been contracted to deploy these satellites within the next year.
How does satellite mapping work?
The capabilities of monitoring foreign satellites is being acquired by countries including the US, Russia and China.
These satellites have propulsion and guidance systems that utilise factors such as orbital inclinations and altitudes to get information and photographs from a potential target satellite.
Some of these satellites are also capable of intercepting inter-satellite communications and links to ground stations.
Varying versions of such technology are either already deployed or are currently being tested. In 2020, the US Space Command—an agency responsible for tracking all objects in orbit—flagged that the Russian satellite Kosmos 2543 had released an unknown object into space. This was believed to be a test of a new technology that could be used to destroy objects already in orbit.
The Russian satellite released this tech in close proximity to another Russian satellite.
'Space is increasingly becoming a weapon for countries. Battles will no longer be limited to just the ground, but will also be fought in space. And countries need to be ready for it,' the ISRO official said.
Focus on active orbital security
India is already working on increasing its defence capabilities in space.
Its next 'spy satellite programme', space-based surveillance-3 or SBS-3, will launch a constellation of 52 surveillance satellites in the coming two years. Three private space startups, Ananth Technologies, Centum Electronics and Alpha Design Technologies, have joined hands with the government to give shape to this project.
The Rs 27,000 crore project is set to significantly improve India's national security capabilities.

One particular fraud alone caused a loss of around Rs 50 crore," he said. Anaskar said most cooperative and rural banks are ill-equipped to build robust cyber defence infrastructure. He emphasised that the C-SOC's services will be provided free of cost to member banks. "This is a cooperative initiative in its true spirit. We will not charge anything for providing 24/7 surveillance and protection," Anaskar said. The C-SOC, which was inaugurated on Friday, is designed to serve 31 district central cooperative banks in Maharashtra. The system, powered by an AI-driven platform , is capable of detecting known and emerging cyber threats in real time and issuing immediate alerts to participating banks. Anaskar said the centre recently helped avert a major cyber breach at a cooperative bank in Sindhudurg. "We issued an early warning to the bank, and the funds were secured in time," he said. The facility is currently manned by 35 trained cyber-security professionals working in shifts to ensure round-the-clock operation. MSC Bank also plans to offer cyber hygiene training to officials and staff of member banks to improve awareness and preparedness against online threats. Anaskar said the initiative is a forward-looking step for the entire cooperative sector and is expected to serve as a model for other states. "With increasing reliance on digital platforms and the rise of AI, such infrastructure is not optional anymore. It is a necessity," he added.

Taiwan adds China's Huawei, SMIC to export control list
Taiwan's government has added China's Huawei Technologies and Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC) to its export control list, which includes other proscribed organisations like the Taliban and al Qaeda. Inclusion on the economy ministry's trade administration's strategic high-tech commodities entity list means Taiwanese companies will need government approval before exporting any products to the companies. The companies were included in an updated version of the ministry's trade administration's website late on Saturday. Neither company nor the economy ministry immediately responded to requests for comment outside of office hours at the weekend. Taiwan is home to TSMC , the world's largest contract chipmaker and a major supplier of chips to AI darling Nvidia. Both Huawei and SMIC have been working hard to catch up in the chip technology race. Taiwan, which China claims as its own territory despite the strong objections of Taipei's government, already has tight chip export controls when it comes to Taiwanese companies either manufacturing in the country or supplying Chinese firms. Huawei, which is at the centre of China's AI ambitions, is on a U.S. Commerce Department trade list that essentially bars it from receiving US goods and technology, as well as foreign-made goods such as chips from companies like TSMC made with US technology. Last October, TechInsights, a Canadian tech research firm, took apart Huawei's 910B AI processor and found a TSMC chip in it. The multi-chip 910B is viewed as the most advanced AI accelerator mass-produced by a Chinese company. TSMC suspended shipments to China-based chip designer Sophgo, whose chip matched the one in the Huawei 910B and, in November the US Commerce Department ordered TSMC to halt shipments of more chips to Chinese customers. Taiwan's government has also repeatedly vowed to crack down on what it says are efforts by Chinese companies, including SMIC, to steal technology and entice chip talent away from the island. SMIC is China's largest chipmaker and has ramped up investment to expand production capacity and strengthen China's domestic semiconductor capability in the face of sweeping US export controls.
