Gilbert Burns: Logan Storley's win over Joaquin Buckley shows Kamaru Usman the way
Gilbert Burns advises Kamaru Usman to follow a similar game plan against Joaquin Buckley as their Kill Cliff FC teammate.
Former UFC welterweight champion Usman (20-4 MMA, 15-3 UFC) will look to snap a three-fight losing skid when he takes on Buckley (21-6 MMA, 11-4 UFC) in Saturday's UFC on ESPN 69 (ESPN, ESPN+) main event at State Farm Arena in Atlanta.
Buckley is unbeaten since dropping back down to welterweight in May 2023. The last time Buckley lost at 170 pounds was against Logan Storley in April 2018, which led to his move up to middleweight. Burns advises Usman to use a heavy grapple approach just like Storley did when he stifled Buckley on the ground.
"I want Kamaru to win," Burns said on his "Show Me The Money" podcast. "The guy was at the gym – he was looking very good. At the gym, we had one of the guys that smashed Buckley back in the day. It was a long time ago at Bellator. Logan Storley just outwrestled him, ground-and-pounded him. It shows Kamaru the way. I think Kamaru has to mix it up. I think he was the best at the time when he was mixing it up. Not just striking. I kind of called that he was going to lose to Leon (Edwards).
"At that time, he wasn't wrestling anymore. He just stood up with Leon, and I knew it was going to be hard. Whenever he mixes it up – sometimes he'll wrestle not just to wrestle, (but) wrestle just to make this guy think about it and then strike better, get loose. Take this guy down, make this guy tired. Buckley is very muscular, very strong. If Buckley starts putting pressure, Buckley is very, very dangerous. I think the way for Kamaru is to put pressure. I hope he wins, and I think he can."
Burns fought Usman for the welterweight title in February 2021 in what was an emotional fight between teammates. After stunning Usman in Round 1, Burns was ultimately finished by TKO in Round 3 at UFC 258.

She missed a preseason game with a minor quad problem that, it turns out, should have been a red flag--Clark has not been healthy for a significant stretch of this WNBA season since. She played the first week of the WNBA season, then missed three weeks. Clark played for 10 days, then missed two more weeks. Finally, Clark came back for a week in early July, just before Indiana was to host the WNBA All-Star game, and got injured again. This time, it is her right groin that is the problem, and it's been a full four weeks since she last took the floor. Still, Clark--who had never missed a game in the WNBA or in college before this season-- has tried to stay engaged with her teammates and, perhaps more important, with the fans. That was again the case on Tuesday when the Fever played Dallas at home, a game televised on ESPN. Clark was still in civvies, but ESPN highlighted her before the game, putting in her time with fans signing autographs. "Caitlin Clark is for the fans," the post read. Caitlin Clark: 'I Do Feel This Responsibility' That's been important for Clark throughout her injury ordeal this season. She has appeared in only 13 games, but she understands that, for better or worse, she is the face of the new WNBA and a big part of the reason attention on the league has surged. It may be unfair, but Clark has graciously said she has an obligation to do what she can for fans who paid to see her play, not to sit in street clothes. "It's hard, because obviously I do feel this responsibility of being out there and playing," Clark told Sue Bird on her "Bird's Eye View" podcast. Clark explained, she does not think the WNBA revolves around her, but that she does feel she wants to give paying customers a show: "And not that I think there's a fear of any of this going away. That doesn't happen when like, LeBron or Steph get hurt. [Fans] are always going to be there. But you do want to play, you want to give people something to cheer about or scream about." There is no timetable for Clark's return, though the team has been upbeat about the possibility. Still, there are now only 11 games on the Fever's remaining slate, meaning there is a distinct possibility Clark will not play again this year.
