‘Tehran will burn': Israel's defence minister's stern warning to Iran as attacks continue
Iran-Israel conflict: Amid the deadly escalation between the two countries that also killed head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hossein Salami, Israel's Defense Minister issued a stern warning declaring that 'Tehran will burn' if Iran continues launching missile attacks on Israel.
"If (Iranian Supreme leader Ayatollah Ali) Khamenei continues to fire missiles at the Israeli home front — Tehran will burn,' Israel's defense minister Katz said after an assessment meeting with the army's chief of staff, reported The Associated Press. The Israeli Defence's warning comes after the nation, on Saturday, June 13 launched airstrikes against Iran's military targets and nuclear program, as well as targeting scientists and generals. Explosions were seen and heard in the capital city, Tehran.
Iran retaliated by launching waves of drones and ballistic missiles at Israel, where explosions lit the night skies over Jerusalem and Tel Aviv and shook the buildings below.
Israel's army said Saturday it killed nine senior scientists and experts involved in Iran's nuclear project. The attacks left 78 people dead and over 320 others injured, said Iran's UN ambassador.
Israel's assault involved warplanes — as well as drones smuggled into the country in advance, according to officials — to hit key facilities and kill the top generals and scientists, reported the AP.
Israel's attacks have now cast a sense of doubt on the nuclear talks between the US and Iran, which was scheduled for Sunday in Oman. Following the attacks, Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson called any further nuclear talks with the US 'meaningless,' according to state television.
Iran and Israel — long-term adversaries, have, for decades been locked in shadow conflict that shaped Middle Eastern geopolitics. Though both countries have avoided a full-blown war, the nations have frequently targeted each other through covert operations and, in Iran's case, via proxy groups.
The escalation happened after Israel engaged in a war with Hamas, impounding Gaza and Palestinians in the process.

World of wars and bonfire of G7 vanities
A week is indeed a long time in geopolitics. On Tuesday, the world markets celebrated headlines about a trade deal between China and the US. On Friday, world markets plummeted following Israeli strikes on Iran. Real wars tend to make trade wars look insignificant. This week, the G7, the group of advanced economies, is observing the 50th anniversary of its origin in picturesque Kananaskis in Alberta, at the foothills of the Canadian Rockies. The theme, as always, is lofty: international peace and security, global economic stability and growth, digital transition and global challenges. The ground realities mock at the ballyhooed heft of advanced economies to sustain predictability and stability. Global trade is upended, thanks to Donald J Trump's America First tariff policies. Sure, there is a ceasefire on tariffs, a détente with China and talks about talks with other countries. Peace is in pieces. Trump's promise of peace in 24 hours is consigned to the bunker by Russian President Vladimir Putin. The ceasefire-for-hostages deal in Gaza is comatose. Newly 'liberated' Syria is haunted by sectarian killings despite a relief on sanctions—US Secretary of State Marco Rubio warned the country is weeks away from an epic civil war. On Wednesday, after US declared the 'end of bombing', the Houthis warned of attacks. This week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu upped the ante as he authorised Israeli forces to attack Iran. With it, Trump's agenda in West Asia—and a possible Nobel honour—was washed off. In a sequence of complex manoeuvres, Israeli forces targeted the leadership of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, nuclear scientists, military units and nuclear facilities. The sequence is instructive. The audacious attacks were executed just before officials from Iran and the US were to meet in Oman over a new nuclear deal. The US president authorised the talks for the new deal and gave a deadline of 60 days; the 2015 nuclear deal between Iran and six countries including the US took 20 months.

Israeli military attack hits Yemen, reportedly targeting senior Houthi leader
Israeli forces recently carried out a targeted strike in Yemen, in an apparent assassination attempt against a senior figure in the Iran-backed Houthi movement, according to Israeli media. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have not officially confirmed the operation, and both Israeli and Houthi officials have so far refrained from making public statements on the Houthis, who control large parts of northern Yemen, have been engaged in a campaign of maritime attacks in the Red Sea since November 2023, claiming solidarity with Palestinians amid the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas in Gaza. The group is believed to have launched over 100 assaults on commercial vessels traversing one of the world's key shipping TENSIONS BETWEEN ISRAEL AND IRANThe reported strike in Yemen comes as Israel and Iran exchanged fresh hostilities late Saturday, escalating fears of a broader regional conflict. The Israeli military expanded its campaign against Iran with a surprise strike targeting the South Pars gas field, the world's largest, prompting a fierce response from Tehran. Iran launched missiles and drones toward Israel, according to Iranian state media, while the IDF confirmed it had intercepted multiple incoming projectiles and was continuing operations against military targets in Tehran. Missile strikes lit up the night skies over Jerusalem and Haifa, where a direct hit on a residential building killed a woman in her 20s and injured at least 13 canceled a scheduled round of nuclear talks with the United States in Oman. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi said the discussions were impossible amid what he called "barbarous" Israeli Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned that Iran had "seen nothing yet" and hinted at further action. Meanwhile, the White House said President Donald Trump had cautioned Iran against further escalation, offering a diplomatic off-ramp in exchange for a significant rollback of its nuclear program.
