‘Magazine Dreams' Review: Pain Without Gain
Killian Maddox (Jonathan Majors) has one goal in life: to be the greatest bodybuilder on Earth. His focus is so single-minded that he has little else to talk about. About a third of the way into 'Magazine Dreams,' the shy Killian, having finally worked up the courage to ask, takes Jessie (Haley Bennett), his colleague at a supermarket, on a date.
It doesn't go well. At the restaurant, Killian startles Jessie with his casual disclosure of his mother's violent death. ('Someone killed her. My dad did. He shot her and then he shot himself. That's why they're both dead.') He orders enough protein to feed a platoon. Then he regales her with details of his regimen and his fear that others don't respect him. 'I'm going to place and get my pro card,' he tells Jessie. 'Then I bet they won't just walk by me.'
The too-briefly-seen Bennett has the Cybill Shepherd role in this strained effort to make 'Taxi Driver' for bodybuilders. On the evidence, the writer-director, Elijah Bynum, has also studied Scorsese's other work, particularly 'The King of Comedy' (Killian writes obsessive letters to an idol who has made the cover of Men's Health) and the Steadicam march to the boxing ring in 'Raging Bull.'
Bynum supplies his own version of that shot midway through, when Killian, having just been savagely beaten by a group of men whose store he has wrecked, arrives at a bodybuilding competition still bloody. In a single, fluid camera movement, Killian enters the building and takes the stage, flexing his muscles and visibly struggling to grin through his pain. It's an impressive show of bravado from both the actor and the director, albeit in a way that makes it difficult to tell who's swaggering more — the character or the filmmaker.
'Magazine Dreams' bludgeons viewers to show off its sensitivity. Bynum piles on the misery in increasingly bogus ways. As big as Killian is, he has thin skin from the time a judge told him his deltoids were too small. He's too naïve to realize that posting a video of his training online will invite nasty comments. After he crashes his car, a doctor informs him that he needs surgery. 'I can't have a scar,' Killian replies. 'I'm a bodybuilder. Bodybuilders can't have scars.' Perhaps at a loss as to how to resolve the drama in a less hackneyed manner, Bynum adds guns.
This macho posturing was apparent when 'Magazine Dreams' played in January 2023 at the Sundance Film Festival, where Oscar prognosticators name-checked Majors as an awards contender. Actorly transformations into laconic, bulked-up, emotionally concussed giants are tough to resist. But the movie became damaged goods two months later when Majors was arrested and charged with assaulting and harassing his girlfriend at the time, Grace Jabbari. Majors, who denied the accusations, was found guilty on two of four counts that December and sentenced to probation and a year of domestic violence counseling.
Now 'Magazine Dreams' arrives in theaters much later than originally planned, with a new distributor and some unfortunate real-life echoes. The first significant dialogue is spoken by a counselor (Harriet Sansom Harris), who tells Killian, 'The state has mandated these sessions because they're worried about your aggression.' (In a movie pumped with testosterone, Harris and Bennett are vital presences; Taylour Paige has the only other significant female role, as a prostitute.) Prone to outbursts, Killian has a go-to threat: 'I'm going to split your skull open and drink your brains like soup.'
The line is meant to sound overwrought, but only a screenwriter could be amused.

15 LGBTQ+ Former Disney And Nickelodeon Stars
I don't know about you, but as a Gen Z'er, I spent practically every waking hour of childhood watching TV shows on Disney Channel and Nickelodeon. OK, so maybe not EVERY waking hour, but I watched it as much as I could. And as it turns out, some of our fave stars who we grew up adoring actually ended up coming out as LGBTQ+ long after their time as child stars ended. So it's about time we celebrate them, shall we? Let's go! Gotta start with our girl, Raven-Symoné. She came out as gay publicly in 2013, ten years after That's So Raven first aired. She said she's known since she was 12, though, while she was on the show. Raven got married to her wife, Miranda Pearman-Maday, in 2020! Miley Cyrus, like the absolute icon that she is, came out as pansexual in 2016. She opened up about how she's "always hated the word 'bisexual,'" because she felt it put her "in a box," and also said her first-ever relationship was "with a chick." ALL HAIL THE QUEEEEEN! Demi Lovato is a queer Disney icon, of course, but you might not remember how she came out. In 2015, she confirmed that the banger "Cool For The Summer" was about a relationship with a woman. Eventually, she came out as pansexual in 2021. She came out as nonbinary in 2021, and according to her Instagram bio, she uses both they/them and she/her pronouns. Josie Totah, who you might know from Jessie, came out as trans to the public in 2018 through an article published in Time Magazine called "My Name Is Josie Totah — And I'm Ready to Be Free." In the article, she explains having come out to her family and starting her transition three years before, at age 14. Speaking of Totah's costar Karan Brar, who played Ravi on the show, came out as bisexual in an essay for Teen Vogue in late 2023. Can't forget about my personal fave, Alyson Stoner, the Camp Rock and Suite Life legend. Alyson came out in a 2018 essay for Teen Vogue, saying they're attracted to "people of every gender identity and expression," and also opened up about having to attend gay conversion therapy. Then, a few years later, Alyson revealed they now go by they/them pronouns. Next up, Keke Palmer, who I first saw in the 2007 DCOM Jump In! In 2016, people began speculating she was queer after the music video for her song "I Don't Belong To You" came out (because she's with a woman in the video). She ended up saying, "I don't want to be stuck down to one label." Since then, she has discussed her conflicts with her sexuality growing up, specifically around "overthinking" it, and just wanting to "explore" now. Dove Cameron! You might know her from the titular roles in Liv and Maddie. After being accused of queerbaiting in 2020, Dove came out on an Instagram live and described herself as "super queer." Confession time: I always forget Bella Thorne started on the Disney show Shake It Up alongside Zendaya. Bella came out as bisexual in 2016 on X (then Twitter), but then said she identifies more as pansexual in 2019. OK, so technically Rowan Blanchard came out at the same time her Disney show Girl Meets World was on air — like the icon she is — but I couldn't not add her to this list. In 2016, two years into the show, she came out as queer on X. Garrett Clayton, *that* hunk from Teen Beach Movie (who you might also know from Hairspray Live), announced he was gay in 2018 in an Instagram post. In the same post, he announced he was dating his then-boyfriend, now-husband, writer Blake Knight. How adorable!! I can't forget about Michael Seater — not just because he's a Canadian legend, but also because he starred in one of the greatest Disney shows ever, Life With Derek. Michael Seater (*the* Derek) is queer. Although we don't know too much about his dating life, we celebrate him anyway (and we love a private king). Hayley Kiyoko, who you might know from Lemonade Mouth, came out as queer in 2015 through releasing her song called "Girls Like Girls" — four years after starring in the movie. If that isn't the most badass thing you've ever seen, IDK what is. Hayley has been dating Bachelor contestant Becca Tilley for more than 5 years now! Corey Fogelmanis from Girl Meets World came out as queer in 2020. It was three years after the show ended, and he reportedly made the announcement through an Instagram post for his first LA Pride parade. Last but not least, we have Matthew Scott Montgomery, who starred in So Random! He explained that "no one" in the cast knew at the time, and described his "very, very conservative" parents' reaction to his coming out as a "nightmare." He even agreed to go to conversion therapy afterward. "You're taught that you deserve to be punished all the time," he said. Who's your fave from this list? Know any other child stars who eventually came out as LGBTQ+? Tell me in the comments below! Looking for more LGBTQ+ or Pride content? Then check out all of BuzzFeed's posts celebrating Pride 2025.

Singer Jessie J Reveals 'Worst Day So Far' In Emotional Cancer Journey Update
Jessie J is opening up about the lowest point she has experienced since her breast cancer diagnosis and the unexpected method she used to regain her composure. The "No Secrets" hitmaker is well-known for sharing important details about her life with fans, from welcoming her first child with Chanan Colman to her recent health struggles. Now, she is getting candid about the challenges she faces navigating life with cancer. Jessie J broke the news about her breast cancer diagnosis early this month in an emotional Instagram post. Although she initially declared she would leave the spotlight to undergo treatment, the sensational singer surprised fans days later with a North American Tour announcement. Jessie got candid about her struggles on her Instagram Stories, revealing she experienced a hard time over the weekend. "Had my worst day so far yesterday since my diagnosis and the busiest 3 months I have had in years," she confessed, noting work, cancer, life, and her young son had her mind completely drained. The entertainer's mental state was so bad that she experienced "panic attacks, tears, big fears, anger" and felt overwhelmingly bad until she discovered a shocking way to shift her mood. "And you know what helped?" she concluded her first post before sharing the secret in a follow-up post, writing: "I ate a corn on the cob [corn emoji]. Turns out it's extremely hard to panic or cry while eating one. Highly recommend. Instant [sic] mood shift." Jessie implied in a series of follow-up posts that she wouldn't hide her low moments from fans amid her cancer battle, noting how important it was to her to acknowledge these negative emotions. She stressed that "holding it in won't make it go away" and that it was better to let "fear, anger, sadness, and panic" flow to the surface. Jessie explained: "So when I posted what I did yesterday about my current challenge in life, also while making light of the situation [corn emoji]. That was one day in 10 weeks that I just lost it and was completely drowned in all the negative and bad feelings any cancer journey can bring. Which is healthy and needed." She added in a separate post that she was sharing her stance with fans because several people reached out to her after her corn post to advise her not to drown in negative emotions. Although Jessie accepted these comments as people's way of caring for her, she stressed that her definition of strength stemmed from honesty and acknowledging her feelings. Jessie concluded her message with a vow to be "Strong, fearless, Healthy, and make some jokes" about her situation, traits she first displayed when she announced her cancer diagnosis days earlier. The Blast covered her emotional reveal, reporting that the singer shared a video detailing her health battle on Instagram. In the post, Jessie revealed she was diagnosed with "early" breast cancer in April, shortly before she ended her four-year hiatus from music. She noted it was a wild coincidence that she marked her comeback with the singer "No Secrets," only to keep her health a secret from fans before releasing a second song called "Living My Best Life." Despite her heartbreaking diagnosis, the media personality remained positive, focusing on the early detection of her breast cancer and how she planned to undergo surgery to treat the condition. Jessie's humor stayed alive throughout the video, joking about the operation being "a very dramatic way to get a boob job." Jessie added that she would need to leave the spotlight to undergo treatment but promised to return with "massive t-ts and more music." She continued joking about her situation in the post's caption, asking fans if it was "too soon to do a remix called 'Living my breast life'?" Despite her playful take on her cancer diagnosis, Jessie acknowledged the severity of her situation and asked fans for a hug. Although her followers could not shower her with affection, they expressed their feelings in the comment section. Many applauded her for being vocal about her struggles, while others wished her a speedy recovery and the best of health. The prayers and well wishes might have worked, as Jessie shocked fans by announcing her plans for a North American Tour just days later. Jessie proved she planned on keeping her vow to return to music after her breast cancer surgery by announcing an intimate run of North American acoustic shows scheduled for November. The project, titled the "No Secrets Tour," will see the singer visiting seven American cities over a two-week period. The British singer shall start the tour in the US before traveling to Canada for a performance and concluding the tour in Phoenix. Jessie's first show shall be in Atlanta, GA, on November 5 at the Center Stage Theater. Then, she would perform at the Howard Theatre in Washington, D.C., on November 7. The listing continued with shows in Philadelphia and New York before Jessie took the tour to Canada for a performance at Toronto's Danforth Music Hall on November 12. She would return to the US on November 14 to perform in Chicago and wrap things up by November 19 at The Van Buren in Phoenix, per Exclaim! Wishing Jessie J all the strength required to weather this storm!

Jessie J experienced 'discomfort' during concert after undergoing 'five breast biopsies'
Jessie J pushed through with a gig in April despite experiencing "discomfort" after undergoing "five breast biopsies". The Price Tag singer, who announced her breast cancer diagnosis earlier this week, shared a clip from her performance at Ronnie Scott's jazz club in London in April and revealed that her set took place the day after she had undergone several biopsies. "I had 5 breast biopsies the night before this show," the 37-year-old captioned the Instagram post. "I was in some discomfort but so hyped to do it and I didn't want to cancel." In the video, Jessie chats with the audience and makes a series of jokes, including one about her "huge perfect t*ts". She admitted in the caption that she was struggling to keep her health news to herself during those exchanges. "The more I watch this show back I can see my brain working in complete overdrive trying not to blurt it all out," she continued. "Laughing and making jokes in hard times (handshake emoji) me." The Domino hitmaker announced on Wednesday that she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and would undergo surgery after her performance at the Capital FM Summertime Ball on Sunday 15 June. "I was diagnosed with early breast cancer," she told her followers. "Cancer sucks in any form, but I'm holding on to the word 'early'. I have been in and out of tests throughout this whole period." She then made a light-hearted joke, quipping, "It's a very dramatic way to get a boob job... I will come back with massive t*ts and more music." Jessie clarified in the caption, "Also not getting massive t*ts. Or am I? No no... I must stop joking."
