BMW X3 named 2025 South African Car of the Year
BMW has taken top honours in the 2025 South African Car of the Year awards, with its X3 SUV securing the overall title.
Judged by a panel of local motoring journalists over two days of rigorous testing in March, the X3 edged ahead of a strong field to claim the win — the first time this particular model has earned the distinction.
The win also marks back-to-back victories for the German manufacturer, which walked away with the 2024 title for its flagship 7 Series. BMW now extends its record as the most awarded brand in the competition's history, with its first win going as far back as 1988 with the 735i.
Assembled locally at BMW's Rosslyn plant near Tshwane, the latest X3 was recognised for its balance of refinement, digital features and relative value for money. Judges also highlighted the model's design and the strength of its local manufacturing as key factors in its strong performance.
Second place went to Suzuki's fourth-generation Swift. The compact hatchback, a mainstay in the South African market for several generations, was credited for its improvements over the outgoing model — particularly in terms of standard safety features like six airbags across the range.
Rounding out the top three was the new BMW M5. The latest version of Munich's performance sedan now incorporates hybrid technology, giving it the ability to run on electric power alone in certain conditions, while retaining its twin-turbocharged V8 engine. The M5 also picked up the Jurors' Choice award, a special recognition voted on by the panel for standout vehicles.
The Tiguan led the Family category, with jurors noting its updated packaging and features that are typically reserved for more premium segments, such as massaging seats.

The Tiguan led the Family category, with jurors noting its updated packaging and features that are typically reserved for more premium segments, such as massaging seats.
BMW also took the Executive category with its new 5 Series, which was praised for its driving dynamics and cabin quality.
Toyota, meanwhile, claimed the Adventure Utility class with its latest Land Cruiser Prado. The model was credited for improving both comfort and off-road capability compared to its predecessor.
Lastly, the Mahindra XUV 3XO was voted the winner of the 2025 Motor Enthusiast 'People's Choice' award. Decided by public vote, the compact SUV stood out for its design, fuel efficiency, and list of standard features.

Cologne argued that a gentleman's agreement not to poach youth team players had been violated, but Leverkusen said Wirtz was a first-team signing and within months he had made his Bundesliga debut. His rise was interrupted by a cruciate knee ligament injury in March 2022 that forced him to miss the next 10 months. By the time he returned, Alonso had been installed as Leverkusen boss and together they would spearhead the club's greatest days. Leverkusen ended Bayern Munich's grip on the Bundesliga in stunning fashion, romping to the title and the German Cup without losing a single match in the 2023/24 season. Wirtz netted his first career hat-trick on the day the title was sealed against Werder Bremen, on his way to being crowned Bundesliga player of the year. "Flo is one of the top players in the world, he's world class," said Alonso, who compared his protege to Lionel Messi in terms of his understanding of the game. "Why is Messi so good? Because he knows how and when to play simple passes. Messi says: 'You're in a better position? Here, there you have the ball'," said Alonso, a hero of Liverpool's 2005 Champions League triumph. "It's not always about making the most brilliant move, but the best and smartest. Florian can do that. That's why he's so good." 'The full package' Both star player and coach committed to staying with the Leverkusen project for another 12 months, but defeat in the Europa League final to Atalanta to round off the 2023/24 campaign was a sign of things to come. Bayern restored their grip on the German game last season but could not convince Wirtz to follow the lead of many others in joining from their Bundesliga rivals. Instead, he made it clear his preference was a move to the Premier League champions and the chance to add his name to Liverpool's cast of legends. "A huge talent, huge future in front of him, so Liverpool is the place for him," said the club's former captain Steven Gerrard. Despite 57 goals and 65 assists in 197 games for Leverkusen, Wirtz will begin life at Anfield in the shadow of Mohamed Salah. But the Reds are banking on Wirtz's creativity to help maintain the 32-year-old's prolific goalscoring numbers and ease the burden of carrying the Liverpool attack. The club's previous record signing, £85 million recruit Darwin Nunez, has failed to deliver and could be sold to help recoup some of their major outlay on new faces. Liverpool will hope Wirtz can handle the pressure of his price tag and the physicality of the Premier League to ensure there is no second season slump under Slot. Former Germany head coach Hansi Flick is in no doubt about what the midfielder has to offer. VW Golf GTI Edition 50 sets new Nürburgring record
VW hasn't revealed exact power figures for the Edition 50 just yet, but the German carmaker has confirmed it will be the most powerful GTI ever put into production. The car will make its public debut at the Nürburgring 24-hour race on June 20 before going on sale in 2026 — exactly 50 years after the GTI nameplate was born. Buyers will be able to spec the car with an optional Performance pack, which adds a sport-tuned chassis, lightweight forged 19-inch wheels and a set of specially developed Bridgestone Potenza Race semi-slick tyres. 'My record-setting car was equipped with this package,' says Leuchter. 'That was the decisive factor, in my opinion. Three years ago, I wouldn't have believed a front-wheel-drive GTI could beat the lap time of the brilliant Golf R — but now it has. And in less-than-ideal weather, too. That says everything about the set-up and the incredible potential of this GTI.'

Self-charging hybrid Toyota Land Cruiser 300 finally arrives, but…
Approved for Australia from 2026, for the moment, the hybrid is an unknown for South Africa. Land Cruiser 300 Hybrid has been given a different frontal design from the normal petrol version. Image: Toyota Qatar First reported six years ago as heading for the then still born Land Cruiser 300, Toyota has quietly introduced the long rumoured hybrid variant in select Middle Eastern markets only with plans of expanding availability elsewhere unknown at present. Available in two trim levels in the United Arab Emirates, VX-R and GR Sport, and three in Qatar, VX, VX-R and GR Sport, the simply titled Land Cruiser HEV adopts a self-charging petrol-based setup rather than the diesel-electric combination mulled in 2019. The same configuration as upscale Lexus brand's LX 700h, the hybrid Land Cruiser combines the familiar 3.5-litre badged 3.4-litre twin-turbo V6 with an electric motor and battery for a total system output of 336kW/790Nm. Down five kilowatts but up 140 Nm on the LX, the system is once again connected to a hybrid optimised 10-speed automatic, which sends the amount of twist to all four corners via the full-time four-wheel-drive system with the perennial low range transfer case included. Besides the unique Gazoo Racing exterior changes that comes with the GR Sport, both the VX and VX-R, regardless of market, differ subtly from the regular Land Cruiser 300 by means of not only the HEV badges, but a restyled bumper, outer grille surround, a new lower air intake and different fog light bezels. Inside, and bar hybrid specific readouts with the infotainment system and instrument cluster, the HEV appears otherwise identical to the normal Land Cruiser 300, which in the Middle East derives motivation from either the non-electrified twin-turbo V6, or the stalwart normally aspirated 4.0-litre V6. Unsurprisingly absent is the 3.3-litre turbodiesel V6. Not yet approved Reportedly approved for Australia from the first quarter of next, according to pricing in the UAE ranges from 389 900 (R1 910 379) to 409 900 dirham (R2 008 372), and from 385 000 (R1 898 235) to 405 000 riyal (R1 996 845) in Qatar. As stands, no word about the Land Cruiser 300 Hybrid coming to South Africa has been made, although if approved, expect it to arrive possibly after the start of sales Down Under. Presently, the five model Land Cruiser 300 range starts at R1 512 100 for the 3.3d GX-R and ends at R2 130 000 for the twin-turbo petrol V6 GR Sport.
