BANGI, July 31 (Bernama) -- The second International Nuclear Science Olympiad (INSO) 2025, which kicked off yesterday at PERMATA@Pintar, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), demonstrates Malaysia's commitment to advancing nuclear education and nurturing young talent.
The eight-day event, hosted by UKM in collaboration with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), brings together students from various countries to compete and collaborate in the field of nuclear science.
UKM Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Academic and International Affairs Prof Dr Abdul Halim Abdul Gafor said INSO 2025 was not merely a competition but also a platform for unity, where diverse minds converge to address humanity's greatest challenges.
'As a leading research university, UKM takes pride in its contributions to nuclear science through cutting-edge research under its nuclear science programme, as well as strategic partnerships with the IAEA, the European Council for Nuclear Research (CERN), and ASEAN networks,' he said in his speech at the opening ceremony of INSO 2025 here today.
Also present were Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Mohammad Yusof Apdal and UKM Acting Deputy Vice Chancellor (Industry and Community Partnerships) Prof Dr Faizal Mohamed.
The event brought together around 80 delegates, including 55 students from 14 countries – among them Japan, the Philippines, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Singapore – to celebrate scientific excellence and foster cross-cultural collaboration.
This year's theme, 'Fueling Ambition, Celebrating Excellence', underscores Malaysia's commitment to nurturing global scientific talent and promoting the peaceful use of nuclear technology.
Meanwhile, Mohammad Yusof said nuclear science in Malaysia had played a vital role in supporting national development goals.
'These include medical imaging and cancer treatment through nuclear medicine, as well as ensuring food safety through irradiation technology.

Partial solar eclipse to give Malaysia a 'bitten' sun
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia will experience a partial solar eclipse on Aug 2, 2027, the same day a rare total solar eclipse, the longest in 100 years, occurs elsewhere. The total eclipse will be most visible in the Middle East, Africa, and Europe, but Malaysians will only be able to see a partial obscuration of the sun. Dr B. Kuhan Chandru, a research fellow at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia's (UKM) Space Science Centre, said areas like Kuala Lumpur are expected to see up to 42 per cent of the sun's disk covered. "The sun will appear as if it has been 'bitten' on the side before it disappears below the horizon," he said. The phenomenon is expected to begin around 6.52pm, reach its peak at 7.23pm, and end at 7.27pm, depending on the location and the horizon in each area, he added. He said countries along the path of the total eclipse, such as Spain, Saudi Arabia, and Egypt, are expected to experience complete darkness for up to six minutes. Chandru said the event will still be a rare moment despite the lack of total darkness in Malaysia. He said the phenomenon presents an opportunity to study how life responds to sudden and extreme environmental changes. "Animals like birds and insects often change their behaviour during an eclipse, while plants and microorganisms slow down photosynthesis as if preparing for a sudden night," he said.

Malaysia powers up nuclear push
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is moving closer to adopting nuclear energy as part of its long-term energy transition strategy. Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti) Minister Chang Lih Kang (pic) said a pre-feasibility study on nuclear power has been completed. He said the initial findings showed that nuclear energy had strong potential to serve as a stable, clean and reliable power source for the country. 'In line with this, six technical task forces have been proposed to support nuclear energy readiness. 'Three of these are under Mosti, focusing on technology and industry development, development of nuclear competencies and a legal and regulatory framework,' Chang told the Dewan Rakyat yesterday. The remaining three teams will fall under the purview of the Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry, he said. Chang said the country now has 323 nuclear researchers under the Malaysian Nuclear Agency and 36 science officers under the Atomic Energy Department, holding qualifications in nuclear science and engineering. He said Malaysia was working to amend its Atomic Energy Act to enable the ratification of key international treaties and conventions under the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). 'Once approved by the Cabinet, we aim to table the amended Act in this Parliament session. 'This will demonstrate Malaysia's seriousness in exploring nuclear energy as one of our power generation options,' he said. Chang also confirmed that Malaysia signed a strategic civil nuclear cooperation agreement with the United States on July 10, complementing its existing collaborations with China and Russia. 'The agreement will act as a catalyst for long-term cooperation in infrastructure development, joint research, technical training and local industry strengthening,' he added. He said Malaysia was also working closely with the IAEA through technical cooperation programmes, regional partnerships, the Asian Nuclear Cooperation Forum and coordinated research projects. Beyond power generation, he said, nuclear technology is also being used in climate and environmental research.
