Family of 10 'barge out' of pub in brazen dine and dash after £320 meal
The landlady of a well-known Welsh pub has accused a family of ten of "barging their way" out without settling their £320 bill.
Kelly Jollife, who manages the Greyhound Inn in Usk, recounted that the family visited the pub on Sunday, July 27. She alleges they each ordered a starter and a main course, consumed them fully, but then refused to pay for anything other than their drinks.
Kelly claimed they then "barged past" the pub's chefs before departing in two cars. The 49 year old, who has been the landlady at the pub for eight years, expressed her shock at the "brazen" act of "selfishness".
Police have confirmed they are investigating an allegation of theft. Kelly said: "They looked at me as they were walking out as if to say, 'you can't do anything anyway so, tough'.
"When they first came in they were not particularly nice to begin with. I had explained to them it was table service but they kept insisting on coming up to the bar. That kind of thing. They were gonna do it their way. So they ordered starters, mains and ate all the starters, then half way through their mains the waiter went to check if everything was ok, and they said, 'no it is all s**t. Everything is s**t. It is all just shocking'.
"Then the waiter said 'do you want me to get the manager' to which they said, 'yes, but after we have finished'. They proceeded to eat everything. We had 150 people in house, and 140 of them left happy. Everybody, was happy.
"I was then called and I said 'they are going to have to come and speak with me. I want full payment - they have eaten everything'. The waiter told them this and they replied with 'no - we are not paying. We will pay for the drinks but we are not paying for the food'. This was obviously unacceptable.
"All of a sudden they started walking out. I went straight to the table with the card machine to say 'you need to pay this bill' - it was £328 worth. They put £44 on the table in cash, and walked out. I followed them down the path with some of my chefs as they are bigger than me, and one of the older guys in the family started fronting up the chefs.
"The chefs just said 'look, you are an embarrassment, just pay the bill'. There was not a fist fight or anything, it was mainly verbal. As I was shouting 'you need to pay your bill' they got in the car and left the property."
Kelly revealed she has contacted Gwent Police about the alleged incident, and said there had been a tremendous reaction on social media after she shared details of what happened, reports Wales Online.
She explained the post was designed to "embarrassing" those supposedly involved, stating: "It is not the way to behave." She continued: "But the response I had on Facebook was just phenomenal. Everybody is so supportive."
A spokesperson for Gwent Police stated: "We're investigating an allegation of theft in Usk Road, Llantrisant, which occurred around 3pm on Sunday 27 July. Officers are speaking to several people to establish the circumstances and enquiries continue."

A Welsh council's crackdown on illegal tobacco being sold in city shops
A Welsh council's crackdown on illegal tobacco being sold in city shops In the last two years, 25 shops have been closed Illegal tobacco and vape products have been seized across the city (Image: PA) Over two years, 25 shops have been ordered to close as part of a police and council initiative to stop illegal tobacco being sold in Newport. Operation Firecrest was a joint Newport council and South Wales Police scheme which started in October 2023. It has seen hundreds of thousands of illegal cigarettes seized as well as hand-rolled tobacco and vapes. As part of the crackdown, 25 properties were forced to stop trading via legal closure orders, the council say. While the closure orders are only temporary, the council say they have been working with landlords to ensure that any tenants are operating legally. The city was recently dubbed the UK's worst for empty shops, something people hit back at. Over the course of the two year operation, the council say the following were seized: 481,790 illegal cigarettes illegal hand-rolled tobacco (equivalent to 199,050 cigarettes) 26,856 illegal disposable vaping devices seized 25 properties were forced to cease trading by legal closure orders Newport council say that in one shopping area, five premises were previously selling illegal tobacco and vapes and all were taken to court and magistrates issued closure orders. Two have changed use, one is vacant and another was closed recently. A fifth has reopened but appears to be now trading lawfully, the council say. In 2023, the council say an operation on Commercial Street saw a "significant amount of products" taken off sale. Five shops were subject to closer orders and three people were charged with fraudulent trading to which they later pleaded guilty. Councillor Mark Spencer said: "The illegal trade of tobacco and vapes is harmful to our residents and those communities where it is taking place. We will not tolerate it in our neighbourhoods or our city. "Closure orders can only be for a limited period which is why the officers have been working with landlords. We are grateful to those who have taken their advice in relation to the type of tenants they have and urge others to be vigilant. 'We would welcome changes in the legislation which would strengthen the action that can be taken against those involved in the illegal trade and the premises they operate from." Article continues below The law has recently changed, and it is now illegal for businesses in Wales to sell or supply any single-use or disposable vapes. All vaping devices must now be both rechargeable and refillable to be legally sold or distributed.

Police called to illegal rave at Welsh beauty spot
Police were called to deal with an illegal rave in a Welsh beauty spot over the weekend. Dyfed-Powys Police said they were called to a large gathering at Brynrhudd Forestry in Ceredigion in the early hours of Sunday, August 3. The event sparked concerns about safety, environmental impact and local wildlife, with the public being urged to steer clear of the area. The police stated that officers were dispatched to the scene shortly after learning of the mass gathering. Given the size of the crowd and the safety considerations involved in dispersing it, the police decided to focus on preventing any further arrivals under a Section 63 notice, they said. The force noted that "a number" of individuals and vehicles remained in the area throughout the day, under close police surveillance, but by late Sunday afternoon, most had departed. Sign up for the North Wales Live newsletter sent twice daily to your inbox A few people and vehicles were still present last night, but officers were maintaining close contact with them, reports Wales Online. Chief Inspector Steve Thomas of Dyfed-Powys Police last night said: "We know this type of unlicensed event can cause considerable disruption and concern for safety, as well as harming the environment and disturbing wildlife, which is why we act swiftly with our partners to stop further entry and shut them down. "There is little doubt that these types of events are very well planned, organised and that local knowledge is important in drawing down the main group to a particular area of land. "We assure local communities that appropriate action was taken to deal with this event, and we will robustly investigate any criminal offences that come to light." A spokesperson for Natural Resources Wales added: "We're supporting Dyfed Powys Police in the ongoing response to an unlicensed music event taking place on land we manage at Cefn Croes wind farm, Myherin forest, near Devil's Bridge, Ceredigion. "Our forests and countryside are for everyone to enjoy, but illegal events like this can harm the environment, disturb wildlife, and create unsafe conditions for others.

Police told TMZ that "officers spotted a firearm in" the vehicle that Soulja Boy had been a passenger in. It is not clear why the vehicle was initially pulled over. The rapper was booked on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm shortly after 6am. It's not yet known whether he has since been released. Soulja Boy is yet to publicly comment on the incident. On Saturday night, Soluja Boy had posted videos on Instagram from his birthday party at LA nightclub Poppy. The artist is best known for his 2007 hit Crank That, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks and scored him a nomination for best rap song at the Grammys. He was previously arrested and charged with a felony offence for carrying a loaded gun during a 2014 traffic stop in LA. And in April this year, he was ordered to pay more than $4m in damages to his former assistant who accused him of sexual battery and abuse. The unnamed woman sued the star, claiming he regularly raped her and beat her - and sometimes kept her prisoner - when she worked for him. Soulja Boy had denied abusing her and insisted their relationship was consensual - but a jury in a civil trial found him liable for sexual battery, assault and gender violence. More to follow...
