'I wouldn't say I would watch him back or just watch his highlights. I'd still watch him when he plays for England.' Melia's fanbase extended to include Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson after he shone in last year's playoff against Istanbul Başakşehir.
He must help his first senior club overcome another Super Lig Turkish outfit to grace that level again in his final season before venturing abroad. His chilled demeanour amid the hype has been noticed inside and outside his footballing habitat.

'I'm concentrating on Pat's at the moment,' he explained. 'Hopefully this game will be a big one. I had a little taste of last year playing a Turkish team, Istanbul. League of Ireland games on a Friday prepare me for what's going to be in front of me next year. I'm just excited for all of it.
'I think my teammate Chris Forrester asked me how are you so relaxed? I just take everything in my stride.
'It's what I'm here to do, play football at the end of the day. I don't think I'm giving him advice, he gives me advice on the pitch but he just has me laughing at me really 'I have good people behind me, staff in football and family.'

Lowry falls out of Ryder Cup places after FedEx horror show

The Offaly native has slumped ten places on the OWGR ladder after finishing tied for second at the Truist Championship in May. Lowry currently sits 18th in the rankings. However, there's a silver lining for the Irishman as he's already into this week's BMW Championship at Caves Valley. The field is down to just the top 50 in the FedEx Cup standings ahead of the season's final that will see only the top 30 progress to the Tour Championship at East Lake. The final event for Ryder Cup points will be the Betfred British Masters, which finishes on August 24. Meanwhile, JJ Spaun's runner-up finish in Memphis means that he has now mathematically qualified for the US Ryder Cup team. Spaun joins Scottie Scheffler and Xander Schauffele on Keegan Bradley's team ahead of the event in New York at the end of September.

Gianluigi Donnarumma wants to leave PSG with Manchester United ready to make move for Italian keeper
The Italian goalkeeper has been left out of PSG's squad for Wednesday's UEFA Super Cup match against Tottenham, and it is understood he will now leave Paris this summer if the right move opens up. Manchester United have been linked in some reports with an interest in the 26-year-old, who is out of contract next summer. However, it is understood that up to this point there has been no contact from United to PSG regarding Donnarumma. The European champions completed the signing of Lucas Chevalier from Lille over the weekend, and Donnarumma has now been left out for the game against Spurs in Udine. Donnarumma was part of the Italy squad which won Euro 2020 by beating England in the final on penalties, and is still regarded as one of the world's top goalkeepers. He made over 200 appearances for AC Milan before joining PSG in 2021. He has won four Ligue 1 titles with the Parisiens and was part of the team which thrashed Inter Milan 5-0 to win last season's Champions League title.

Irish sailing trio make good starts at Europeans
Updated / Monday, 11 Aug 2025 19:06 The McMahon siblings, Eve and Ewan, both made strong starts to their ILCA European Championships prospects in Sweden on Monday, though it wasn't plain sailing for either at the start of the six-day regatta. Eve was one of nine boats penalised for early starting in the tricky current and strong winds and received maximum points for the disqualification. However, the Howth sailor bounced back in race two by leading her division most of the way before the wind died and she took second place for that race. Older brother Ewan had a better day and is third European out of 153 boats thanks to a second and a sixth. Carlow's Finn Lynch also opened well with a third and an 11th and needs to maintain this form to secure a strong overall Gold fleet place ahead of the final series that starts on Thursday. All three Irish sailors are now counted in the top 10 in the world as they begin to focus on the 2028 LA Games. The Irish sailing squad has just returned from a three-week training camp at the Los Angeles Olympic venue.
