Bihar voter list revision: Lalu Prasad, Tejashwi say conspiracy to snatch rights
Taking to social media platform X, Lalu Prasad wrote, 'Two Gujaratis are trying to snatch the right to vote of 8 crore Biharis. These two Gujaratis hate Bihar, the Constitution, and democracy. Wake up and raise your voice! Save democracy and the Constitution.'
The voter list revision exercise ahead of the Bihar Assembly elections has triggered a major political storm, with the opposition accusing the Centre, the Bihar government, and the Election Commission of hatching a conspiracy to delete the names of crores of voters to manipulate the elections.
Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav also took to X, calling the exercise a 'deep conspiracy' to disenfranchise voters in Bihar.
'A deep conspiracy of the vote ban in Bihar. The game of cutting the votes of Dalits, OBCs, and minorities and adding fake votes has started. This is the deepest conspiracy to implement the vote bandi in Bihar,' Tejashwi wrote.
He further alleged that 'Modi-Nitish are working through the Election Commission, determined to crush the Constitution and democracy and snatch your right to vote. These people are now upset after seeing their direct defeat. When the vote of the voter is abolished, then what is the use of democracy and the Constitution?'
The issue has now reached the Supreme Court, with several petitions filed against the voter list revision, calling it unconstitutional and anti-people, and demanding immediate intervention to prevent the alleged removal of lakhs of names from the voter list.
On Monday, senior advocate Kapil Sibal mentioned the matter before the Supreme Court, seeking an urgent hearing.
The apex court has agreed to hear the case on Thursday, July 10.

SC panel summons govt officials over ‘ESZ violation' in Satkosia reserve
1 2 Bhubaneswar: Supreme Court's Central Empowered Committee (CEC) has summoned the state chief secretary, Manoj Ahuja, tourism secretary, Balwant Singh, principal chief conservator of forests (PCCF) and head of forest force, Suresh Pant, and PCCF (wildlife), Prem Kumar Jha, to attend in person before it on July 17. They are required to explain the alleged violation of eco-sensitive zone (ESZ) in Satkosia Tiger Reserve as per the tourism department's master plan. The CEC has also mentioned in its July 3 letter to the chief secretary that they will have to explain the plan on constructing a two-lane national highway over Chilika Lake and a bridge over the Mahanadi river near Baliput in the eco-sensitive Satkosia. Based on the CEC letter, forest department communicated to the departments concerned on Sunday to appear before the SC panel as revealed by the govt letter dated July 5. The CEC letter to the chief secretary stated, "With reference to proceedings of the meeting on the master plan on tourism, land bank and HR issues held on May 30, relating to tourism projects, forest clearances and eco-sensitive zones and the requirement of approval of the tourism department in the finalisation of ESZ, you are requested to attend the meeting on July 17 in the CEC office, New Delhi." Earlier, CEC had sought a response from the chief secretary regarding alleged eco-sensitive zone violations, referring to the draft proposal of Satkosia's wildlife wing. Satkosia Abhayaranya and Praja Surkshya Samiti (SAPSS), which filed the petition in the apex court, stated that Satkosia is a Ramsar convention site and the forest department is attempting to modify the 2011 ESZ norm to allow tourism department to undertake massive projects in the core area. Towards the Baliput area, the ESZ has been reduced to zero to pave way for construction activities. "This will facilitate the mushrooming of hotels on the edge of Satkosia gorge, thus encouraging commercial hotels to make their interest prevail over conservation. This will also completely disturb the nesting of birds and the basking of crocodiles on sandbars in both Baliput and Badmul ends," wildlife conservationist Prasanna Behera said. "Outside the boundary of Satkosia, at least 1km of ESZ should be maintained where no construction and tourism activities can take place. If the ESZ is made zero, the biodiversity of Satkosia gorge, which is home to endangered gharials, will perish fast," he added.

Abu Salem to stay in jail till 2030, Bombay High Court rules out early release
The Bombay High Court on Monday observed that gangster Abu Salem's sentence in prison will get over only in 2030 and not on March 31, 2025 as he was bench of Justices AS Gadkari and Rajesh S Patil admitted his plea, which will be heard later and noted that the Supreme Court in its order had said that he could be sentenced only to 25 years, which would get over in the year 2030. The bench said, "We reckon that your date of arrest is October 2005. According to it, 25 years are yet to be completed."advertisementSalem, extradited from Portugal in 2005, was sentenced to life imprisonment for his role in the 1993 serial blasts by a special court under TADA and for the murder of builder Pradeep Jain. Salem had filed an appeal against that order and pointed out that when he was extradited, the Indian government had assured Portugal that he would not be sentenced for more than 25 years. It was in this context that the Supreme Court observed that he could be sentenced to 2030 lawyers, Rishi Malhotra and Farhana Shah, contended that Salem had earned three years and 16 days of remission for good conduct, along with a one-month credit granted by the Supreme Court for time spent in custody in Portugal. They claimed that these factors pushed his total sentence duration beyond 25 years, making him eligible for the Central Bureau of Investigation strongly opposed this argument. Additional Solicitor General Anil Singh, appearing for the CBI, submitted that Salem was mixing up the calculations to meet the 25-year threshold. Singh also said that Salem should approach the Supreme Court for clarification if he believes its earlier order was not being followed Malhotra insisted that the 2030 timeline failed to account for the remission period, the bench responded sharply, saying, 'Are you saying that the Supreme Court order is wrong? Even applying simple logic, 25 years is yet to be completed.'The court admitted Salem's plea and agreed to an expedited hearing, but no date has been set.- EndsMust Watch
