Egypt's Pyramids to undergo $51M revamp

Egypt is giving one the world's most iconic landmarks a major upgrade in hopes of improving the visitor experience. The Pyramids of Giza draw over 14 million tourists each year, but travelers often leave underwhelmed by their experience at the historic UNESCO World Heritage site.
Now, a $51 million (£38 million) project led by Orascom Pyramids Entertainment Services Company is aiming to change that. As part of the initiative, 45 electric buses have been introduced to shuttle visitors around the site every five minutes. A modern online ticketing system, an upgraded visitor centre and the restoration of ancient tombs are also in the works, as reported by the Express.
In a statement shared to X, Naguib Sawiris, the founder of Orascom Telecom Holding and Orascom Investment Holding, highlighted the 'offensive' behaviour of around 2,000 camel and horse riders. Sawiris wrote: 'The disruption of the continuous tourist bus route, the horse and camel manure and their foul-smelling waste that offends and pollutes the most important archaeological site in the world make the visit a very bad experience.'
He also emphasised that vendors who fail to move to a newly designated zone will be banned, adding: 'The solution is that they must go to the exercise area as planned by the state and stay away from the asphalt bus route to avoid obstructing tourists.
In addition, a recent investigation by animal rights group PETA has exposed serious abuse of camels and horses used for tourist rides at the site. PETA claims the animals are beaten, starved, and sometimes left to die in the street. Jason Baker, Vice President of PETA Asia, said: 'PETA has documented the routine punching, kicking, whipping, and starving of horses and camels at the pyramids.
'Animals are literally ridden to death and then dumped like rubbish outside the gate. The Pyramids of Giza should symbolise Egypt's beauty and history - not unchecked animal abuse.' It comes after an animal-loving Dutch vigilante who attacked a man she saw beating a donkey in Egypt is now facing a lawsuit. Astonishing footage shows expat Joke Van der Post punching the animal's handler before chasing him with a whip as he tries to flee.
As the man tries to run away Ms Van der Post, who manages a veterinary practice called the Good Karma Sanctuary, grabs a whip from another donkey handler and chases him off into the distance. The man filed a police complaint accusing Ms Van der Post of assault and claiming appearing in the viral video has caused him 'psychological harm', local media reports.

An ex-staff member at an Ibiza fast food restaurant has claimed British tourists are conned out of money using an easy and widespread scam. The woman, who asked to remain anonymous, said she was ordered to charge tourists more than locals when she worked at the fast food franchise in Ibiza's party resort San Antonio. The female has reportedly lodged a formal complaint alleging malpractice by the Spanish eaterie, which has not yet been named. The Daily Mail reports the restaurant is on the resort's Doctor Fleming Avenue. and the claims come just days after a UK tourist was left fighting for his life after being knocked down in San Antonio. The former employee claims that senior staff members mistreated or threatened employees who refused to follow bosses' orders to charge travellers more or upgrade their meals to larger sizes, reports the Express. Speaking to Ibiza newspaper Periodico de Ibiza, she said: "Workers were instructed to charge for more expensive products. "For example, if a customer, generally British tourists staying in the area, asked for a hamburger with cheese, employees were told to serve them an XL hamburger with cheese and add several extras, like extra hamburgers, extra cheese, XL chips or other products they hadn't asked for. "We had to do it without them realising." She went on to say: "I didn't want to form part of that. I didn't want customers getting annoyed with me over that." The former employee at the fast food eatery said she was sacked halfway through her shift for refusing to overcharge customers. She said: 'They made me sign papers that said I hadn't passed my trial period. She also alleged the franchise owner had refused to accept a work uniform when she went to return it, saying one of them had grease stains on it. Defending her decision to speak out and alleging staff were mistreated in other ways, like being made to mop the floor with their bare hands by abusive bosses, she said: 'The most important thing for me is to make the situation public, for former colleagues who have to carry on enduring this inhumane treatment.' The resort on Ibiza's west coast has long been a favourite with British tourists. However, San Antonio has come under the spotlight this summer following a number of tourist deaths in hotel plunges. Dundee-born ice hockey star Gary Kelly, 19, became the fourth holidaymaker to die at four-star Ibiza Rocks Hotel since April 27 when he fell from a third-floor balcony on July 21 in an incident which the Civil Guard has described as an accident. On July 7 Ewan Thomson, 26, from Aberdeen, fell to his death at the same hotel, with his sister Teila claiming afterwards: 'Once it did happen, the hotel's response was just completely heartbreaking; almost as if it never happened.' A 19-year-old Italian tourist of Turkish origin plunged to her death on April 27 from a fourth-floor at the hotel, owned by the Ibiza Rocks Group which is led by the British founders of island super club Manumission. In the early hours of yesterday morning a British holidaymaker was left fighting for his life after being run over in Doctor Fleming Avenue. Ibiza and its neighbouring island, Majorca, have been the centre of anti-mass tourism protests over the past couple of summers.

Vigilante cyclist who pushed his bike into a car he was trying to stop at ‘no entry' sign makes bizarre excuse

Due to roadworks, the road appears to be reduced to a one way street, with traffic cones and signs telling drivers not to enter it. Despite being confronted by the vigilante, the driver keeps trying to sneak down Paddenswick Road in Hammersmith, west London. It is at this point the brazen vigilante cyclist tries to block the driver's path by throwing his bike in his path. The motorist ignores the flimsy roadblock and accelerates along the road anyway, smashing into the bicycle in the process. Responding to critics of his extreme actions today, Cycling Mikey gave a bizarre excuse for not stopping his bike. Writing on X, he claimed that he 'couldn't… brake a 28kg e-bike once I realised the driver wasn't stopping'. Footage of the confrontation between the road safety warrior and the driver was filmed by Mikey and a bystander. The Dutch vigilante is then left to pick up his possessions from the tarmac after unsuccessfully stopping the motorist. Prior to the smash, Mikey can be heard in the clip saying: "What is that sign back there? You have to go back now, very naughty.' Shouting at another driver who attempts to drive through the one-way street, he says: "No f*** off, go back. "What do you think you're doing? Go back." 'No arrests have been made at this stage. 'We urge victims of crime to contact the police by calling 101, or 999 in an emergency.' Cycling Mikey has made a name for himself by filming motorists breaking the rules of the road and reporting them. On his social media, he claims to have reported more than 2,000 drivers in the space of six years. Since 2019, he says motorists have paid a total of £165,700 in fines and received 2,649 penalty points due to his actions. He also claims 35 people have been disqualified from driving. Last year, footage showed him cruising along the road before he caught a woman red-handed using her phone behind the wheel. She can be seen winding the window down as Mikey explains what she's done wrong. The woman then says how she's a doctor and explains it's a very "difficult job". Mikey then appears to consider letting the woman off the hook before he asks her if she already has points. But then when she admits she does he replies: "I'm starting to think you're someone not learning from the points system." In 2020, he videoed Guy Ritchie texting while behind the wheel of his Range Rover The exchange led to the film director being banned from driving for six months, as he already had nine speeding points. He also caught Chris Eubank on the phone in 2021, with the former world champion boxer telling him: 'Go away. Off you go, off you go.' Eubank was handed three penalty points and fined £280 in costs because he jumped a red light having driven away from van Erp. Children watch in horror as their father kills himself on live TV
WARNING: DISTRESSING CONTENT JoDon Romero, 33, committed suicide on live television after a police pursuit in the US state of Arizona - his partner and children were watching at home A mother and her children were subjected to the traumatic experience of witnessing her partner and their father take his own life on live television. JoDon Romero, 33, was embroiled in a lengthy police pursuit in September 2013, in Arizona in the US, which Fox News broadcast live as it happened. As law enforcement closed in, Romero tragically chose to end his life. Back in 2022, another father from Bolton in Greater Manchester, Paul David Hilton, also ended his life by suicide and live-streamed it on Facebook. Angela Rodriguez, JoDon Romero's partner and mother to their children, aged nine, 13, and 15, was watching at home with the youngsters when the distressing scene aired. She subsequently filed a lawsuit claiming that the children endured severe emotional and psychological trauma from witnessing their father's shocking death. The BBC reported the mother of three alleged infliction of emotional distress, reports the Express. Fox News had been tracking the chase with a live helicopter feed and inadvertently showed the suicide on air. After returning from a commercial break, the news anchor issued an apology, saying: "We really messed up, and we're all very sorry." A Fox News executive later expressed regret for the incident, attributing it to "severe human error" after broadcasting the slightly delayed live footage of the suicide. The network has since apologised for the "severe human error" that resulted in broadcasting the fatal incident. On September 28, 2013, Romero died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head following an hour-long car chase, which began with him carjacking a vehicle at gunpoint, while a news helicopter captured the event from above. Police stated that he had an extensive criminal record and was sought for parole violations. Rodriquez's lawsuit against Fox News Channel and its parent company News Corp claims on the day in question, Romero's children heard schoolyard whispers about a live televised suicide. They returned home and sought out the footage on YouTube, only to discover it was their father they were watching. Rodriguez says her children "have been, and continue to be, severely traumatised" by the video and have exhibited signs of post-traumatic stress disorder, such as flashbacks and disrupted sleep. Phoenix police reported the man who seemingly shot himself on live TV was being pursued by officers following a carjacking of a 2008 Dodge Caliber. Officers recounted that the man had stolen the car at gunpoint in west Phoenix around 11:00am local time and was trailed through city streets and a state highway. The man fired shots at officers and a police helicopter during the chase, but no other injuries were reported, according to Police spokesman Sergeant Tommy Thompson. He confirmed the man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after ditching the car on a dirt road. American Fox News said: "We took every precaution to avoid any such live incident by putting the helicopter pictures on a five-second delay. "Unfortunately, this mistake was the result of a severe human error and we apologise for what viewers ultimately saw on the screen." The Samaritans are available 24/7, 365 days a year.
