Egypt's Pyramids to undergo $51M revamp

Egypt is giving one the world's most iconic landmarks a major upgrade in hopes of improving the visitor experience. The Pyramids of Giza draw over 14 million tourists each year, but travelers often leave underwhelmed by their experience at the historic UNESCO World Heritage site.
Now, a $51 million (£38 million) project led by Orascom Pyramids Entertainment Services Company is aiming to change that. As part of the initiative, 45 electric buses have been introduced to shuttle visitors around the site every five minutes. A modern online ticketing system, an upgraded visitor centre and the restoration of ancient tombs are also in the works, as reported by the Express.
In a statement shared to X, Naguib Sawiris, the founder of Orascom Telecom Holding and Orascom Investment Holding, highlighted the 'offensive' behaviour of around 2,000 camel and horse riders. Sawiris wrote: 'The disruption of the continuous tourist bus route, the horse and camel manure and their foul-smelling waste that offends and pollutes the most important archaeological site in the world make the visit a very bad experience.'
He also emphasised that vendors who fail to move to a newly designated zone will be banned, adding: 'The solution is that they must go to the exercise area as planned by the state and stay away from the asphalt bus route to avoid obstructing tourists.
In addition, a recent investigation by animal rights group PETA has exposed serious abuse of camels and horses used for tourist rides at the site. PETA claims the animals are beaten, starved, and sometimes left to die in the street. Jason Baker, Vice President of PETA Asia, said: 'PETA has documented the routine punching, kicking, whipping, and starving of horses and camels at the pyramids.
'Animals are literally ridden to death and then dumped like rubbish outside the gate. The Pyramids of Giza should symbolise Egypt's beauty and history - not unchecked animal abuse.' It comes after an animal-loving Dutch vigilante who attacked a man she saw beating a donkey in Egypt is now facing a lawsuit. Astonishing footage shows expat Joke Van der Post punching the animal's handler before chasing him with a whip as he tries to flee.
As the man tries to run away Ms Van der Post, who manages a veterinary practice called the Good Karma Sanctuary, grabs a whip from another donkey handler and chases him off into the distance. The man filed a police complaint accusing Ms Van der Post of assault and claiming appearing in the viral video has caused him 'psychological harm', local media reports.

Madeleine McCann police 'found something they were looking for' says detective
A detective who was brought in to help find Madeleine McCann, has said he is "convinced" that German police have found important evidence Daniel Krugel, a South African private investigator who aided the McCann family in the search for their daughter Madeleine in 2007, has expressed confidence that German authorities have unearthed "important key evidence". Police and firefighters recently wrapped up three days of searching scrubland and abandoned buildings in Portugal, as part of a £300,000 operation into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in 2007. Officers were seen holding pitchforks as they scoured land on the outskirts of the Algarve town of Lagos on Thursday, June 5. Chainsaws, diggers and a ground-penetrating radar were also utilised. Speaking to The Olive Press, Daniel shared his optimism: "I'm so happy they've finally been searching in the right place and looking at their body language. "I'm quite convinced they found something they were looking for. They only looked in three specific areas with 30 people brought in from Germany and it seemed they stopped suddenly early." Even though neither Portuguese nor German police have made an official announcement, there have been reports by local media of the discovery of clothing and animal bones during the recent search efforts. The meticulous search focused on several ruins situated near the Ocean Club resort in Praia da Luz, famously known as the last place Madeleine was seen before her disappearance on May 3, 2007. A source revealed to the publication that no statements would be released for some time as numerous bags of material have been sent to Germany for detailed examination, reports the Express. Gerry McCann employed Mr Krugel in June 2007, whereupon he flew from South Africa and conducted tests using hairs belonging to Madeleine. Mr Krugel recounted: "Over four days and four nights, on eight separate readings, I pointed to the area where detectives have been searching close to Praia da Luz. "They are in the right area. That's what I've said since the beginning, which was in 2007, that the signal was static, wherever she was, she was not moving. "I used that as a centre point and what I explained to the police is to use a centre point and then you make the 360 turn bigger and bigger. "I'm so excited the Germans are at the right spot. I'm very at ease that things will now go to an end. This is all I was waiting for. Justice for Madeleine. That's all I want." Investigators, who came from both Germany and Portugal, congratulated and embraced each other at the conclusion of the searches in Atalaia, which saw samples of potential evidence taken. Those involved carried out a debrief before leaving the area, with a round of applause before a crate of German beer was produced from the base tent. The blustery conditions meant they struggled to dismantle some of their tents. British police officers were not involved in these searches, the Metropolitan Police confirmed. The authorities in Portugal had requested an undercover operation to probe into the British man and his German wife after the man's sister in the UK suggested they might be hiding information about Maddie's fate. Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha reported on Friday that German officials turned down the proposal to deploy an undercover officer with a false identity to befriend the woman and confirm suspicions she was driving the car that could have hit Madeleine while intoxicated. The report, which lacks concrete evidence, indicated that the British woman alerted UK police in 2018, over a decade since the three year old vanished during a family holiday in Portugal in 2007. The publication stated: "German prosecutors were asked to authorise a covert police operation with someone posing as a friend of the woman's and trying to get her to confess, but the courts refused. "It was decided to continue solely with the investigation into suspect Christian Brueckner, rejecting other possibilities." The mystery couple, described as "alcoholics" and residing near the Ocean Club where Madeleine was holidaying with her family, were reportedly involved in a heated argument the day after the young Brit vanished, according to Correio da Manha, reports the Express. A neighbour of the couple told investigators she heard the man repeatedly shouting: "Why did you bring her?". Portuguese police allegedly received a rebuff from German authorities when they suggested that the woman, who they had been tipped off about, might have accidentally hit Maddie while driving home "drunk", and then enlisted her husband's help to dispose of the child's body at sea. Correio reported that the unnamed British man has since passed away, but did not confirm whether his German wife is still alive. The paper also claimed that the British man consistently "refused to tell his sister if he had been involved in Madeleine's death" before she informed the authorities. The theory that Madeleine left her holiday flat to search for her parents, who were dining on tapas nearby, and subsequently fell victim to an accident or was hit by a panicked individual who then disposed of her body, has been proposed previously. However, these theories remain speculative as no definitive evidence has been found to support them. Portuguese police have yet to comment on the report by Correio da Manha. German police have concluded a three-day search near the former cottage of prime suspect Christian Brueckner, close to Praia da Luz where Madeleine vanished. This operation, backed by Portuguese police, was the first in over two years since a May 2023 search at the Arade Dam, a 40-minute drive from the Algarve holiday resort where Madeleine was last spotted. It is believed that nothing of significance has been discovered. Convicted paedophile Brueckner, 47, is set to be released from prison in Germany in September after completing a seven-year sentence for rape.

The new documentary on Amazon Prime Video is a must-watch for fans of the BBC's Shetland Viewers who enjoy the BBC crime drama Shetland are advised to watch a forthcoming Amazon Prime Video documentary that delves into the real-life account of a murder in the Scottish islands. The Orkney Assassin: Murder in the Isles, a new feature-length documentary, will premiere on the streaming service later this week. The documentary recounts the shocking tale of a cold-blooded murder in Scotland and follows a family determined to secure their son Michael Ross's release from prison. According to Amazon Prime Video's synopsis: "One summer evening in 1994, a masked man walked calmly into the only Indian restaurant in the remote Orkney Islands and shot a waiter dead before disappearing into the night. KC Brian McConnachie remarks: "I've been doing this for 40 years and I have never seen such a dramatic end to a trial." They would say it was unimaginable." While The Orkney Assassin is based on a real-life case and Shetland is purely fictional, BBC viewers may still find this series appealing due to its familiar themes and Scottish island setting. BBC's Shetland is a crime drama set predominantly on the eponymous archipelago, having first aired in March 2013. The series, adapted by David Kane, is based on the novels of Ann Cleeves and has previously bagged the award for Best TV Drama from BAFTA Scotland. The initial seven series starred Douglas Henshall as DI Jimmy Pérez, while Ashley Jensen took on the role of DI Ruth Calder from series 8.
