IPOH: A tragic accident on the Gerik-Jeli East-West Highway today claimed the life of an elderly man and left two others injured after their car collided with a 10-tonne lorry. The incident occurred near the Banjaran Titiwangsa Rest and Service Area (R&R).
The Perak Fire and Rescue Department received an emergency call at 1.02 pm, prompting immediate deployment of a fire engine from the Gerik Fire and Rescue Station. The team arrived at the scene, approximately 70 kilometres away, by 2.11 pm.
Sabarodzi Nor Ahmad, assistant director of operations for the Perak Fire and Rescue Department, confirmed the fatality. 'The deceased, a man in his 70s, was pinned in the front passenger side of a Proton Persona car. The driver and rear passenger sustained minor injuries,' he said in a statement.
The injured victims were transported to Gerik Hospital for treatment, while the body of the deceased was handed over to the police for further investigation. Authorities have yet to release details on the cause of the crash.

JOHOR BARU: A 24-year-old female driver was remanded for two days after a viral video showed her allegedly driving recklessly, causing an accident at Km4 of the Pasir Gudang highway yesterday. Dashcam recording of the 12.21am accident went viral after it was uploaded on Facebook. The footage showed a Proton Wira overtaking in the right lane while a Proton Persona overtook from the left and re-entered the right lane, leading to a rear-side collision. The impact caused the Wira to lose control and crash into a road divider. The 21-year-old Wira driver lodged a police report yesterday. Johor Baru (North) police chief, Assistant Commissioner Balveer Singh, confirmed the Persona driver was remanded, and her statement was recorded. "She tested negative for alcohol and drugs following breathalyser and urine screening," Balveer said in a statement today. The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless and dangerous driving. TAPAH: The driver involved in an accident that claimed the lives of three senior citizens at Km328.9 of the North-South Expressway has been remanded for three days. District police chief Superintendent Johari Yahya said the 31-year-old driver was detained yesterday. "The driver will be remanded from today until April 25 to facilitate the investigation," he said. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving, which carries a penalty of up to 10 years in jail and a fine of up to RM50,000 upon conviction. Yesterday, it was reported that three senior citizens were killed and three others injured in a collision involving two vehicles near the Tapah–Bidor stretch. The deceased were identified as Chong Ong, 77; Teh Kim Kai, 76; and Tan Ah Tak, 70. Perak Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Sabarozi Nor Ahmad said the crash involved a Toyota Vios and a Proton X50. "One man in the Toyota Vios was injured, while five men were in the Proton X50 — two were injured and three died at the scene," Sabarozi said.

IPOH: Three senior citizens were killed and three others injured in a collision involving two vehicles at Kilometre 328.9 of the southbound PLUS Highway near the Tapah–Bidor stretch today. Perak Fire and Rescue Department assistant director (operations) Sabarozi Nor Ahmad said the department received a distress call at 11.19am and deployed a team of seven firefighters to the scene. The deceased were identified as Chong Ong, 77; Teh Kim Kai, 76; and Tan Ah Tak, 70. "The crash involved a Toyota Vios and a Proton X50. One man in the Toyota Vios was injured, while five men were in the Proton X50 — two were injured and three died at the scene," he said in a statement. The injured were handed over to medical personnel, while the deceased were confirmed dead at the scene and referred to the police for further action. Tapah district police chief Superintendent Johari Yahya said initial investigations found that the Toyota Vios had rammed into the rear of the Proton X50, which was in the right lane. "The impact caused the Toyota Vios to veer off to the grassy area on the left side of the highway, while the Proton X50 spun and crashed into the left-side guardrail. "Three passengers in the Proton X50 died at the scene. Two of them were thrown from the vehicle due to the crash," he said. The driver and front passenger of the Proton X50 were injured and sent to Tapah Hospital for treatment. "The Vios driver will be brought to the Tapah magistrate's court tomorrow for a remand application," he added. Police are urging witnesses to contact Traffic Investigating Officer Inspector Mohd Faizan Ahmad @ Mohammed Razikin at 05-4011222 or 013-2087919. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for reckless or dangerous driving causing death.
