Thursday's practice session for the Houston Texans went from business as usual to worrisome quickly. As the former Philadelphia Eagles safety CJ Gardner-Johnson went down with an injury, it was suspected he was dealing with a major injury.
The veteran safety needed to be carted off the field. More often than not, that's a sign that a player's season could be in jeopardy. For some time, it seemed like that could be it for Garner-Johnson.

Initial reports suggested the star safety was staring at a missed first season in Houston. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport shared a positive update not long after the initial reports surfaced.
via @RapSheet: Good news for the #Texans: Safety C. J. Gardner-Johnson, who was carted off in practice today, did not tear his ACL, sources say. He's undergoing more tests, but initials tests have provided good news.
With the ACL intact, CJGJ avoided the worst-case scenario. More info coming.

A torn ACL would've sent Gardner-Johnson into a season-long rehab. Instead, it seems he could get back out on the field to debut with the Texans at some point.
History repeats itself for Gardner-Johnson. Back in 2023, the veteran was gearing up for his first season with the Detroit Lions, one season after playing with the Eagles. Early on during training camp, Gardner-Johnson suffered a non-contact lower-body injury, which caused fears of a possible ACL injury.
Gardner-Johnson was cleared to begin the season with the Lions. Early on, he suffered another injury, which placed him on the injured reserve. Before the Lions made it to the Playoffs, Gardner-Johnson appeared in just three games.

Last spring, Gardner-Johnson returned to the Eagles on a reported three-year deal. He would remain healthy, appearing in 16 games for the Eagles throughout the season.
During his first stint with the Eagles, Gardner-Johnson appeared in 12 games, racking up 67 tackles, eight pass deflections, and six interceptions.
In 2024, Gardner-Johnson played in 16 games, picking up 59 tackles, 12 pass deflections, and six more interceptions.
After helping the Eagles contend for another Super Bowl, Gardner-Johnson was included in a trade. He was sent to Houston with two years left on his deal.
It's unclear when Gardner-Johnson will make his way back out on the field for the Texans this season. The positive news is that the former Eagles star isn't dealing with anything overly concerning.

Vikings' Javon Hargrave and Jonathan Allen have looked the part in practices

The interior defensive line of the Vikings was an issue at times in 2024. While Harrison Phillips was a reliable piece, he needed some help. Kwesi Adofo-Mensah recognized that, and the team went out and signed two bulls who play in the trenches of the defense. Fast forward from free agency to the present, and both Jonathan Allen and Javon Hargrave are making impacts early. In a mailbag piece put together by The Star Tribune's Vikings writers, Mark Craig was asked how the new faces on the defensive line have looked in camp. His answer not only speaks to the success they are having, but also to how high the potential is for the group with their presence. Craig writes, "They've looked outstanding and long overdue to a unit that's been lacking in elite, run-and-pass-defending talent for some time. Even better is they've also looked healthy and available every day a year after both of them missed significant time with injuries. . .Look at the world-champion Eagles and their Mahomes-pounding D-line depth as the template for what the Vikings, and many others, are trying to replicate. . ." The depth along the edge rusher and defensive line positions has been something the Eagles have found success with in their two recent Super Bowl wins. The more depth you have, the easier it is to overwhelm opposing offensive lines, who cannot rotate players in and out. Brian Flores should have a good time utilizing both Hargrave and Allen this year and beyond in the Vikings defense.

Jalen Hurts finds time for reflection and renewed self-confidence

Very rarely will you hear Jalen Hurts talk this much about anything. Confidence as described by #Eagles QB Jalen Hurts.. How can you not love this guy? Sometimes, there is this urge to pick on Philadelphia Eagles fans and the local media. Maybe not all of them, but some of them can undoubtedly get that smoke. Not everyone is guilty of this, but this has to be said. Remember when Donovan McNabb played that 'air guitar' on his way to the field in his final appearance with the franchise? Remember how annoyed everyone was. That same contingent that criticized him is the same collective that criticizes Jalen Hurts for his stoicism. What more do people want? This is a guy who has crafted a 46-20 regular-season record while winning six of his nine postseason starts. This is also the guy who outplayed Patrick Mahomes on the game's biggest stage twice, winning one of those Super Bowls by a landslide. There comes a time when one comes to grips with the truth. Jalen Hurts could win three more Super Bowls. People will still complain. Sure, we realize some of these theories come from the national media as well, but fortunately, Hurts "had a purpose before anyone had an opinion". Yes... Take that, haters! Jalen Hurts opens up and shares the source of some newfound confidence Jalen Hurts was truly built for a city like Philadelphia. While others shrink under the pressure, he thrives in it. All the while, he remains humble while 'keeping the main thing the main thing'. This is a guy who was chosen by the greatest NBA player of all time, Michael Jordan, to be the NFL's ambassador of one of the world's top athletic brands. Most guys would do anything to play at one of college football's most iconic programs. Jalen Hurts has played for two of them. Kudos to this guy for remaining level-headed. We've never been part of a Super Bowl-winning roster, but we imagine it's pretty cool. On whether that has led to a confidence boost, Hurts offered the following response. Hurts may sound like someone with 40 years of life experiences to share, but he is still 27 years old. Think about that for a second. His story is still being written. His legacy is still being defined. Perhaps rather than complain, if some of you take some time to sit back and enjoy this, you may discover that you are enjoying the ride.

Retired Packers president Mark Murphy has new job in Green Bay

Retired Green Bay Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy wasn't out of work for long. And his new job won't take him out of sports or out of Green Bay. Murphy, who retired from the Packers in July, has joined UW-Green Bay as the university's inaugural Executive in Residence. 'I'm honored to be named UWGB's Executive in Residence,' Murphy said in the press release. 'I have tremendous respect for both Chancellor Alexander and Josh [Moon], and look forward to helping them keep UWGB's athletics program competitive in the rapidly changing Division I landscape. I'm also excited to go back to my roots in college athletics at a school that means so much to the local community.' Murphy will have an office on the UW-Green Bay campus, which is roughly 10 miles away from Lambeau Field. According to the school, Murphy will be tasked with "elevating the profile and strength of Phoenix Athletics' D1 programs" while working on "capital improvements, sports sponsorships, and long-term sustainable excellence modeling for Phoenix athletics." Murphy, who named president and CEO of the Packers in 2007, reached the mandatory retirement age of 70 in July. He was succeeded in the role by Ed Policy, who officially took over the job at the annual shareholder's meeting on July 25. Murphy played eight seasons of NFL football with the Washington Redskins before becoming a sports executive. He spent 12 years as the athletic director at Colgate, his alma mater, before becoming the athletic director at Northwestern, a job he held from 2003 to 2007. Murphy also spent time with the NFLPA and as a practicing attorney. While with the Packers, Murphy oversaw the transition from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers, helped build a Super Bowl winner in 2010, led efforts to build out the Titletown area around Lambeau Field, spent millions to keep Lambeau Field modernized, hired Matt LaFleur and Brian Gutekunst and worked tirelessly to get the NFL draft to Green Bay. The Packers will induct Murphy into the team's Hall of Fame on Aug. 28. From the Packers on Murphy's tenure: "During his time as President and CEO, Murphy has overseen tremendous growth for the organization and led the team through numerous milestones. Under his leadership, the Packers have continued to rank as one of the NFL's premier franchises, with highly successful operations both on and off the field. The club has made 12 playoff trips during his tenure, including a team-record eight straight (2009 to 2016), advanced to five NFC title games and earned a victory in Super Bowl XLV. Murphy has also directed the organization's master plan involving the Lambeau Field campus, with the organization investing more than $600 million in Lambeau Field, all financed without public tax money. He has prioritized enhancing the fan experience through stadium additions and renovations, while also ensuring the player and coach facilities remain at the top of the NFL. Murphy led the creation of Titletown, a vibrant, 45-acre development that opened in 2017 and has become a destination for visitors and residents alike. Titletown offers public, year-round programming, as well as residences; food, beverage, entertainment and hospitality offerings; and TitletownTech, a joint venture between the Packers and Microsoft aimed at driving economic growth and job creation through technology and digital innovation. Murphy has also worked to increase the number of outside events utilizing Lambeau Field, including concerts, college football, soccer matches and the NFL Draft in 2025."
