
Carsome, Carro among 4 firms appointed to conduct private vehicle checks
PUTRAJAYA : Four companies – Carsome Academy, Carro Technology, Wawasan Bintang, and Beriman Gold – have been appointed to run motor vehicle inspection centres for ownership transfers involving private vehicles, in a move aimed at breaking Puspakom's monopoly.
Transport minister Loke Siew Fook said the appointments were part of a broader effort to ease congestion at existing inspection centres and improve accessibility for motorists.
'These new companies are only allowed to conduct MV15 inspections for private vehicle ownership transfers, not commercial vehicle inspections or routine checks.
'The process is relatively straightforward and does not require heavy infrastructure,' he said in a press conference here today.
The appointed centres can operate nationwide, but are expected to begin in high-density areas such as the Klang Valley and major state capitals.
Unlike traditional inspection hubs, the new premises will likely operate out of commercial shoplots, especially near used car dealers, to streamline the process.
Loke said there were about 15 million active private vehicles in Malaysia, with ownership transfers taking place daily.
'Opening the market will provide alternatives and improve convenience. Currently, sellers and buyers have only one option – Puspakom,' he said.
As for motorcycles, of which there are about nine million, Loke said inspections for ownership transfers were not yet mandatory although the ministry was assessing the possibility that they might be in the future, to curb the sale of stolen bikes.
The new appointments are part of the government's shift from a single-concession model to a multi-licence system, aimed at fostering healthy competition and better services.
The four companies were selected from an initial list of seven, with the rest declining the offer.
When asked if other firms could apply, Loke said the door remained open.
'As long as they meet the guidelines and pass the road transport department's (JPJ) assessments, they're welcome to join the industry.'
The companies have been given a 12-month conditional window to prepare their premises, integrate their systems with JPJ's MySIKAP portal, and meet technical requirements.
However, Loke said some were expected to be operational in as little as three months.

TNB reviewing legal options after RM840m tax blow from IRB
KUALA LUMPUR, July 25 — Tenaga Nasional Bhd (TNB) has received a Notice of Additional Assessment for the Year of Assessment (YA) 2022 amounting to RM840.12 million, dated July 24, 2025, from the Inland Revenue Board. In a filing with Bursa Malaysia today, TNB said that in light of the Federal Court's decision relating to a similar Notice of Additional Assessment issued for YA 2018, it is currently evaluating its available legal options to address the matter. 'This evaluation takes into consideration that TNB has already submitted an application for Investment Allowance under Schedule 7B of the Income Tax Act 1967 (including those for YA 2022) to the Minister of Finance,' it added. — Bernama

Maybank gets cease and desist order against NUBE
Maybank took exception to NUBE's approach and referred a trade dispute which was later referred to the Industrial Court for adjudication. (Facebook pic) KUALA LUMPUR : A leading commercial bank has obtained a cease and desist order from the Industrial Court to restrain a union from commenting on a case of alleged sexual harassment, pending the outcome of a trade dispute between them. Court chairman Andersen Ong said it was just and necessary to grant the order to Malayan Banking Bhd after considering the actions of the National Union of Bank Employees (NUBE) and the provisions of the Industrial Relations Act (IRA) 1967. NUBE is barred from issuing statements to the press or posting them on its website and social media, as well as from organising pickets. 'Parties are to comply with the order forthwith, failing which the court may make further orders as it deems fit and appropriate in the circumstances,' Ong said in the interim award released last week. The trade dispute stemmed from allegations of sexual harassment raised by a former employee against her colleague. The incident was addressed in 2021 but resurfaced in 2024 during an unrelated formal grievance process. Although no formal complaint was lodged in respect of the earlier allegation of sexual harassment, it became the subject of escalating public campaigns and protests by NUBE. Maybank took exception to NUBE's approach and referred a trade dispute which was later referred to the Industrial Court for adjudication. Despite the referral to court, NUBE continued to publish statements and organise pickets related to the allegation of sexual harassment. In response, the bank applied for interim relief under the IRA, seeking an order that NUBE cease and desist from such conduct. Ong said although the court did not possess injunctive powers akin to a civil court, it was empowered to issue interim or ancillary orders to regulate the conduct of parties during ongoing proceedings. He said the objective of such orders was to preserve the status quo, prevent further escalation, and ensure the orderly administration of justice. Ong said the court had the statutory power to regulate processes under the IRA, which includes ensuring that the proceedings before it are not undermined by prejudicial public statements, misinformation, or acts that may affect the administration of justice. He said while trade unions are entitled to represent members and engage in collective action, these rights are not unfettered. Ong said the making of disparaging, unfounded, or defamatory remarks against the employer on social media platforms during picketing fell outside the legitimate scope of trade union activities. He said the court would be rendered 'a toothless tiger' if it could not restrain conduct that jeopardised its proceedings once a matter had been referred. Janice Anne Leo, Chong Jen Hui, and Adrienne Sena appeared for the bank while Ravi Nekoo and Arvinkumar Mohan represented NUBE.
